Will #blockchain Prevent Future Gun Violence? It’s Up To Us
▻https://hackernoon.com/will-blockchain-prevent-future-gun-violence-its-up-to-us-c3214197b4c1?so
In wake of the recent events in Parkland, Florida I feel compelled — not merely as a technologist, not even as an American, but as a human being — to speak up.Because, frankly, we can all agree that this isn’t just about “recent events.”Gun violence in America has consistently been a “recent event” for the past 10 years.Back in November — in the wake of the mass shooting at a church in Sutherland, Texas, which killed 26 and injured 20 — I wrote an article discussing how we might use blockchain to improve public safety. I gave some pie in the sky ideas about how this new technology could help us track weapons, purchases, and enforce regulations. And here I am again, after yet another mass shooting, writing about “how blockchain can be used to prevent gun violence.”As if a technology alone could ever curb (...)
Heal the Cracks in the Bell of the World
Martín Espada
For the community of Newtown, Connecticut,
where twenty students and six educators lost their
lives to a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary
School,
December 14, 2012
Now the bells speak with their tongues of bronze.
Now the bells open their mouths of bronze to say:
Listen to the bells a world away. Listen to the bell in the ruins
of a city where children gathered copper shells like beach glass,
and the copper boiled in the foundry, and the bell born
in the foundry says: I was born of bullets, but now I sing
of a world where bullets melt into bells. Listen to the bell
in a city where cannons from the armies of the Great War
sank into molten metal bubbling like a vat of chocolate,
and the many mouths that once spoke the tongue of smoke
form the one mouth of a bell that says: I was born of cannons,
but now I sing of a world where cannons melt into bells.
Listen to the bells in a town with a flagpole on Main Street,
a rooster weathervane keeping watch atop the Meeting House,
the congregation gathering to sing in times of great silence.
Here the bells rock their heads of bronze as if to say:
Melt the bullets into bells, melt the bullets into bells.
Here the bells raise their heavy heads as if to say:
Melt the cannons into bells, melt the cannons into bells.
Here the bells sing of a world where weapons crumble deep
in the earth, and no one remembers where they were buried.
Now the bells pass the word at midnight in the ancient language
of bronze, from bell to bell, like ships smuggling news of liberation
from island to island, the song rippling through the clouds.
Now the bells chime like the muscle beating in every chest,
heal the cracks in the bell of every face listening to the bells.
The chimes heal the cracks in the bell of the moon.
The chimes heal the cracks in the bell of the world.
“What Congress Has Accomplished Since the Sandy Hook Massacre” (5 years ago)

Here is a guide to what Congress has — or, more accurately, has not — accomplished during this time.
Comparing searches at the DNC and RNC
▻https://engineeringblog.yelp.com/2016/11/comparing-searches-at-the-dnc-and-rnc.html
Well, we should obviously look at the searches made at the relevant time and place: during each convention, in the area surrounding the corresponding cities (Cleveland for RNC, Philadelphia for DNC). Now, Yelp stores a lot of information on these searches, including which business category (restaurants, bars, home services, etc.) the search was for. Looking at these business categories for these searches seems like a natural thing to do.
But can we merely count the number of searches made in a category? Can we just say, “There were 120 searches for ‘Guns and Ammo’ during the DNC, and 116 during the RNC”?
# of searches during DNC # of searches during RNC
guns_and_ammo 120 116
Of course not. The conventions were held in two different cities, with different populations and levels of Yelp usage. One convention may simply have had more searches due to these factors.

Guns-to-Caviar Index : Crisis of Disaster Capitalism
▻http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/31/547976/-
tracks the sales of fighter jets (guns) and executive jets (caviar). For seventeen years, it consistently found that when fighter jets were selling briskly, sales of luxury executive jets went down and vice versa; when executive jets sales were on the rise, fighter jet sales dipped. Of course, a handful of war profiteers always managed to get rich from selling guns, but they were economically insignificant. it was a truism of the contemporary market that you couldn’t have booming growth in the midst of violence and instability.
But that truism is no longer true. Since 2003, the year of the Iraq invasion, the index found that spending has been going up on both fighter jets and executive jets rapidly and simultaneously, which means that the world is becoming less peaceful while accumulating significantly more profit.

French Jets Allegedly Bombed a School in Mosul, Killing 28 Children [Article is in Arabic] : islam
▻https://www.reddit.com/r/islam/comments/3u7gom/french_jets_allegedly_bombed_a_school_in_mosul
Mosul (DPA): An Iraqi military source in Nineveh province announced on Wednesday the death of 28 pupils when French aircrafts bombed a primary school in east Mosul, 400km north of Baghdad.
Brigadier Thanon al-Sabawi from the the second division of the Iraqi army said that “French jets bombed today Fatima Zahra primary school in the area of Azzuhur in east Mosul, resulting in the death of 28 pupils and injuring 5 others.”
They claim their source is DPA (the German Press Agency), but I could find nothing on this from any decent Arabic news websites except RT Arabic. Also nothing from any legit German, French or English news sources. Most likely BS.
Edit: According to Shafaq News (Arabic), this story is entirely false. Locals and journalists from the area have denied that airstrikes have hit Azzuhur, and say there is no school by the name of Fatima Zahra in this district. The picture seen in Arabic news articles about this is from a suicide bomb attack that happened in Sinjar two years ago.
“I’m pretty sure the BBC would report if French jets accidentally killed 28 children”
“Google is not a good source to verify news. This is because news agencies report based on what is in the best interest of their nations.
For example, you will notice that the Al-Jazeera news networks in English report differently (including different word usage) than the ones in Arabic, due to different demographics.
If you want to find out news like this, it has to be from a news agency who’s HQ is based in a nation that benefits from reporting it (which will likely not be any of the English ones since NATO supports the attacks).
In addition, most news agencies can’t pull news themselves, they rely on some of the few companies who have reporters everywhere (such as Reuters) or from local sources (which aren’t available so easily on google, and pretty much never in English).”
“This story has been around for at least 11 hours. Other media outlets would have picked it up by now if it was legit. RT Arabic is literally the only major Arabic news website that’s reported it. Not even their English-language news site is reporting it.”

More Than Half of Americans Now Have Tougher Gun Laws | Mother Jones

An unthinkable massacre ignites an intense national debate. Then, Congress does nothing. The powerful gun lobby wins again. End of story.
So went the popular narrative last spring with the collapse of gun control legislation on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, scores of people have been wounded or killed in five new mass shootings and other gun rampages around the country, and an estimated 30,000 have been killed by firearms—including hundreds of young children, as documented in our latest investigation.
