For 60 minutes, we will focus on public space sounds during #covid-19-confinement time. If the sound environment of the common spaces has changed, so too has our listening. We hear other things, we discover other forms of life. Here we propose a circular travel around a padded capital.

    ▻http://www.laboiteverte.fr/chants-etranges-de-glace-noire

    http://www.laboiteverte.fr/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/les-chants-etranges-de-la-glace.jpg

“NATIVE INSTRUMENT is a Berlin based sound collaboration bringing together the field recording archive of Felicity Mangan and the precise, minimal vocabulary of Stine Janvin Motland. Their music is built from electronic and vocal adaptations of animal and insect recordings originating mainly from the Australian and North European fauna. With references to electronic dance music and low-fi pop, their mix of bug beats and atmospheric soundscapes uncovers a sonic ambiguity between rural nature, electronics and the human voice.”

Jupiter sounds NASA-Voyager recording - YouTube
    ▻https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWTC7P1Dprw

From an original CD: JUPITER NASA-VOYAGER SPACE SOUNDS (1990) BRAIN/MIND Research
Fascinating recording of Jupiter sounds (electromagnetic “voices”) by NASA-Voyager. The complex interactions of charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind , planetary magnetosphere etc. create vibration “soundscapes”. It sounds very interesting, even scary.
Jupiter is mostly composed of hydrogen and helium. The entire planet is made of gas, with no solid surface under the atmosphere. The pressures and temperatures deep in Jupiter are so high that gases form a gradual transition into liquids which are gradually compressed into a metallic “plasma” in which the molecules have been stripped of their outer electrons. The winds of Jupiter are a thousand metres per second relative to the rotating interior. Jupiter’s magnetic field is four thousand times stronger than Earth’s, and is tipped by 11° degrees of axis spin. This causes the magnetic field to wobble, which has a profound effect on trapped electronically charged particles. This plasma of charged particles is accelerated beyond the magnetosphere of Jupiter to speeds of tens of thousands of kilometres per second. It is these magnetic particle vibrations which generate some of the sound you hear on this recording.

    radio astronomy: a project by r a d i o q u a l i a
    ▻http://www.radio-astronomy.net

adio Astronomy is an art and science project which broadcasts sounds intercepted from space live on the internet and on the airwaves.

The project is a collaboration between r a d i o q u a l i a, and radio telescopes located throughout the world. Together we are creating ’radio astronomy’ in the literal sense - a radio station devoted to broadcasting audio from our cosmos.

    Radio Astronomy has three parts:
    – a sound installation
    – a live on-air radio transmission
    – a live online radio broadcast

Listeners will hear the acoustic output of radio telescopes live. The content of the live transmission will depend on the objects being observed by partner telescopes. On any given occasion listeners may hear the planet Jupiter and its interaction with its moons, radiation from the Sun, activity from far-off pulsars or other astronomical phenomena.

    Broadcasting Sounds from Space

Radio Astronomy correlates the processes associated with broadcast radio - the transmission of audible information, and the processes of radio astronomy - the observation and analysis of radiated signals from planets, stars and other astrophysical objects. The work synthesizes these two areas. The signals from planets and stars are converted into audio and then broadcast on-line and on-air. The project is a literal interpretation of the term, ³radio astronomy². It is a radio station broadcasting audio from space.

r a d i o q u a l i a consider radio telescopes to be radio receivers, which are listening to radio signals being transmitted from planets and stars. Thinking of radio in this way radically enlarges the concept. Radio Astronomy is located within this expanded field of radio.

Many of the sounds emitted by these objects are fascinating from both an aesthetic and conceptual perspective, prompting comparisons with avant-garde music and electronic sound art. Yet very few people have heard these sounds, considering space to be silent, rather than the rich acoustic environment it turns out to be.

The Wild Sanctuary Audio Archive represents a vast and important collection of whole-habitat field recordings and precise metadata dating from the late 1960s. This unique bioacoustic resource contains marine and terrestrial soundscapes representing the voices of living organisms from larvae to large mammals and the numerous tropical, temperate and Arctic biomes from which they come. The catalog currently contains over 4,500 hours of wild soundscapes and in excess of 15,000 identified life forms.

Fully half of the natural soundscapes in this rare set are from habitats that no longer exist, are radically altered because of human endeavor, or have gone altogether silent.

Voices in the Wire | 99% Invisible

The first portable audio recorder was made in 1945 by a man named Tony Schwartz. He moved the VU meter from inside of the unit to the top, so he could see the recording volume. And, he put a strap on it so that he could hang the device over his shoulder. Armed with his recorder (and sometimes a secret microphone attached to his wrist), Schwartz chronicled every sound in his Manhattan neighborhood. He recorded children singing songs in the park, street festival music, jukeboxes in restaurants, vendors peddling vegetables, and more than 700 conversations with cab drivers, just to name a few examples.

Creating the Sounds of Star Wars™ Battlefront™ - Star Wars - Official EA Site
    ▻http://starwars.ea.com/starwars/battlefront/news/creating-the-sounds-of-star-wars-battlefront

    http://content.pulse.ea.com/content/starwars-ea-com/en_US/starwars/battlefront/news-articles/creating-the-sounds-of-star-wars-battlefront/_jcr_content/featuredImage.img.jpg

The DICE sound team has been very fortunate with how much knowledge sharing and support that they have received from Skywalker Sound. Over various visits to Skywalker Ranch, members of the team have been able to meet and discuss the sound of Star Wars™, with Star Wars sound design legends Ben Burtt and Matt Wood, and they have also been given access to the original sounds and stems from the films.

As well as asking how the original sounds were created and the stories and reasoning behind them, the team also brought along Frostbite to demonstrate some of the challenges in creating the audio of Star Wars™ Battlefront™, elaborating on how they would build upon the legacy sounds to fill all of the worlds and experiences that lay ahead. The focus and goal was to embrace the original sounds, staying as true as possible to their original feel and intent.

Whilst at Skywalker Ranch, the sound team also recorded Foley sessions with Dennie Thorpe and Jana Vance, to capture audio source material for all the movement and surface interactions in the game, as well as blaster Foley, capes, and other bespoke recordings that goes to make up the unique Star Wars sounds.

Being so close to the original filming location for Endor, it also made sense to go out into the local woods and capture some new material. DICE’s Audio Director Ben Minto continues:

BEN MINTO: What we were really after were recordings of the “air” or the “feel” of the pacific coastal redwoods, which is the location where the forest moon of Endor was filmed. If you can get away from today’s noise pollution, you can experience this very delicate and quiet sound that is something that we strive to add in as a layer when designing ambiences. It really helps to put the player in that specific environment and sell the sensation of being surrounding by those giant trees.

We spent two days recording in different reserves, capturing the “air” and other obvious Endor sounds, but also looking at how sounds travel through a forest. Clean, real recordings like these are very useful for us when making quadraphonic ambiences and for adding the right sense of space and life; being there in person and experiencing those surroundings makes it easier when trying to recreate that feel in the studio.

Eric Holm - Andøya Subtext Recordings.
"Eric Holm LP “Andøya” on Subtext Recordings, which was recorded on the Norwegian Arctic island of Andøya by contact micing a telegraph pole supporting high voltage power lines."

    http://www.swqw.fr/eric_holm-andoya.jpg

“Developed entirely from a single contact mic recording from a remote telegraph pole that carries high voltage lines that connect the island’s array of military listening stations, Holm crafts a detailed expansion of this solitary sonic moment, shaping the sound into an immersive meditation on man, nature and isolation. The telegraph pole connected to a seemingly endless network of traversing lines harnesses the dense ambiance of the landscape, both absorbing and distilling the essence of Andøya’s harsh beatific character, and considers the position of microphone as witness within a vast cycle of physical transition and terrestrial flux.

The release sonically frames Holm’s adept technical crafting of his source material, bringing to mind both the glacial recordings of Chris Watson and the expansive mechanised textures of classic Chain Reaction.”

    Eavesdropping on Ecosystems
    ▻http://www.sciencemag.org/content/343/6173/834.full

Sueur and his colleagues weren’t interested in exactly which species were calling. Instead, he says they wanted “to take a global measure of the acoustic output of the community.” Their goal was an algorithm that could boil hours of acoustic data down to a single number describing how an ecosystem’s acoustic energy is distributed across the frequency spectrum and over time.

    [...]

The boom in sound-recording studies poses a challenge familiar in other fields: a glut of data. Pijanowsky’s lab alone has amassed about 85 terabytes of sound—more than 100,000 hours—in just 5 years. “This is a science that’s plagued by the big data challenges that you see in, say, genetics,” he says. Many researchers already have libraries of field recordings that, if played in real time, would be longer than their careers. “We know that we’re not going to be able to listen to it all,” says computer scientist Michael Towsey of the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

To get around that problem, he’s developing ways to navigate soundscapes by sight, creating color-coded spectrograms that trained eyes can interpret at a glance. Towsey describes the visualizations as “#acoustic_weather” charts. Some show how the spectrum of sounds shifts over a single day, while others assemble daily records into long-term snapshots to capture changes between seasons or years. That’s akin to studying the “#acoustic_climate,” he notes. And “when we start thinking about the acoustic climate, then we can start thinking about acoustic climate change.” Year-to-year comparisons could eventually highlight subtle and potentially problematic changes, he predicts, such as changing rain patterns or shifts in bird activity.

    http://www.sciencemag.org/content/343/6173/834/F6.large.jpg

Computer scientist Michael Towsey combines 8 months of continuous recordings at a research station in Brisbane, Australia, into a single image. Colors indicate different acoustic indices. At dawn (left curve), a morning bird chorus (blue) is obvious during the Australian spring and early summer (October through December), but fades later in the year. Horizontal green streaks indicate heavy rainfall in January and February. At dusk (right curve), cicada activity is evident in the spring and summer months (green); by winter, the night is increasingly silent.
