Last week the tech world gathered at the Moscone Center in San Francisco for Google Cloud Next, the annual event focussing on Google’s latest cloud solutions, the future of AI and machine learning. A lot of what was announced has an impact on our work. Let’s take a look at the exciting news!Google Cloud versus the restThis was the first edition Google Cloud Next with Thomas Kurian as CEO of Google Cloud, as he took over from Diane Green end of last year. He made it clear that Google will be focusing more on enterprise — while still embracing startups — and open source to strengthen its multi-cloud infrastructure offering. We’re committed to substantially expanding the scale of our go-to-market teams in order to help more customers use our technologyThomas Kurian, CEO Google CloudAs we can see (...)

Build versus Buy: does MLaaS fit your data science project’s needs and how do you evaluate across vendors?Making a build or buy decision at the start of any data science project can seem daunting — let’s review aAlmost every major cloud provider now offers a custom machine learning service— from Google Cloud’s AutoML Vision Beta, to Microsoft Azure’s Custom Vision Preview, and IBM Watson’s Visual Recognition service, the field of computer vision is no exception.Perhaps your team has been in this Build or Buy predicament? From the marketing perspective, these managed ML services are positioned for companies that are just building up their data science teams or whose teams are primarily composed of data analysts, BI specialists, or software engineers (who might be transitioning to data (...)

One of the primary motivations for using the cloud are flexibility and cost saving. The problem is that without ongoing management and oversight, the cloud budget can grow to dimensions that eliminate profitability.A recent study on the cost of using the cloud has shown that companies pay an average of 35% more on cloud services than they really should. A total of over $60 billion is being wasted on cloud services that are not in use. In this article, I will share my conclusions from recent cloud cost optimization processes and review a number of ways and tools to significantly reduce cloud costs 30–50%, without sacrificing performance. The recommendations in this article are valid for all cloud vendors unless otherwise specified.Tools for managing cloud costsBefore you start saving it is (...)

    Visualizing Cold Starts

I wrote a lot about cold starts of #serverless functions. The articles are full of charts and numbers which are hopefully useful but might be hard to internalize. I decided to come up with a way to represent colds starts visually.I created HTTP functions that serve geographic maps (map credit Open Street Map). The map is a combination of small square tiles; each tile is 256 by 256 pixels. My selected map view consists of 12 tiles, so 12 requests are made to the serverless function to load a single view.During each experiment, I load the map and then zoom-in three times. The very first view hits the function in a cold state. Subsequently, the zoomed views are loaded from the warm function. There is a timer next to the map which shows the total time elapsed since the beginning until the (...)

This guide walks you through setting up a free bucket to serve a static website through a custom domain name using Google Cloud Platform services.Sign in to Google Cloud Platform, navigate to Cloud DNS service and create a new public DNS zone:By default it will have a NS (Nameserver) and a SOA (Start of Authority) records:Go to you domain registrar, in my case I purchased a domain name from GoDaddy (super cheap). Add the nameserver names that were listed in your NS record:PS: It can take some time for the changes on GoDaddy to propagate through to Google Cloud DNS.Next, verify you own the domain name using the Open Search Console. Many methods are available (HTML Meta data, Google Analytics, etc). The easiest one is DNS verification through a TXT record:Add the TXT record to your DNS zone (...)

It took us less than a month to go from free to this no thanks to Google’s non existent emails. Jump to the code about halfway through if you are having a similar problem with Google Places API.When I first started KinkBNB in 2015, I bought an off-the-shelf AirBNB clone codebase to build the first version on. One of the things we had to do was hook it up to Google Places API with an API key. It was amazing to me how it transformed the dead piece of software we’d gotten from an off-shore programming company into something that seemed to work. It was only after we got into operation that the problem became clear — despite the fact that the software worked, it didn’t actually monetize our traffic because AirBNB’s business model only works at scale. It took us two different packages to come to (...)

My name is Daniel. I’m the founder of Pioneer. Our mission is to scalably identify and nurture the creative outsiders of the world.Traditional institutions like the Ivy League try to solve this problem by relying on a small set of individuals to screen thousands of applications. This doesn’t scale. And it leaves many geniuses (especially those from non-traditional backgrounds) undiscovered. We’re trying something radically different. We’re trying to find these “Lost Einsteins” by building an online game. Fortnite, for productivity. Players are rewarded based on the progress they make on their project. Every month, we fund the best with a $1,000 grant and up to $100,000 in follow-on investment.Just a few days ago we announced the winners of our first Pioneer Tournament. By Dayne SorvistoHere’s the problem at hand: You have a directory (or many directories) full of images, videos and other media formats. Maybe your old hard drive is full of vacation photos and videos you recorded years ago and you’d like to sift through quickly and efficiently.Let’s make the problem even more challenging and say you’re looking for a very specific image or video file but you there’s no way you have the time to manually sort through all the files, watch all the videos or search through all your images. You wish there were a way to write a bash script to do it for you … well, there is.Computer vision nowadays to use the extremely powerful facial recognition and object detection algorithms that have been making waves in the ML community lately. On April 17, 2018 version 2 of the Dialogflow API was made generally available. It marked the end of a beta phase that started back in November 2017.Our API V2 now serves as the default API for all new Dialogflow agents, and all new feature upgrades will only be released for API V2.I remember reading the above in the announcement blog post, telling myself to upgrade my “I Owe You” Google Assistant bot as a way to learn about the new API. Last weekend, I did exactly that and this blog post explains my approach.Target AudienceThe main focus of this post is on the migration from an existing Dialogflow project that uses v1 of the API to the new API v2.If you’re new to Dialogflow, I recommend to get started with ▻https://dialogflow.com/docs/getting-started/basics, it contains the necessary steps (...)

Couple of months ago, we were tackling challenges with scalability of system and were in pursuit of finding right orchestration tools which can help in scaling systems quickly. This draft is outline of things we have tried and learned along the way, most of things might sound familiar to you. A Quick glance of things we came across while building fleets on Kubernetes. We started exploring popular project managed by Google for orchestration management, Kubernetes for DevOps. Starting with two weeks of learning curves, we get our working staging system in kubes (kubernetes in short) and did small working setup to visualize the power of this orchestration framework.MicroservicesMicroservice architectures have been trending because its architectural style aims to tackle the problems of (...)
