Do you want to feel really good this Christmas? #Boycott #Amazon | Technology | The Guardian

The firm’s overworked warehouse staff have had to pee in old water bottles while their CEO is paid in a second what they earn in five weeks.

Jeff Bezos, says the TUC, earns as much in a second as one of his warehouse workers would earn in five weeks. It makes his performative philanthropy – such as his Bezos Day One charity, which helps families in low-income areas – slightly nauseating. If he hadn’t set Amazon up to maximise his power and overvalue his contribution, he wouldn’t have helped to create the disempowerment and exploitation he claims to want to overcome.

Guardian accused of ‘vendetta’ for ignoring Chomsky’s Labour anti-Semitism comments — RT UK News
    ▻https://www.rt.com/uk/463581-guardian-criticized-chomsky-silence

    https://cdni.rt.com/files/2019.07/article/5d21e34dfc7e937f6e8b45a3.jpg

The Guardian is coming under fire for not reporting on renowned intellectual Noam Chomsky’s comments on Labour’s anti-Semitism row, with social media users accusing the outlet of hypocrisy.

Chomsky said that the allegations of anti-Semitism against party leader Jeremy Corbyn and MP Chris Williamson are a “disgrace” and an “insult to the memory” of Holocaust victims.

The Guardian has in the past reported on many of Chomsky’s comments, but has chosen to ignore his latest take on a current issue, leaving many wondering if it is conveniently selective about which of his comments it deems newsworthy.

Independent journalist Matt Kennard noted that RT, the Morning Star, and the Canary were the only news organizations to cover the esteemed intellectual’s remarks. “The mainstream media is running a campaign where contradictory information is just erased from record. The Guardian is at the forefront of this campaign,” he said.

Numerous people questioned the Guardian’s silence on the issue, with some accusing it of “censorship by omission” and having a “vendetta” against Chomsky and Corbyn. Kennard also noted that Chomsky’s previous comments on Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and the Palestinian Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement, were reported by the newspaper.

Social media users also asked why other media outlets like the BBC hadn’t covered Chomsky’s comments.

The Guardian publishes, then censors Jewish open letter defending smeared pro-Corbyn Labour MP Chris Williamson | The Grayzone
      ▻https://thegrayzone.com/2019/07/10/the-guardian-censors-chomsky-open-letter-corbyn-labour-mp-chris-william

      https://thegrayzone.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/The-Guardian-removed-article-Chris-Williamson-letter.png

The Guardian was quick to respond to the anti-Corbyn activists calling for the open letter to be censored. At the same time, the newspaper has refused to retract articles that have been proven to be false.

In November 2018, the Guardian published a piece claiming that former Donald Trump campaign director Paul Manafort had secretly met with WikiLeaks publisher and political prisoner Julian Assange in Ecuador’s London embassy three times.

WikiLeaks adamantly denied the report, calling it “entirely fabricated.” Manafort himself also said it was false, as did former Ecuadorian diplomats. WikiLeaks launched a legal fund to raise money to sue The Guardian for libel.

The Guardian’s editor-in-chief Katharine Viner has refused to comment on the allegedly fake story, co-authored by Luke Harding, and after over half a year there is still no evidence to support it.

“A simple retraction and apology will not be enough,” said WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson. “This persecution of Assange is one of the most serious attacks on journalism in recent times.”

    ▻https://blogs.mediapart.fr/jean-marc-b/blog/270717/l-argent-de-la-drogue-sauve-les-banques-pendant-la-crise-mondiale

    Source : Rajeev Syal, The #Guardian, 13-12-2009

Assange : How ’The Guardian’ Milked Edward Snowden’s Story
    ▻http://www.newsweek.com/assange-how-guardian-milked-edward-snowdens-story-323480

The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man (Guardian/Faber & Faber, 2014) by Luke Harding is a hack job in the purest sense of the term. Pieced together from secondary sources and written with minimal additional research to be the first to market, the book’s thrifty origins are hard to miss.

The #Guardian view on #Charlie_Hebdo : show solidarity, but in your own voice | Editorial | Comment is free | The Guardian
    ▻http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jan/08/guardian-view-charlie-hebdo-show-solidarity-own-voice

That case is straightforward. Since these are the images the gunmen wanted to stop, the surviving free press is obliged to deny the killers that victory. No other gesture can show that we refuse to be cowed by their crime. By repeating Charlie Hebdo’s action, we would demonstrate our resistance to the edict the terrorists sought to enforce on pain of death. We show that Charlie Hebdo was not alone.

There is an appealing simplicity to that stance, but it rests on faulty logic. The key point is this: support for a magazine’s inalienable right to make its own editorial judgments does not commit you to echo or amplify those judgments. Put another way, defending the right of someone to say whatever they like does not oblige you to repeat their words.

Large US tech firms plan ’go slow’ day in protest over net neutrality rules | Technology | theguardian.com
    ▻http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/04/etsy-mozilla-reddit-protest-net-neutrality

Some of the world’s largest tech firms are planning a “go slow” day next week in protest of proposals that could create fast lanes on the internet for some companies.

On 10 September, tech firms including Etsy, FourSquare, KickStarter, Mozilla, Reddit and Vimeo will install a widget on their sites to show how they believe the internet would look if the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) overturns “net neutrality” rules.

Evan Greer, co-founder of Fight for the Future, a pressure group helping to organise the protest day, said in an email: “Net neutrality is tough to explain to people, so we wanted to organize an action that actually shows the world what’s at stake. I think the three most hated words on the internet right now are ‘Please wait, loading ... ’ Unless internet users unite in defense of net neutrality, we could be seeing those dreaded ‘loading’ wheels a lot more often on some of our favorite websites, while monopolistic companies get to decide which content gets seen by the most people.”

Guardian publishes video of GCHQ harddrive destruction, and an amazingly racist quote from Edward Snowden
      ▻http://pando.com/2014/01/31/guardian-publishes-video-of-gchq-harddrive-destruction-and-an-amazingly-racis

[Snowden] said he was unimpressed by east London’s multiracial neighbourhoods, telling one British user of the forum: “It’s where all of your Muslims live. I didn’t want to get out of the car…”

(The quote continued: “I mean it wasn’t like, ‘Hi, we’re your friendly neighborhood Muslim community. welcome to our main street,” he wrote. “It was more like, ‘SUBMIT TO THE WILL OF ALLAH. SHARIAH REGULATIONS POSTED AT ALL CORNERS.’”)

This, remember, is the same Edward Snowden who, after fleeing to Hong Kong, described his disgust at the racism shown by members of the US armed forces. “Most of the people training us seemed pumped up about killing Arabs, not helping anyone,” he said.

I suppose those same Arabs can rest assured that, even had Snowden completed his special forces training, he would have been too scared to get out of his jeep to actually kill any of them.

The Guardian made this excellent commercial - Points Of View - in the early 80s or 90s.

At eight-thirty on the morning of June 21st, Alan Rusbridger, the unflappable editor of the Guardian, Britain’s liberal daily, was in his office, absorbing a lecture from Jeremy Heywood, the Cabinet Secretary to Prime Minister David Cameron. Accompanying Heywood was Craig Oliver, Cameron’s director of communications. The deputy editor, Paul Johnson, joined them in Rusbridger’s office, overlooking the Regent’s Canal, which runs behind King’s Cross station, in North London. According to Rusbridger, Heywood told him, in a steely voice, “The Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, the Attorney General, and others in government are extremely concerned about what you’re doing.”
