    http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=715748

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Unceasing Israeli attacks on Gaza left 73 Palestinians dead on Wednesday, bringing the death toll since the beginning of Israel’s offensive on the Strip to 695.

A Palestinian health ministry spokesman said that 13 people had been killed since sundown, when Palestinians across Gaza broke their Ramadan fast for the day.

Thirty-one of Wednesday’s dead were killed in the southern Khan Younis area, Ashraf al-Qidra said.

After intense Israeli strikes on the Khazaa and al-Fakhari neighborhoods overnight and early Wednesday, medics told Ma’an they spent the day pulling bodies from the rubble and searching for injured.

However, they said their work was impeded as Israeli forces prevented them from entering the area several times. Ambulances have still not reached some of those injured or killed by strikes on Khuzaa, the medics said.

The Gaza-based Palestinian Center for Human rights estimated on Wednesday that 81.5 percent of those killed in the Israeli offensive were civilians.

Yesterday, Wednesday 9 July 2014, after I ate the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast and prayed the a-Tarawih [Ramadan] prayer, I went to the Waqt al-Marah caf? [a.ka. Fun Time Beach] to watch the soccer World Cup semi-final between Holland and Argentina. The caf?, owned by the a-Sawali family, is constructed of palm fronds. It’s on the Khan Yunis beach, in the al-’Izbeh area, about 30 meters from the water and 200 meters from the first line of houses. There were about 13 people at the caf?, all men. We knew that Israeli airplanes were bombing several places in the Gaza Strip at the time, but we thought that the caf? was safe.

Security officers in Saudi Arabia have arrested nearly 2,200 illegal foreign workers in Madinah and Hail and Baha this month for allegedly violating the country’s residency and labor regulations.

Madinah police arrested 884 Asian and African illegals during Ramadan following numerous inspection raids carried out at firms and establishments in the city.

Police in Madinah launched a crackdown on violators in cooperation with the Criminal Investigations Department, Special Task Force and Traffic Department, an official statement said, adding that the campaign is being supervised by Maj. Gen. Abdulhadi Al-Shahrani, Madinah region police director.

Security agencies in Hail, meanwhile, have arrested 305 violators during the last three days, said Col. Abdul Aziz Al-Zenaidi, Hail police spokesman.

“We have handed over the violators to authorities for punitive action,” he said. “We will continue our efforts to arrest labor law violators and residents without IDs throughout the region,” Al-Zenaidi said. In Baha, police have arrested more than 1,000 illegals.

In the meantime, Riyadh Municipality officials closed 23 restaurants in the capital for violating health regulations. They prevented 101 employees from working for not possessing health certificates and fulfilling hygienic conditions.

  • A toned down Ramadan
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/photoblogs/toned-down-ramadan

Ramadan does not feel as festive this year compared to years past. People have not prepared for the holy month like they usually do. The atmosphere of Ramadan is being drowned out by the tense security situation in Lebanon and the current regional events. There are even people who do not have the means to put food on the table after 16 hours of fasting.

  • Grenade thrown in Lebanon café hurts four
    http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=66888

A grenade thrown into a cafe hurt four people on Wednesday in Lebanon’s often-restive northern city of Tripoli, security officials said.

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear, but there were suspicions the cafe was targeted for opening its doors during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

“Four people, including two Syrian nationals, were injured when unknown assailants threw a grenade into a cafe in the Bab el-Tebbaneh district” in Tripoli, a security official said.

The assailants approached the cafe on a motorbike and tossed the device in before escaping.

The official pointed out that “the cafe sells coffee during the day in Ramadan, when most residents are fasting,” without stating definitely whether that was why the establishment was targeted.

Three hand grenades rocked the northern city of Tripoli early Thursday, in the latest breach of a three-month-old security plan that ended deadly clashes linked to the Syrian crisis.

Security sources told The Daily Star an unknown assailant tossed a grenade on a café that belongs to Bassam Jamd in the Tripoli neighborhood of Qibbeh.

There were no casualties from the 4:30 a.m. attack, the source added.

Wednesday, four café-goers were wounded in a similar attack on Abdul-Hamid Karami Street in Tabbaneh.

Authorities believe the café assaults were a message to both coffee shop owners and café-goers for opening during fasting hours in Ramadan.

An hour before the attack in Qibbeh, another grenade targeted a cemetery in Bab al-Raml, causing material damage only.

    • STATEMENT FROM THE REFUGEES ON THE ROOF OF THE FORMER GERHARDT HAUPTMAN SCHULE

We are now on the roof since six days. The last days have been very hard and exhausting to us, not only because of being on the roof, but more because we are facing harrassment by the police again and again.

During the night of 27/28 June police was shaking the door and made different statements so we could not get a rest. Deprivation of sleep is only one of the methods through which they were trying to break our resistance. As Ramadan has begun, many of us must fast. The lack of sleep due to the police and demands of fasting make the situation more
      precarious.
During the day the police insulted as in racist ways. They were watching us from another roof and waving, not only with handcuffs, but also with bananas.

We continue to fight for freedom of the press. We still demand that the press be allowed inside!

      On Yesterday’s ‘Offer’

So far the district has promised that they will not evict and the police wrote on twitter that they will not evict without the Bezirk.

We look favorably upon the fact that the school will become an international refugee center, which had already been promised, and also that we will be allowed to stay in the building during the construction work. But there were other people, who didn’t leave the
school voluntarily. Those people are not included; some of them are living in the streets because there was no more space for them in the promised places, some of them didn’t want to move there.
We are frustrated about the methods of the senate and outraged by Kolat’s lies. We fight as a movement and expect that everyone encompassed by the agreement with Kolat will get positive answers.

Since the beginning we put emphasis on our demand for residency, the right to stay (!) and that the school was not our main aim. We are aware that the district is not able to fulfill this demand, but at least they could make some pressure and actively support the political
demand. If there will really be an international refugee center, what will be the use if the people there get deported? If only the people who are in the building/on the roof now can stay, lager-like structures would be implemented (controls, who enters etc.)

There was big solidarity at Saturday’s demonstration, there were many people there and in the blockades.

It is time to change the Asylum politics!
It is time for a real answer to our Demands.
The right to residency, the right to stay!
These are our rights and we are still prepared to die for them!
      We need an answer!

  • The Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre: 20 Years Later
    http://imeu.net/news/article0024911.shtml

    THE #MASSACRE

Early on the morning of February 25, 1994, #Goldstein, wearing his army uniform and carrying his army-issued assault rifle, walked past Israeli soldiers manning a checkpoint and into the Ibrahimi Mosque. It was the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims and there were 400 or 500 Palestinian men worshipping. According to reports, once inside, Goldstein observed the scene and waited until those present turned towards Mecca and knelt to pray before opening fire.

Twenty-nine Palestinians were killed and some 150 wounded before Goldstein’s victims subdued and beat him to death. According to a report in The New York Times, at least one Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers stationed outside the mosque as panicked survivors attempted to flee to safety and others may have died as a result of being repeatedly stopped en route to hospital by soldiers wanting to search the vehicles they were being transported in.

In the civil unrest that erupted across the occupied territories, Israeli soldiers killed more than 20 Palestinians and wounded hundreds of others.

As is often the case with gun massacres in the US and elsewhere, many eyewitnesses reported seeing more than one gunman, however no conclusive evidence has come to light proving there was more than one killer.

    REPERCUSSIONS

The massacre provoked international outrage and condemnation. The UN Security Council passed Resolution 904 without a vote, calling for “measures to be taken to guarantee the safety and protection of the Palestinian civilians throughout the occupied territory.” Resolution 904 resulted in the creation of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH), which was supposed to protect the Palestinian population. However, Israel has only allowed TIPH to act as observers, leaving Palestinians in Hebron at the mercy of settlers and the soldiers assigned to protect them.

In response to the international outcry, the Israeli government created a commission of inquiry that found Goldstein had acted alone, absolving Israel of any responsibility. It also outlawed Kach and its offshoot movements, as did the US government.

Instead of taking advantage of the situation to evacuate the relatively small number of settlers from Hebron, thereby reducing tensions and demonstrating goodwill, Rabin’s government temporarily disarmed a few of the most extreme before rewarding them, including increasing their access to the mosque. At the same time, Israel clamped down on Palestinian residents of Hebron with severe restrictions on their movements and other measures. Israeli measures taken in Hebron following the massacre include:

A round-the-clock curfew was imposed on Palestinian residents.

Israel forcibly divided the Ibrahimi Mosque to create a separate prayer space for Jews with a separate entrance. In addition, the mosque would be opened exclusively for Jews 10 days a year, and Muslims 10 days a year.

Palestinian shopkeepers on Shuhada Street in the heart of Hebron were forced to close their businesses, which were welded shut by the Israeli army, under the pretext of securing settlers living on the busy commercial artery.

Palestinians were restricted, at first from driving and later from walking as well, on a large section of Shuhada Street, prompting its nickname of “Apartheid Street.” The US government spent millions of dollars through USAID renovating Shuhada Street prior to its segregation, most of which is now reserved for the exclusive use of Jewish settlers.

Numerous new Israeli military checkpoints and obstacles to movement were put in place making it difficult for Palestinians to move around the city, including children who must pass through checkpoints to get to school.

Except for the curfew, twenty years later all of these measures remain in place. According to a November 2013 UN fact sheet:

There are over 120 obstacles to Palestinian movement designed to segregate “restricted areas” (settlements and surrounding areas) from the rest of the city, including 18 permanently manned military checkpoints.

Several streets in the center of downtown Hebron that lead to the settlements are prohibited for Palestinian traffic and some also for pedestrian movement.

512 Palestinian businesses in the restricted areas have been closed by the Israeli military and at least 1100 others have closed due to restricted access for customers and suppliers.

More than 1000 Palestinian homes located in the restricted areas, over 40% of the area’s residences, have been abandoned, according to a survey by B’Tselem and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.

    The fact sheet also noted:

Access restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities in H2 [the 20% of Hebron under direct and total Israeli control], compounded by systematic harassment by Israeli settlers and, occasionally, by Israeli forces, have resulted in the displacement of thousands of Palestinians and the deterioration of the living conditions of those who stayed.

Palestinians living in the restricted areas face serious challenges in accessing basic services, including schools, emergency health services and water and sanitation.

The Israeli authorities justify the restrictions imposed on the Palestinian population as a means to protect the Israeli settlers residing in the city, as well as other Israeli visitors, and to allow settlers to lead a normal life. However, as with all other Israeli settlements, the settlements in the heart of Hebron City are illegal under international humanitarian law.

There are serious gaps in the enforcement of the rule of law on Israeli settlers involved in violence and intimidation against Palestinians. Incidents include acts of vandalism, property damage, physical attacks, verbal abuse, and the harassment of children on their way to school. The large majority of complaints about settler attacks filed in recent years have been closed by the Israeli Police without indictment.
