#Finland_100 — for all ?
Today is #Suomi100. A celebration of 100 years since Finland declared independence, towards the back end of the First World War, and after the Russian Revolution had offered an opportunity for Finland to establish its own government and to remove itself from the sovereignty of the soon-to-be Soviet Union. Of course, that hasn’t been the end of Finland’s problems with its troublesome neighbours as the Winter War of 1939–1940 and the loss of territory at the end of the Second World War made quite plain. In the postwar period, Finland had to proceed cautiously in building its external relations, and it didn’t join the European Union until 1995 (although it did join the European Free Trade Area in 1961).
