Pour alimenter leurs #datacenters IA, les géants de la tech ont voulu s’affranchir du réseau électrique en produisant leur propre énergie. Bonne idée, mauvaise énergie : le modèle se déploie au gaz naturel, et les promesses climatiques des Big Tech sont en train de s’effacer.

Depuis plus d’une décennie, #Amazon, #Meta, #Google et #Microsoft comptent parmi les plus gros acheteurs d’#électricité #renouvelable au monde. Rien qu’aux #États-Unis, les quatre mastodontes ont contracté pour 11,3 GW d’électricité renouvelable en 2024, soit l’équivalent de la capacité totale installée en #Floride, troisième État le plus peuplé du pays. Leur modèle reposait essentiellement sur des #PPA (Power Purchase Agreements), des contrats d’achat à long terme signés avec des fournisseurs d’#énergie #bas-carbone.

Mais avec l’#IA-générative, ces PPA ne suffisent plus. Les délais de raccordement au réseau deviennent rédhibitoires et la tension monte fortement autour des hausses du prix de l’électricité engendrées par la multiplication des data centers. Les GAFAM explorent donc d’autres options, et en particulier celle de la « colocation » : construire data centers, centrales et capacités de stockage dans un même parc industriel, reliés directement sans passer par le réseau. Google fait figure de pionnier. Fin 2024, la firme de Mountain View s’est associée à un développeur d’infrastructures et à un fonds d’investissement dans une joint-venture dédiée, avec la promesse d’une alimentation à 80 % décarbonée sur site.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio waded into the surprisingly fraught politics of typefaces on Tuesday with an order halting the State Department’s official use of Calibri, reversing a 2023 Biden-era directive that Mr. Rubio called a “wasteful” sop to diversity.

While mostly framed as a matter of clarity and formality in presentation, Mr. Rubio’s directive to all diplomatic posts around the world blamed “radical” diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility programs for what he said was a misguided and ineffective switch from the serif typeface Times New Roman to sans serif Calibri in official department paperwork.

In an “Action Request” memo obtained by The New York Times, Mr. Rubio said that switching back to the use of Times New Roman would “restore decorum and professionalism to the department’s written work.” Calibri is “informal” when compared to serif typefaces like Times New Roman, the order said, and “clashes” with the department’s official letterhead.

A State Department official confirmed the document’s authenticity.

Mr. Rubio’s directive, under the subject line “Return to Tradition: Times New Roman 14-Point Font Required for All Department Paper,” served as the latest attempt by the Trump administration to stamp out remnants of diversity initiatives across the federal government.

Then-Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken ordered the 2023 typeface shift on the recommendation of the State Department’s office of diversity and inclusion, which Mr. Rubio has since abolished. The change was meant to improve accessibility for readers with disabilities, such as low vision and dyslexia, and people who use assistive technologies, such as screen readers.

Calibri, sometimes described as soft and modern, is typically considered more accessible for people with reading challenges thanks to its simpler shapes and wider spacing, which make its letters easier to distinguish. Mr. Blinken’s move was applauded by accessibility advocates.

But Mr. Rubio’s order rejected the grounds for the switch. The change, he allowed, “was not among the department’s most illegal, immoral, radical or wasteful instances of D.E.I.A.,” the acronym for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. But Mr. Rubio called it a failure by its own standards, saying that “accessibility-based document remediation cases” at the department had not declined.

“Switching to Calibri achieved nothing except the degradation of the department’s official correspondence,” Mr. Rubio said. He noted that Times New Roman had been the department’s official typeface for nearly 20 years until the 2023 change. (Before 2004, the State Department used Courier New.)

Echoing President Trump’s call for classical style in federal architecture, Mr. Rubio’s order cited the origins of serif typefaces in Roman antiquity. Those typefaces, which are used by The New York Times, include small strokes at the edges of many characters.

Admirers say those flourishes make letters look more elegant and make them easier to distinguish from one another, even though they can also create a sense of clutter.

Serif typefaces are “generally perceived to connote tradition, formality and ceremony,” Mr. Rubio’s order said, adding that they were used by the White House, Supreme Court and other state and federal government entities, as well as in the script on the side of Air Force One.

Many diplomats are unhappy with changes Mr. Rubio has made to the department’s structure and leadership, and have reported badly damaged morale within their ranks. But the Biden administration’s move to Calibri prompted some grumbling from some traditionalists who preferred Times New Roman. Mr. Blinken also changed the standard font size, from 14-point to 15-point, requiring extra keystrokes that some diplomats found annoying.

Florida building ’#Alligator_Alcatraz' migrant detention centre in #Everglades

Florida has begun building a detention centre - dubbed the ’Alligator Alcatraz’ - to temporarily hold migrants on an air strip in the Everglades.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the facility would be funded “in large part” by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s shelter and services programme, which was previously used to provide accommodation and other aid for undocumented migrants.

The plan has been criticised by several lawmakers, including the mayor of Miami-Dade County, who argued it could be environmentally “devastating”.

The proposal comes as Trump tries to deliver on a campaign pledge to ramp up deportations of illegal migrants.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people’s mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens,” Noem said in a statement.

“We will expand facilities and bed space in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida.”

The facility is to be built on the site of the #Dade-Collier_Training_and_Transition_Airport, a public airport around 58km (36 miles) from Miami. It will cost about $450m (£332m) a year to run.

In a video posted on X, Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier called the airport a “virtually abandoned facility”.

He said the detention centre could be built in 30 to 60 days and hold an estimated 1,000 people.

He argued the location acted as a natural deterrent for escapees.

Uthmeier said in the video: “[If] people, get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”

The mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniela Levine Cava, a Democrat, criticised the plan, saying “the impacts to the Everglades ecosystem could be devastating”.

The Florida Everglades are a unique environmental region comprising marshes, prairies, forests, mangroves and estuaries. Uthmeier said the facility would not be located within #Everglades_National_Park.

Florida Officials Are Telling Residents Who Don’t Evacuate to Write Their Names on Themselves So Their Bodies Can Be Identified

Florida officials are telling residents who don’t intend to evacuate from the areas expected to be hit hardest by Hurricane Milton to write their names and the phone number of a family member on themselves so their bodies can be identified and their families find out about their deaths, according to CNN’s Paul Murphy.

On Tuesday, Murphy repeated the message one local chief of police had for his constituents.

“It’s the same message we’re hearing for people from leaders across the state: If you stay, they can not get you. They were able to do some water rescues in Helene; that will not happen with Milton,” began Murphy. “Once the winds, which are forecasted to start here at tropical storm force gusts, once they start tomorrow at around 8 a.m., he expects that by noon, they’re not going to be able — they’re going to have to evacuate the island themselves. So starting at noon tomorrow, if you’re here, there will not be help coming for you. You are on your own.”

“And he’s made that very clear. It’s that same message we’re hearing from officials: Write your name, write your number, write someone else’s number, your date of birth on you,” he concluded. “Because when they come looking for you, they want to know who to contact because you decided to stay.”

“Yeah, Paul, that is a somber message that we are hearing from folks,” replied anchor Boris Sanchez, who has also been on the ground in the Sunshine State.

In an appearance on CNN Monday night, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor had a similar warning, saying she “could say without any dramatization whatsoever: If you chose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die.”

“This is something that I have never seen in my life,” she continued. “People need to get out.”

Hurricane Milton could cost insurers up to $100 billion, analysts say

Hurricane Milton could result in losses of up to $100 billion for the global insurance industry, creating a surge in 2025 reinsurance prices that could boost some insurance companies’ shares, analysts said on Wednesday.
The Category 4 hurricane is expected to make landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida late on Wednesday or early Thursday. It is potentially one of the most destructive to hit the region, which is recovering from Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago.
Insured losses from Milton could range from $60 billion to $100 billion if the hurricane makes direct landfall in the densely populated area of Tampa, analysts at Morningstar DBRS said.
A loss of $100 billion would put Milton on par with Katrina in 2005, they added, saying that insured losses would likely be “substantial but not catastrophic”.
Katrina caused the largest insured loss from a hurricane.
The second-largest loss came from Ian, which hit Florida in 2022 and led to losses of around $60 billion.
RBC analysts estimated Milton would cause similar losses to Ian that should be “very manageable” for the insurance sector.
Analysts at Jefferies estimated a mid-double-digit billion-dollar insured loss would follow a major hurricane impact in one of Florida’s most heavily populated regions.
“A 1-in-100-year event is estimated by some to result in $175 billion in losses for landfall in the Tampa region, and $70 billion in losses in the Fort Myers region,” they wrote in a note, outlining an extreme scenario.

S&P analysts noted on Wednesday the scope of damages “remains highly uncertain” but that it could match the $60 billion caused by Ian in 2022.

INDUSTRY RESPONSE
Insurers and reinsurers - who insure the insurers - have responded to rising losses from natural catastrophes, which scientists say are being exacerbated by climate change, by raising rates and excluding higher-risk business.
“Better reinsurance contract terms, broader earnings diversification and bigger reserve buffers should put the sector in better stead than before,” the RBC analysts said in a note.

Reinsurers fix prices for many insurance contracts on Jan. 1.
Analysts at Peel Hunt said on Wednesday that a major hurricane making landfall across Tampa Bay and travelling west across the Florida Peninsula would be similar to a realistic disaster scenario set out by Lloyd’s earlier this year, which projected a $134-billion loss for the insurance sector.
Lloyd’s maintains a set of mandatory realistic disaster scenarios to stress-test both individual syndicates and the market as a whole. The event scenarios are regularly reviewed to ensure they represent material catastrophe risks.

En Floride, la marée rouge tue la faune… et le plaisir des vacanciers Jean-Louis Bordeleau

Une « marée » d’algues rouges toxique empoisonne depuis des semaines les côtes de Floride. Pas près de s’estomper, cette vague de pollution naturelle décime la faune marine et pose de sérieux risques pour la santé des résidents et des vacanciers.

Sophie Carrière espérait des vacances tranquilles sur la plage floridienne de Sarasota. La Québécoise et son conjoint passent l’hiver les pieds dans le sable de ce coin paradisiaque depuis 1978. Cette année, une « marée rouge » d’une rare ampleur a sapé leur bonheur.

« Quand je suis arrivée le 25 février, j’ai marché jusqu’au bord de l’eau sans savoir qu’il y avait des difficultés avec la marée rouge. Ce sont les centaines de poissons morts et l’odeur qui m’en ont informée », raconte-t-elle. « Les plages sont vides, car c’est insoutenable. »

C’est au large que se laissent découvrir quelques filets rougeâtres qui confirment la présence d’une « marée rouge ». Ce phénomène est la conséquence d’une recrudescence extraordinaire d’« algues rouges ». Ces micro-organismes pullulent dans les eaux tropicales et relâchent des vapeurs toxiques, rendant l’air pestilentiel. L’eau océanique devient mortelle pour la faune. Une large partie de la côte ouest floridienne est ainsi déserte depuis des semaines.

« On s’étouffe simplement en respirant », témoigne Sophie Carrière. « Impossible de réprimer la toux. Puis viennent les éternuements et, pour certains, les yeux coulent et piquent comme en saison d’allergie. » Ces algues empoisonnent la vie de tous les résidents côtiers, dit-elle, car « même dans la piscine, tous les gens toussent sans arrêt ».

La vie marine en pâtit. Pour preuve, des milliers de poissons morts jonchent les 300 kilomètres de berges touchés. Cette marée est si importante que les autorités ont retiré près de 20 tonnes d’animaux morts des plages depuis décembre, rapportent des médias locaux.
« Ils sont en plein soleil sur le sable, et ça sent mauvais. Même les oiseaux charognards n’en veulent pas », de dire la Floridienne d’adoption.

Des vidéos qui circulent sur les réseaux sociaux illustrent l’étendue des dégâts. On peut y voir des centaines de poissons de toutes tailles, morts, flottant à la surface.

L’Institut de recherche sur les poissons et la faune de Floride se démène pour sauver les grands animaux marins qui échouent sur les plages. Depuis le début de l’éclosion de cette vague d’algues rouges, en octobre dernier, leur équipe a récupéré les cadavres de plus d’une centaine de tortues de mer. Certaines d’entre elles pèsent plus de 100 kilogrammes. Une dizaine de lamantins sans vie ont aussi été retrouvés inertes sur les plages.

Un problème naturel amplifié par l’humain
Ce n’est en réalité pas la première marée rouge que doivent traverser les centaines de milliers de Floridiens de la côte ouest. Les Premières Nations de la Floride recensaient déjà ce phénomène il y a des centaines d’années. De petites marées rouges apparaissent presque chaque année. Cependant, la durée et l’ampleur de la marée rouge de 2023 frappent les esprits.

« Ce n’est pas la pire qu’on ait vue, mais c’est assez terrible. C’est très tôt en saison », nuance Shawn Landry, professeur, chercheur et directeur à l’Institut de l’eau de l’Université South Florida.

Comme les cyanobactéries (algues bleues et vertes) de nos contrées nordiques, ces algues rouges se multiplient à cause de l’azote que l’humain rejette dans la nature. « Les gens qui mettent du fertilisant sur leur pelouse. Ça se ramasse dans l’océan et ça nourrit la marée rouge, explique le biologiste. Nous, comme collectivité, on n’est pas la cause de la marée rouge, mais on la rend pire. Les gens doivent comprendre que c’est nous, le problème. »

Les marées rouges prennent habituellement fin de façon naturelle. « Si on pouvait avoir de la pluie, l’eau fraîche aiderait à résoudre le problème », note-t-il. Impossible, cependant, de prévoir le moment où cette marée rouge prendra enfin le large.

Plusieurs s’attendent à ce que cette invasion algale dure encore au moins un mois. Le festival annuel BeachFest a d’ores et déjà annulé son édition de 2023 après avoir déterminé, avec l’aide de la Ville et du département de la santé du comté de Pinellas, que la marée rouge se poursuivrait probablement jusqu’à la mi-avril.

Work crews were pumping millions of gallons of contaminated wastewater into an ecologically sensitive Florida bay on Sunday, as they tried to prevent the “imminent” collapse of a storage reservoir at an old phosphate mine.

Officials in Manatee county extended an evacuation zone overnight and warned Sunday that up to 340m gallons could engulf the area in “a 20ft wall of water” if they could not repair the breach at the Piney Point reservoir in the Tampa Bay area, north of Bradenton.[...]

The pond at the abandoned phosphate mine sits in a stack of phosphogypsum, a radioactive waste product from fertiliser manufacturing. The pond contains small amounts of naturally occurring radium and uranium. The stacks can also release large concentrations of radon gas.

Le « passeport vaccinal », un document certifiant que son détenteur a été vacciné contre le Covid-19, a été interdit en Floride au nom du respect des « libertés individuelles », a annoncé vendredi 2 avril le gouverneur républicain de cet Etat très touristique. Le décret du gouverneur Ron DeSantis interdit aux services administratifs de cet Etat du sud-est du pays de délivrer des « passeports vaccinaux », ou tout type de « document visant à attester » qu’une personne a reçu un vaccin contre le Covid-19.Le texte empêche aussi les entreprises du « Sunshine State » d’exiger de leurs clients ce type de « passeport vaccinal » ou une preuve d’immunisation au virus. Pour M. DeSantis, proche allié de l’ancien président Donald Trump, « les “passeports vaccinaux” limitent les libertés individuelles » et menacent le secret médical.« C’est totalement inacceptable qu’un gouvernement ou que le secteur privé vous impose de montrer une preuve de vaccination simplement pour participer à la société », avait asséné lundi Ron DeSantis lors d’une conférence de presse. « Vous voulez aller au cinéma ? Est-ce vous devrez montrer ça ? Non. Vous voulez aller voir un match ? Non. Vous voulez aller dans un parc d’attraction ? Non. Nous ne sommes pas d’accord avec ça », avait-il poursuivi.Cette annonce survient après la publication d’un article du Washington Post selon lequel l’administration de Joe Bien travaillerait à la mise en place de normes gouvernementales pour un futur passeport vaccinal en vue d’accompagner la levée des restrictions sanitaires dans le pays.
La création d’un passeport sanitaire est aussi en discussion dans l’Union européenne, qui voudrait lancer ce type d’initiative cet été pour les déplacements en son sein. La Chine a de son côté annoncé début mars un « certificat de santé » numérique pour les Chinois qui voudraient voyager à l’étranger.Plus de 6 millions de personnes ont reçu au moins une dose d’un vaccin contre le Covid-19 en Floride, où la population totale avoisine les 22 millions d’habitants. A partir de lundi, tous les individus adultes souhaitant se faire vacciner seront éligibles, et ce sans prescription médicale.

Confederate Monuments Are Now Coming Down All Over the South

Over the last twelve hours, three statues associated with the Confederacy have been removed as protesters continue to demonstrate against police brutality and racial inequality.

As residents in more than 40 cities have taken to the streets over the last week to engage in both peaceful and destructive protests over the police killing of George Floyd, some have turned their focus on one particular historical wound: Confederate monuments.

Monday evening, in three Southern states—Florida, Alabama, and Virginia—protesters toppled graffiti-covered statues celebrating the former Confederate government that fought to uphold the institution of slavery, as crowds cheered.

“With the recent death of many of those across this nation, we say enough is enough. We are done dying, and we’re done being reminded,” William Barnes, president of the Birmingham Urban League, said in a statement calling for an Alabama monument’s removal. “We’re done being reminded of the atrocities against African Americans.”

On Monday night, a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was toppled from its pedestal in front of his namesake high school in Montgomery, Alabama. As the figure fell, a small crowd cheered and honked before briefly singing: “Hey, he-ey, goodbye.”

The Montgomery Police Department said multiple people had been arrested in the incident, which occurred on a state holiday commemorating President of the Confederate States Jefferson Davis, but declined to provide any additional details. The Monday holiday is one of three in Alabama that celebrate the Confederacy.

“The statue was damaged and there are suspects in custody. Charges are pending,” Montgomery Police Captain Saba Coleman said.

In Birmingham, demonstrators attempted to take down a Confederate Soldiers and Sailors monument on Sunday evening—a 115-year-old statue that has been at the center of a legal fight between the city and the state attorney general’s office.

“It used to be a sore. It’s cancer. It’s eating away at the community,” Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson said Monday during a press conference demanding its removal, adding that it represented hundreds of years of torment. “We cannot grow, we cannot expand with this monster wings over us, choking us, and it’s got to leave.”

While protesters were unsuccessful in toppling the 52-foot-tall statue, some residents tore down the monument of Charles Linn, one of Birmingham’s founders and a former Confederate Navy officer, that was also in the park. Two other statues on either side of the Confederate memorial—the Spirit of the American Doughboy and the memorial to Spanish American War Veterans—were also defaced with graffiti.

At around 9 p.m. on Monday, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin stepped in to finish the job protesters started, vowing to remove the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors monument that has stood in Linn Park since 1905.

“In order to prevent more civil unrest, it is very imperative that we remove this statue,” Woodfin told the Birmingham News. As of Monday evening, demolition crews had already started to dismantle the monument.

In Florida, a bust of Lee that sat on a pedestal in downtown Fort Myers was removed at the request of Sons of Confederate Veterans, according to the Orlando Sentinel. On Monday evening, protesters were seen surrounding the pedestal—that did not include the bust of the Civil War general—during a protest for Floyd.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy also took preemptive measures in Alexandria, Virginia, on Tuesday morning, removing the Appomattox statue that has stood in the middle of Old Town since 1889. The bronze statue, which commemorated Confederate soldiers from the area, has been relocated to an undisclosed location amid the ongoing protests and the statue’s pillar will also be removed to avoid any damage.

“Alexandria, like all great cities, is constantly changing and evolving,” Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said on Twitter Tuesday.

Wilson later told Washingtonian magazine the city has been in discussions with the United Daughters of the Confederacy for some time about removing the statue, but decided to accelerate the process on Monday evening to “ensure there was no drama about it. We did not want to see a repeat of Charlottesville or anything else.”

The United Daughters of the Confederacy did not immediately return The Daily Beast’s request for comment.

The push toward eradicating old tributes to the Confederacy has sped up over the last week in several other states. In Richmond, a Robert E. Lee memorial was covered in graffiti Saturday night—as was a Stonewall Jackson statue. Several miles away, the headquarters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was similarly vandalized with the phrases “police are creepy” and fuck racists” before it was set on fire, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The Confederate Defenders statue in Charleston, South Carolina, was also spray painted, the Post and Courier reported. And in North Carolina, a crowd set fire to the Market House in Fayetteville. The National Historic Landmark constructed in 1832 was used as a town hall and a slave market.

The protests raging across the nation all center around George Floyd, who died May 25 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee to the 46-year-old’s neck for more than eight minutes.

While the county autopsy reports that Floyd died of cardiac arrest and had underlying health issues, an independent report commissioned by his family states that the 46-year-old was in good health and died of strangulation from pressure to his back and neck.

After a national outcry, the four officers involved in the incident were fired and Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Protesters are now demanding the other three officers be charged for what some are calling a “legalized lynching.”

Abstract

Massive declines in population abundances of marine animals have been documented over century-long time scales. However, analogous loss of spatial extent of habitat-forming organisms is less well known because georeferenced data are rare over long time scales, particularly in subtidal, tropical marine regions. We use high-resolution historical nautical charts to quantify changes to benthic structure over 240 years in the Florida Keys, finding an overall loss of 52% (SE, 6.4%) of the area of the seafloor occupied by corals. We find a strong spatial dimension to this decline; the spatial extent of coral in Florida Bay and nearshore declined by 87.5% (SE, 7.2%) and 68.8% (SE, 7.5%), respectively, whereas that of offshore areas of coral remained largely intact. These estimates add to finer-scale loss in live coral cover exceeding 90% in some locations in recent decades. The near-complete elimination of the spatial coverage of nearshore coral represents an underappreciated spatial component of the shifting baseline syndrome, with important lessons for other species and ecosystems. That is, modern surveys are typically designed to assess change only within the species’ known, extant range. For species ranging from corals to sea turtles, this approach may overlook spatial loss over longer time frames, resulting in both overly optimistic views of their current conservation status and underestimates of their restoration potential.

Une arrivée sur les îles du nord (Antilles) en ouragan majeur prévue le 6 septembre

Le jour s’est levé depuis 2h aux Antilles, ce qui permet d’observer #Irma sur le canal visible. La structure cyclonique est impressionnante. Le deuxième passage de l’avion de reconnaissance confirme une pression de 929 hPa dans le centre de l’ouragan. Le quadrant nord-est est le plus puissant avec des vents soutenus relevés de 165 noeuds au niveau de vol de l’avion, retenus à 150 noeuds au sol soit près de 280 km/h. Irma est donc un ouragan de catégorie 5 particulièrement sévère.
