Ukraine Awards Major Lithium Project to Investors With Links to Trump
    ▻https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/08/world/europe/trump-lauder-ukraine-lithium.html

The winning consortium is closely connected to the Trump administration. It includes #Ronald_Lauder, a cosmetics heir who has known Mr. Trump since college and planted the idea in his mind of buying resource-rich Greenland. The other investor is TechMet, an energy firm partly owned by a U.S. government investment agency created during Mr. Trump’s first term.

    [...]

Last spring, Kyiv signed a deal granting the United States a stake in its mineral resources, a move that was widely seen as an effort by Kyiv to lock in American support through business ties.

The agreement created a joint U.S.-Ukraine fund to invest in future natural resource projects. Ukrainian officials have since sought to show they can deliver results and pitched the lithium field that was ultimately awarded to Mr. Lauder and TechMet as a potential pilot project under the deal.

The deposit, known as the #Dobra #lithium field, in central #Ukraine, is one of the country’s largest reserves of lithium, a key component for technologies such as electric batteries. It will be developed under a production-sharing contract that allows investors to extract minerals in exchange for sharing output with the Ukrainian government.

Under the U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal, half of the revenue the Ukrainian government receives from the Dobra lithium field will be directed to the joint investment fund.

Trump ally who inspired Greenland purchase idea quietly invests in Greenlandic companies
    ▻https://www.arctictoday.com/trump-ally-who-inspired-greenland-purchase-idea-quietly-invests-in-gree

Ronald Lauder, the billionaire Estée Lauder heir who, according to former U.S. national security adviser John Bolton, first put the idea of “buying” #Greenland into Donald Trump’s mind, has quietly taken ownership stakes in Greenlandic companies. The revelations come from a major investigation by the Danish newspaper Politiken.

Lauder even offered to act as an intermediary with Denmark when Trump began exploring the idea; a notion that triggered a diplomatic rift in 2019 and later shaped Trump’s revived Arctic ambitions when he returned to office in 2025.

Now Politiken reports that Lauder, at age 81, has begun investing directly in Greenland.

According to Politiken, Lauder is a participant in Greenland Development Partners, a Delaware-registered investor consortium that has bought into Greenland Investment Group — a company with ambitions that stretch well beyond consumer products.

Greenland Investment Group has expressed interest in bidding for a major hydropower project at Lake Tasersiaq, Greenland’s largest lake. The project is envisioned as the energy source for a future aluminum smelter and, according to company projections, could markedly increase the island’s export revenues and boost the territory’s public finances.

The company is chaired by Josette Sheeran, the former U.S. deputy secretary of state under Condoleezza Rice and former head of the UN World Food Programme. Sheeran also leads the investor group’s Greenland portfolio more broadly.

Fonte significative sur le front du Groenland en ce mois de Juin 2024

There is a big melt event going on in #Greenland.
It’s been fairly extreme for the time of year the last few days.
Much of this melt will refreeze in the snowpack, but the snow buffer gets fuller every year as these kind of melt events are becoming more common.

The idea definitely sounds wild on the surface, but as it turns out, there are several very solid reasons for the endeavor. In fact, the United States already attempted this exact plan not too long ago.

The last whalers: commuting from the North Sea to Antarctica | Aeon Essays
    ▻https://aeon.co/essays/the-last-whalers-commuting-from-the-north-sea-to-antarctica

In the mid-20th century, young men from #Shetland would come of age and travel to Edinburgh. ‘Quite a lot of Shetland boys did that,’ says Gibbie Fraser, who was that boy some 60 years ago. ‘And I remember goin’ and dere was a lot of men dere and dey all seemed huge and in dose days dey all wore … dere dress clothes as almost a uniform.’ For many, this would have been their first trip to the mainland, their first trip to ‘Scotland’ proper at all, and the boys would watch the double-decker buses for the first time, or board a black cab for the neighbourhood of Leith. There, they would stand in lines that snaked around city blocks.Shetlanders are some of the only living people who participated in Antarctic whaling. #Whaling in the Southern Ocean followed the devastation of whale stocks in the North Sea around #Britain, #Iceland and #Norway in the late-19th and early 20th centuries. Whaling has been a foundation of Shetland’s economy for more than 300 years. It began with subsistence whaling, in the 18th and 19th centuries, and then developed into large-scale #Arctic and #Greenland hunts in the mid-19th century. Salvesen began whaling in Shetland at Olna in 1904, when the company established a whaling station. ‘That’s where [they], I suppose in a way, came to appreciate the Shetland men,’ said Fraser.

#Greenland will be far greater contributor to sea rise than expected | UCIrvine News
    ▻http://news.uci.edu/press-releases/greenland-will-be-far-greater-contributor-to-sea-rise-than-expected

    ▻http://news.uci.edu/wp-content/plugins/autothumb/image.php?src=http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2895/14189218861_1d94a2f08b_o.jpg&w=640&q=95&hash=ff8bd63e52d54ecae88d3dc5f05cd

Greenland’s icy reaches are far more vulnerable to warm ocean waters from climate change than had been thought, according to new research by UC Irvine and NASA glaciologists. The work, published today in Nature Geoscience, shows previously uncharted deep valleys stretching for dozens of miles under the Greenland Ice Sheet.

The bedrock canyons sit well below sea level, meaning that as subtropical Atlantic waters hit the fronts of hundreds of glaciers, those edges will erode much further than had been assumed and release far greater amounts of water.

Ice melt from the subcontinent has already accelerated as warmer marine currents have migrated north, but older models predicted that once higher ground was reached in a few years, the ocean-induced melting would halt. Greenland’s frozen mass would stop shrinking, and its effect on higher sea waters would be curtailed.

“That turns out to be incorrect. The glaciers of Greenland are likely to retreat faster and farther inland than anticipated – and for much longer – according to this very different topography we’ve discovered beneath the ice,” said lead author Mathieu Morlighem, a UC Irvine associate project scientist. “This has major implications, because the glacier melt will contribute much more to rising seas around the globe.”

To obtain the results, Morlighem developed a breakthrough method that for the first time offers a comprehensive view of Greenland’s entire periphery. It’s nearly impossible to accurately survey at ground level the subcontinent’s rugged, rocky subsurface, which descends as much as 3 miles beneath the thick ice cap.
