HEBRON (Ma’an) — A 16-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed and at least one other Palestinian teen was injured, after Israeli forces opened fire at a group of Palestinian youth in al-Arrub refugee camp in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron on Friday evening.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that 16-year-old Murad Yusif Abu Ghazi died after succumbing to a gunshot wound in his chest, after he was evacuated to the intensive care unit at Hebron’s Al-Ahli Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital told Ma’an that another Palestinian, identified as 17-year-old Saif Salim Rushdi, was brought to the ICU after he was also shot by Israeli forces in the camp.

The details behind the shooting remained unclear. However, Israeli media sites reported that Israeli forces had opened fire at a group of Palestinian youths, after the teens allegedly attempted the throw Molotov cocktails at soldiers.

  • Israel still outraged by new ’softened’ version of UNESCO resolution
    http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?ID=773732
    Oct. 26, 2016 5:08 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 26, 2016 5:08 P.M.)

BETHLEHEM — A new version of a UNESCO resolution that strongly condemned Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinians territory was approved on Wednesday after widespread uproar from Israel and its supporters claimed that the previous text denied Jewish ties to the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem’s Old City.

The resolution was backed by ten World Heritage Committee members states, opposed by two, with eight abstaining.

However, Israeli media sites reported that the revised version continued to “ignore Judaism’s connection” to the holy site, as the text still only referred to the compound by its Arabic and Muslim names — Al-Aqsa or al-Haram al-Sharif — and not as the Temple Mount as it is known to Jews.

Amid the uproar, the issues raised in the resolution itself regarding several Israeli policies against Palestinians at the holy site have largely fallen to the wayside.

As a Palestinian representative to UNESCO put it after the initial text was approved, the resolution was “about occupation, not about a name,” asserting that the Geneva Conventions required the site be referred to by the name that predated Israel’s illegal occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967.

The wording of the new resolution was “softened,” according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, removing the term “occupying” force in regards to Israel, and now refers to the Western Wall by its Jewish name and not in quotations as it had been previously.

However, Israel’s ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen, reportedly said after the vote: “This is yet another absurd resolution against the State of Israel, the Jewish people and historical truth.”

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also slammed the new resolution, saying, “UNESCO embarrassed itself by marching to the tune of the Palestinian pipers. All attempts to deny our heritage, distort history and disconnect the Jewish people from our capital and our homeland, are doomed to fail.”

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — A 28-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces Friday night after stabbing and wounding a 20-year-old Israeli soldier at the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem in the central occupied West Bank.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement that the Palestinian suspect entered the cars-dedicated lane at the checkpoint on foot, where he attacked an Israeli soldier with a knife, before other soldiers opened fire on the man, killing him on the scene.

Al-Samri said the soldier was taken to the hospital in a moderate-to-serious condition. He was later reported to be in a stable condition.

She added that the 28-year-old Palestinian was from the nearby village of Kafr Aqab in the Jerusalem district of the occupied West Bank.

He was later identified on Palestinian media sites as Naseem Abu Meizar.
Following the incident, Israeli forces closed Qalandiya checkpoint, where clashes erupted, with protesting Palestinians reportedly throwing stones at Israeli forces who responded by firing stun grenades and tear gas canisters at the crowds.

In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed on 30 September 2016, Nasib Abu Maizer (28), from Kufor Aqeb village, north of occupied Jerusalem. The aforementioned person was killed when Israeli forces stationed at Qalandya military checkpoint, north of the city, opened fire at him, due to which he sustained 5 bullet wounds throughout his body. He was left bleeding for over an hour as the Israeli forces denied medical crews from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) access to the scene until he died. Israel forces then kept his corpse. They claimed that Abu Maizer had stabbed a soldier and caused him moderate wounds.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot dead after stabbing and wounding two Israeli border police officers outside Damascus Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday morning, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the border police officers opened fire on the 20-year-old Palestinian after he drew a knife on them.

Rosenfeld said the Palestinian was killed, while both officers were lightly wounded and evacuated to hospital.

Israeli media sites published a photograph purportedly showing the Palestinian’s ID, which identified him as 20-year-old Muhammad Abu Khalaf from the town of Kufr Aqab in northern East Jerusalem.

Rosenfeld said the area was closed off and there was “heightened security in the area.”

Damascus Gate has been the site of a number of deadly encounters between Palestinians and Israelis since a wave of unrest swept the occupied Palestinian territory in October last year.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot two Palestinian teenage girls, killing one and wounding the other, after they were allegedly involved in a stabbing attack near a central Jerusalem market on Monday morning, Israeli police said.

The incident took place near the Mahane Yehuda market on Jaffa Street, with Israeli media initially reporting that two Israelis were wounded in the alleged attack.

However, a spokesperson for Hadassah hospital later confirmed that one of those injured was a 70-year-old Palestinian resident of Bethlehem, who had a light stabbing wound in his back, and the other was a 27-year-old Israeli security guard who was shot in the hand, possibly by friendly fire.

The Palestinian girls were 16 and 14 years old, Israeli police said. One of them died soon after the incident, while the other was taken to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem.

A hospital spokesperson said that she had been taken into the operating room in serious condition, with two bullet wounds in her stomach. The spokesperson was unable to confirm the girl’s age, as she was taken to the hospital without any identification.

The girls were reported by Israeli media as having used scissors to carry out the alleged attack.

Israeli media initially reported that two Israelis were wounded in the alleged attack, although a spokesperson for Hadassah hospital later confirmed that one of those injured was a 70-year-old Palestinian resident of Bethlehem, who had a light stabbing wound in his back.
The other was a 27-year-old Israeli security guard who was shot in the hand by friendly fire.
An Israeli security guard, who had been driving near the Mahane Yehuda market on Jaffa Street, got out of his car when he saw the two girls and quickly shot dead 16-year-old Hadeel Wajih Awwad and severely wounded her cousin, 14-year-old Norhan Awwad .
Video footage showed both girls running at the security officer, apparently waving scissors, before the security guard and another Israeli managed to knock the girls to the ground.
Once on the ground, the security guard ran forward and shot each of them several times.
The video footage did not show the preceding circumstances in which the 70-year-old Palestinian was injured.
Hadeel Awwad died almost immediately, while her cousin was evacuated to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem, where a spokesperson said that she had been taken into the operating room in serious condition, with two bullet wounds in her stomach.
Hadeel came from Qalandiya refugee camp. Her brother, Mahmoud Awwad, reportedly died in 2013, several months after he was shot and injured during clashes with Israeli troops inside the refugee camp.

We Interviewed to Be a Tank Driver for the Separatists in Ukraine | Vocativ
    https://www.vocativ.com/world/ukraine-world/interviewed-tank-operator-job-ukraine

As we wrote about earlier, separatists in Ukraine have finally gotten their hands on some tanks, but there’s a hitch: They don’t have anyone to operate them. To solve that problem, the Ukrainian militia groups have taken out an ad on several media sites requesting drivers, gunners and mechanics, and even listing a number to call for more details.

Je n’ai pas trouvé le tweet en anglais, mais en russe, oui.

La suite de l’entretien (en russe)…

    Vocativ: “And what’s the pay?”
DNR: “This is not for money! Do you want to come here to make money?”

Vocativ: “OK. How long should I be there?”
    DNR: “Until we win.”

Vocativ: “And who’s already there? Russians, Ukrainians?”
DNR: “I don’t know every person. There are Russians and Ukrainians.”

“I don’t like your stupid questions,” she said before hanging up. “Everybody who should be here is already here.”

Most news sites have low pageviews per visit and low time on site. Low, at least, compared to media sites whose content is more Internet-native. You know how, on Wikipedia or YouTube, you start off reading one article or watching one video, then end up clicking on another, then another, then another — and next thing you know it’s an hour later and you’ve forgotten what you were looking for in the first place? That feeling of being lost in a site, of swimming through content — you don’t generally get that from a news site.
