Credits: Unsplash/Joshua AragonRecently, I was at the Boryspil Airport, Ukraine, working on a blog article when suddenly my VSCode stops working. It actually got crashed! Not once, but twice under 30 minutes. Some of the content was autosaved, some of it was gone forever…I was frustrated at first as to why it had to crash at that moment! Next, after re-opening the editor, I was angry with myself for I had to write some of the stuff again that didn’t get saved. Also, at times, previous this experience, it did feel that I have bloat of extensions that I am not using since I have stopped working with some of the frameworks in recent months (example, Angular). What did I do? After none of the emotions helped, I had to find a way to cope better. On a network that was not so crappy, but did have (...)

The internet as we know it is broken. Google and Facebook have created data silos in which we have lost control over our information. You’ve heard that story a dozen times. But according to the people working on Web 3.0 they are able to fix all of that.Web 3.0 was proposed as the next evolutionary stage the internet might enter. In the early 90ies the first internet browser marks the beginning of the world wide web. Back then people were only able to access static websites without any interactive content — pretty boring from today’s perspective. However, people would often self host the data they are sharing and thus have more control about what they share with whom. The downside was that this made publishing content on the internet only accessible to those who possessed the right (...)

The future of software development: freelance, AI-assisted, and ricketyNearly four thousand years elapsed between when Egyptian astronomers invented the concept of zero and a British mathematician tacked together the first computer. But once the thing was made, we were off to the races. It was only 130 more years to electronic computers, 40 to the internet, and only nine to smartphones. Now advances in computer science pop off as if discharged from a ticker tape machine. But not everything that earns press sees success — or has an impact. Most inventions die following their hype cycle, in what research firm Gartner calls the trough of disillusionment. Spotify paid $340M to acquire content studio Gimlet and hosting platform Anchor in February, and last month purchased true crime content studio Parcast for an estimated $100M. A press release shortly after the first two acquisitions announced Spotify had “line-of-sight on total spend of $400-$500M in multiple acquisitions” for 2019, with planned further spend if the strategy paid off. This acquisition activity is especially notable in a space with few prior exits — iHeartMedia’s acquisition of Stuff Media (creators of How Stuff Works) for $55M was the largest previous exit. Become a better programmer by building a routine and habit for reading codeThis is a post in my occasional series, Notes to a Young Software Engineer. Sign up here.A code snippet from RedisIf you woke up one day resolved to be a great writer, you’d hear two simple pieces of feedback: write a lot, and read even more. In software, plenty of people write code, but precious few spend time reading it — especially code outside their day to day work. That is a mistake. Early in your career, act like an aspiring writer and embrace reading diverse code.Read widely and read often. It could be the difference between being a decent software engineer and a great one. Why should I read code?Great writers are a function of the writers they’ve read. Human production is in the midst of a sea-change. The growth in global connectivity, coupled with advancements in automation is giving rise to a new economy, the sharing economy.Sharing #economics is not a new phenomena. In fact, the modern sharing economies catalyzed by #uber and Lyft, often touted as innovative, are a derivation of the most primitive economic structure: trade and barter. The Uber and Lyft S-1s have shed light on the vulnerabilities in the economics that underpin their business model. This has brought about discussion with respect to the long-term viability of these businesses, and at a cursory evaluation of the financials, it makes sense that people would draw that conclusion. The problem with that analysis, however, is that it takes a nearsighted view of a long term (...)
