Another month and is time to release another edition of the Security Token Anthology which compiles some of my recent articles about crypto-securities. Last month I added articles about diverse topics such as governance, programmability and introduced the concept of multi-asset collateralized security tokens to refer to digital securities that represent a dynamic pool of underlying assets. The current version of the anthology includes 55 articles.Happy Reading!New Articles· Taking the First Step in Security Token Governance: Extending Security Token Protocols with Voting Rights(January 2019): ▻https://hackernoon.com/taking-the-first-step-in-security-token-governance-extending-security-to Some Ideas to Unlock Programmability in Security (...)

This piece provides an overview MakerDAO including how it functions and what long-term potential it may have.SourceWhat is MakerDAO?MakerDAO, also known as Maker, is a #crypto-collateralized stablecoin that uses a two-token system comprised of Dai, which targets a value of $1 per unit, and Maker (MKR), which is used to pay fees on Dai loans and grants governance input via voting on Maker’s policies, like the collateral ratio required on loans and the amount of fees charged on loans. Maker has a fixed maximum supply and when it is used to repay Dai loan fees it is burned, thereby reducing the circulating supply. To keep the price of a unit of Dai at $1, Maker employs incentive mechanisms that will be detailed later in this piece. For greater context on stablecoins as a category and the (...)

Crypto taxes are notoriously difficult to get done. This is because the data that makes up your crypto buys, sells, trades, transfers, mining income, forks, splits, air drops, wallet transactions, and other crypto activity is likely scattered across many different platforms and mediums. Crypto tax software is built to make this process significantly easier; however, it’s important to have a knowledge of what needs to be inputted into the tax software so that your numbers come out accurate. This checklist runs through everything that you need in order to easily complete your crypto taxes.1. A list of every exchange that you have ever used to buy, sell, or trade cryptocurrencyExchange data is essential in the crypto tax reporting process. Exchanges are likely the places where you (...)

Those who bought any significant amount of Bitcoin (or any other crypto) are faced with an interesting dilemma. Where to put it and how to keep it safe? Is it possible to have an unhackable crypto bank? Is it even needed?A related question is: Is it even possible to keep your crypto safe?Hacking has been a major problem in crypto currency circles since Bitcoin was introduced in 2008. Even before the recent wave of interest in cryptocurrency (which happened in 2017), there were well known hacks and problems. In 2014, for example, Mt. Gox, the largest bitcoin exchange at the time was hacked for 740,000 bitcoin, which was valued at over $460 million at the time (and which at 2017 and even 2018 prices would be over $1 billion). It’s not just exchanges that got hacked — in 2017, Nicehash, one of (...)

Des millions en cryptomonnaies inaccessibles après la mort d’un p.-d.g. AFP à Ottawa - 5 Février 2019 - Le Devoir _
    ▻https://www.ledevoir.com/economie/547153/des-millions-en-cryptomonnaies-inaccessibles-apres-la-mort-d-un-p-d-g

Money is a social tool to achieve cooperation among a group of people. Through history, the form of money has evolved from collectibles to coinage to currency issued by fiat. Money often reflects the values or politics of the communities that issue and use them. We refer to social money as money that is used within a community for social purposes, such as creating exchangeable value where none existed before or creating a market for social experiences that otherwise would be impossible or have a high social cost. This is in contrast to other forms of money such as fiat currency used to pay taxes and for everyday commerce in a country or decentralized money like Bitcoin used as censorship resistant store of value. The digital culture fueled by the rise of communities that live on the (...)

DAI — a decentralized opposition to the ‘banking cartel’ of stablecoins accumulates 1.7 million ETH in reservesNot without an ample dose of skepticism, 2018 can indeed be referred to as the year of the stablecoin. Amid total backlash against Tether, and yet high demand for stable cryptocurrency as a means of settlement, a growing cohort of stable coin solutions were rolled out to the market. These appear to be the stablecoins that enjoy most credibility among crypto exchanges today: Paxos Standard PAX, Gemini GUSD, Circle USDC, Carbon CUSD, TrustToken’s TUSD. Yet, it’s safe to say that none of the above products is truly decentralized, essentially being more of a token with the right to claim a fiat USD equivalent stored in a centralized storage (most often on a bank account). What it means is (...)

Why another bubble is likely and what the blockchain space should focus on nowIn the aftermath of the 2001 internet bubble, Carlota Perez published her influential book Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital. This seminal work provides a framework for how new technologies create both opportunity and turmoil in society. I originally learned about Perez’s work through venture capitalist Fred Wilson, who credits it as a key intellectual underpinning of his investment theses. In the wake of the 2018 ICO bubble and with the purported potential of blockchain, many people have drawn parallels to the 2001 bubble. I recently reread Perez’s work to think through if there are any lessons for the world of blockchain, and to understand the parallels and differences between then and now. As (...)

Querying the Blockchain: Why The Graph Might Become One of the Important Protocols of the Web3 StackData access has played a prominent role in any technology trend in the history of software. Data access technologies such as databases, search engines or query APIs are so ubiquitous that we barely think about them when architecting software solutions. As Web 3.0, decentralized applications powered by blockchain technologies evolve, infrastructure blocks such as data access will become more relevant. However, solving data access in the blockchain have proven to be a very challenging endeavor that forces developers to spend significant amounts of time writing infrastructure code. Among, the Web3 data access solutions in the market, The Graph Protocol is that one that I particularly like (...)

A state of the art of decentralized web — Part 11. IntroductionI am a full-stack web developer with a good expertise in JavaScript and serverless architectures on AWS (take a look to my other articles if you are interested in this topic). I have the feeling that #decentralization might be the next big thing in web development. By the way, one very popular ÐApp library is called web3.js, as being the successor of what we currently know as Web 2.0. In a way, decentralization could enable a true web without servers where every client would contribute to the web (like a #peer-to-peer network).Decentralized is the new ServerlessIn this series, I will try to demystify this whole new ecosystem. Most #cryptocurrency pioneers would not call what they’re building “institutions.” The term reeks of centralization — it’s too unsexy. (Except when it’s “institutional capital”, then it’s welcomed with open arms.)In a recent debate between Paul Krugman and Katie Haun on cryptocurrencies, Krugman is asked why he rejects the decentralized vision behind cryptocurrencies. He responds:“We developed this socially ingenious thing: enduring institutions […] and it’s going to be really, really hard to come up with something better.”This is an unpopular view within the crypto world, but I think he’s absolutely right.Ask what has driven the economic vitality of the most advanced nations in the world, and we pretty much know the answer: it’s strong institutions. If you improve a country’s institutions, the society (...)

The #cryptocurrency market, unlike any other market in the world, is very volatile. And investors that are involved in the market have, at one point or the other, faced large losses. The reason for the losses can be and are of multifold. However, in essence, they are all the same; money is lost. In the cryptocurrency market in specific, the reason can be anything from technology shortcomings to general speculation caused volatility. One of the major reasons for the loss in the cryptocurrency market especially is lack of discipline or blatant overconfidence.Irrespective of the reason, getting over losing a lot of money is a whole different ball-game. Transfer #ethereum tokens without Ether — An #erc20 Improvement to Seriously Consider

Ethereum has been around for four years now. The platform that was to “Build Unstoppable Applications” quickly turned out to be a Token Manufacturing Plant which churns out Ethereum tokens for any conceivable idea, object or abstraction imaginable. From those that can be used for ‘Sin Forgiving’ (Jesus Coin) to those that are probably not meant for such use (SpankChain), the tokenization train is seeing more people get on board day by day. However, the train which everyone seems to miss is this one called adoption, also known as ‘getting real users to come on to your platform and do stuff with your highly valuable token’.One of the primary reasons for the low adoption rate is the poor user experience and the high barrier to interaction that this ecosystem imposes on its users. Convincing (...)

The Year of The Ethereum Experimentby Josh Stark, Evan Van Ness, and Daniel ZakrissonEthereum began as a bold experiment. Can we build a universal platform for digital money and assets, un-censorable applications, and decentralized organizations? We started with a slightly smaller experiment: was it possible to launch a #blockchain that could execute arbitrary programs? Over time, the Ethereum community began new experiments. Would developers find it interesting? What applications are actually useful? The community learned from its successes and failures, and iterated on their work. New people joined the community and started running their own experiments. In 2018, the Ethereum community ran more experiments than ever before. What did we learn? This summary of the year in Ethereum is our (...)

15 Ways Stellar is Modernizing Global Financial Institutions

I cringe every time I have to step into a bank. I dislike every aspect of the experience from the polluted lighting, long queues, lack of privacy, to their demeanor of probing why I want to access my money. It’s a nightmare, but that’s only a small part of the problem. The world’s current financial infrastructure is littered with inefficiencies that contribute to high transaction costs, slow money velocity, and lack of global inclusion. These gaps have curtailed growth of communities and leaves billions of people financially underserved. One of my favorite projects that solving these problems is the Stellar Foundation. They realize that society needs a worldwide financial network that is open to anyone, internet like speed and cost for money transfers, and ensures integrity of (...)

#ethereum’s Long Awaited #constantinople Upgrade — What to expect and what you need to know
    ▻https://hackernoon.com/ethereums-long-awaited-constantinople-upgrade-what-to-expect-and-what-yo

Ethereum’s Long Awaited Constantinople Upgrade — What to Expect and What You Need to KnowEthereum’s long awaited Constantinople upgrade was scheduled to occur at block #7080000. Hours before this long awaited upgrade was to occur, the Core Developers issued another postpone as a result from a potential security vulnerability related to one component of the upgrade. As a token holder, there is nothing that needs to be done, both for the upgrade and also for the delay. Full node operators who have already upgraded will need to upgrade again to an emergency version of the Etherum software client or downgrade to the previous version. No new announcement date has been made public for the fork. But this then begs the question, if this is a decentralized network, who then has the right to decide on a  (...)
