    Turkey : Erdogan’s worrisome transformation | Forum #fifdh17

Who will put a stop to Recep Tayyip #Erdogan increasingly authoritarian rule? No one and nothing it seems, as the clampdown on freedom, dissent and opposition continue unabated in Turkey.

Over the last eight months, under an extended state of emergency, more than a 130,000 public servants, intellectuals, lawyers, judges, teachers, and journalists have lost their job or have been sacked. It is estimated that more than 40,000 people have been jailed, some without any formal charges and often barred from receiving legal counsel.

The President and his supporters justify their actions as a necessary response to the failed coup of Summer 2016. But a close look at what is happening in Turkey also shows how fast, once elected, a strong man can undermine the rule of law from within and put democracy at risk.

In Erdogan, L’ivresse du pouvoir by Gilles Perrier and Gilles Cayatte, Erdogan’s political journey from Mayor of Istanbul to the Presidency is recounted by friends and foes alike.
