L’incident pourrait encore compliquer la résolution du problème chypriote. Chypre a estimé, dimanche 11 février, que la Turquie, qui occupe la partie nord de l’île, avait violé « le droit international » en bloquant un navire italien parti explorer du gaz dans les eaux de l’île méditerranéenne.

Le grand groupe italien de l’énergie ENI a indiqué à l’agence de presse chypriote que des navires de la marine turque avaient donné l’ordre à l’un de ses bateaux de s’arrêter en raison « d’activités militaires » dans ce secteur. Il faisait route vers le bloc 3 de la Zone économique exclusive (ZEE) de Chypre, à l’est de l’île divisée, en vue de commencer l’exploration de cette zone.

Chypre, qui a lancé des opérations de forage il y a plus de sept ans au large de ses côtes, a annoncé jeudi la découverte d’importantes réserves de gaz au bloc 6, au sud-ouest du bloc 3, par le groupe ENI et le français Total. L’an dernier, ExxonMobil et Qatar Petroleum ont signé un contrat de licence avec Nicosie pour explorer le bloc 10, situé près du champ gazier égyptien « Zohr », où d’immenses réserves de gaz ont été découvertes.

Ukraine’s government received a “Notice of Withdrawal” to abandon a potential $10 billion gas exploration project from Royal Dutch Shell, the Financial Times reported citing “sources familiar with the situation.”

Citing “circumstances beyond” the company’s control, a shell spokesman told the Kyiv Post in an e-mailed statement that it has “been prevented from performing its commitments under (the) Yuzivska production sharing agreement” in war-torn eastern Ukraine.

the minister listed six justifications for importing natural gas from the natural gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean, including curbing NEPCO’s losses and securing more than one source of gas. “Importing liquefied natural gas will enhance the Kingdom’s energy security.”

The withdrawal of British Petroleum from the concession agreement of gas exploration in the Risheh field, the low cost of natural gas-fired electricity generation and the impossibility to replace natural gas with renewable energy and oil shale to generate electricity are the other reasons Hamed cited.

France’s Total wins Egypt gas exploration license - Reuters

French oil company Total has been awarded a licence to explore for natural gas in the Nile Delta, a source in the state-run Egyptian Natural Gas Holding company (EGAS) said on Monday.
“France’s Total won the bid to explore in Sector 2 in the Delta region,” the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
In December, Egypt’s General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) announced an international auction for oil and gas exploration concessions in accordance with production sharing agreements.
The concessions are for areas in the Suez Canal, Egypt’s western desert, the Mediterranean sea and the Nile Delta.
In addition to Total, Dana Gas, BP, Eni, Petroceltic and Edison have won concessions in the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile Delta.
Germany’s RWE has won two exploration blocks in the Gulf of Suez, while Tunisia’s HBSI, Canada’s TransGlobe and Italy’s Edison secured five blocks in Egypt’s western desert.
Egypt has been struggling with soaring energy bills caused by the high subsidies it provides on fuel for its population of 85 million. The subsidies have turned the country from a net energy exporter into a net importer over the last few years.
Egypt has started repaying some of its debt to foreign oil companies, which had reached more than $6 billion.
