    Spectral Ranking

We sketch the history of #spectral_ranking—a general umbrella name for techniques that apply the theory of linear maps (in particular, eigenvalues and eigenvectors) to matrices that do not represent geometric transformations, but rather some kind of #relationship between entities. Albeit recently made famous by the ample press coverage of #Google’s #PageRank algorithm, spectral ranking was devised more thana century ago, and has been studied in tournament ranking, psychology, social sciences, bibliometrics, economy and choice theory. …

Avoiding Consumer Lock-ins with the Decentralised WebThis is the third blog post in our series exploring aspects of the Arweave’s decentralised, permanent web. You can catch up with the other parts here and here. If you are like me, you have been an avid user of #google’s Gmail service since the first few months of the ‘private’ beta over a decade ago. Over this time, Google has rendered a fantastic service to us, with consistent releases of new features, fast and reliable service (I can only remember it being offline once when I needed it), and the simplicity that only great products can provide.Over this period, I have also given out my personal Gmail email address to hundreds of people — many of whom only have this mechanism of contacting me. Google has also sold access to my profile (...)

New technologies are evolving rapidly. Some of the newest solutions are gaining popularity every day. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is nothing new, but perfecting it with machine learning may shed a new light on OCR. It’s obviously a broad subject. Nevertheless, I’ll try to briefly introduce you to the machine learning within OCR implementation on Android. I’ll also present some of its functions, basing on an easily available software called Google Firebase ML Kit.What is OCR?Nowadays, almost everything is digital. Books, newspapers, articles — name it. So what can be done to make a written or printed text digitized or even translated? Optical Character Recognition (OCR) comes with the solution. It’s capable of finding the text on the images and making it digital.Whenever you need to (...)

Today The Country Is Mocking Politicians, They Should Also Be Criticizing #google’s CEOPhoto by Goran Ivos on UnsplashThe latest congressional technology hearing was as cringeworthy as you would expect. There were politicians who thought Google was the same company as Apple. There were politicians that wondered why Google was censoring hate-speech. There were politicians that thought Sundar Pichai’s salary and some aggressive alpha-male shouting would enable him to reveal the answer to the age old mystery of “is Google tracking our every step?”Confused? So am I.▻https://medium.com/media/58608e2d554e15682f2d4b0e332d5c9c/hrefThrough all the hardships, Pichai remained calm and collected. He provided insight to a group of politicians who clearly lacked expertise. This is difficult to do and I give (...)

Configuring #google’s Pixelbook to Contribute to Go
    ▻https://hackernoon.com/configuring-googles-pixelbook-to-contribute-to-go-2be955c21936?source=rs

In my previous article I’ve explained how I’ve set up my Google Pixelbook for development in Go. Since tomorrow starts Gophercon UK, I’m in the mood for digging a little deeper, so I decided to make a contribution to the Go language with my new setup. If you have never contributed to the Go language I strongly suggest you check the guide on this link. I’ll cover some aspects of it over the course of this text, but in case of doubt please go to the source. The first thing you need before contributing to Go (besides having Go installed) is to sign a CLA, the Contributor Licensing Agreement. I have already signed it, so I’ll skip this step. If you haven’t signed it yet please follow the instructions on this link.Configuring gitgit already comes pre-installed in the Pixelbook’s Linux container, so (...)

Why Europe got tough on Google but the U.S. couldn’t - The Washington Post

Which leaves government regulators. The Europeans seem to be more resistant to #Google’s lobbying power, perhaps because they have far more restrictive campaign finance laws. In addition, Europeans have been far more skeptical about the surveillance capitalism that Google and Facebook practice, in which your every move is part of their data record of your life. (Witness the “right to be forgotten,” a European legal innovation.) One could imagine a politician like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, raised under their constant surveillance of East Germany’s #Stasi secret police, being rather offended by Google’s ad tech following her everywhere on the Web (…).

#Google’s AI Acquisition Blurs Lines Between Futuristic Visions and Business-as-Usual | Singularity Hub

“Google buys cutting-edge technology when they think there’s good tech and good people,” said long-time Google watcher Ezra Gotthiel, a senior analyst at Technology Business Research. “I think they have that sense of ‘I’m just adding to my portfolio, I just want to get better and better products and people, and I have all this money sitting around that otherwise I just have to invest at low interest rates.’”

DeepMind’s version of artificial intelligence is particularly well suited to search.
