Exploring museum collections online: Some background reading

In 2017 the Science Museum Group relaunched its online collection website. The website consolidated a number of existing websites publishing digitised collection material — organised by subject or area of collection — into a single presence.

Over 282,000 objects and archival records were published and over 27,000 of these were illustrated with at least one image.

This represents about 6% of the object collection (estimated to total 406,000 objects) and only a tiny fraction of the archival collection (estimated to be around 7 million items).

On February 7, 2017, The Metropolitan Museum of Art implemented a new policy known as Open Access, which makes images of artworks it believes to be in the public domain widely and freely available for unrestricted use, and at no cost, in accordance with the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) designation and the Terms and Conditions of this website.

It also makes available data from the entire online collection―both works it believes to be in the public domain and those under copyright or other restrictions―including basic information such as title, artist, date, medium, and dimensions. This data is available to all in accordance with the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) designation.

That’s about 375k images, many beautiful (I think in total CC0 and ©, but still…).

Art historians have debated the limits and bias of style analysis and classification for decades.[2] Despite that, the style remains “inseparable from working concepts of art and its history”[3], while its relevance is now being reaffirmed in an unsuspected way—as a database column in an ever-growing number of art collections. Major art museums adopted it as an organising element of their online catalogues.[4]

Museums present their online databases as neutral resources which often lack acknowledgment of editorial work and instead derive their legitimacy from the reputation of the institution.[5] While they increasingly influence how we (and machines) look at and learn about art, their protocols are rarely discussed. In contrast to the tradition of scholarly argumentation, the context in the database is given by the way its data are interconnected, where each item is defined by the set of its relations to other items. Rather than notions supporting the argument, styles and movements are vectors along which an online collection is designed to be viewed, queried, and referred to. This enables databases to position artworks as belonging to particular styles and movements by the mere designation of a relation.[6] Even though art collections databases are heir to the art-historical tradition, they adjust art to the logic of the relational database—the logic of organising data into rows and columns containing items pointing at one another. The same holds for other attributes of artworks, pre-formatted by the database as lists of authors, materials, years of production, and so on.

The collection consists of jazz photographs taken by writer-photographer William P. Gottlieb, from 1938 to 1948, the “Golden Age of Jazz” when swing reached its peak and modern jazz developed. While on assignment for the Washington Post, Down Beat magazine, and Record Changer, Gottlieb photographed and interviewed #jazz pioneers primarily in Washington, D.C., and New York City. A skilled craftsman, the self-taught photographer captured the personalities of jazz musicians in a sensitive, storytelling manner. The collection is an important contribution to the documentation of American culture during a time when jazz music thrived.

Gottlieb’s photographs are perhaps the most widely reproduced images of jazz musicians, such as #Louis_Armstrong, #Duke_Ellington, #Charlie_Parker, #Billie_Holiday, #Dizzy_Gillespie, #Earl_Hines, #Thelonious_Monk, #Stan_Kenton, #Ray_McKinley, #Benny_Goodman, #Coleman_Hawkins, #Ella_Fitzgerald, and #Benny_Carter.

The online collection provides access to digital images of all sixteen hundred negatives and transparencies, approximately one hundred annotated contact prints, and over two hundred selected photographic prints that show Gottlieb’s cropping, burning, and dodging preferences. One can follow the artist’s work process by examining first a raw negative, then an annotated contact print, and finally a finished, published product.

Théophile Steinlen’s poster for Le Chat Noir, Leonetto Cappiello’s advertisement for Café Martin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s portraits of the cabaret singer Aristide Bruant — through these and other much-reproduced and often-seen images, we’ve all gained some familiarity, however unconscious, with the art of the fin de siècle French print.

But even so, most of us have seen only a small fraction of all the striking works of art a late-nineteenth-century Parisian would have encountered on the streetscape every day. Until they invent a time machine to drop us straight into the cultural vibrancy of that time and place, we’ve got the next best thing in the form of the Van Gogh Museum’s online French print collection.

The online collection offers not just high-resolution images of nearly 1800 prints, posters, and books from this movement, but information that “reveals and elaborates on innumerable artistic and historical connections using interactive tags and hyperlinks,” shedding light on the “tightly knit community” of the Parisian print world, whose “each individual print is connected with countless other prints in many different ways,” from shared influences to subjects to artistic techniques to types of paper — and even to clients, who quickly realized the commercial value of all the eye-catching qualities pioneered in this revolution in reproducible visual art.
