The photojournalists who documented the suffering of these refugees began their projects along traditional lines. Some of them, from the Times and from Reuters, won Pulitzer Prizes for images explicitly showing the dangers and humiliations people have endured in their search for a better life in Europe. As the crisis continued last year, the Belgian photographer Tomas van Houtryve embarked on a different kind of project. Supported by a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, he followed the “digital breadcrumbs” left by refugees on social media as they passed through Turkey, Greece, and France. Van Houtryve, who has covered wars in Nepal and Afghanistan as a traditional photojournalist, became interested in the ways in which digital technology affects photography when, in 2013, he began working on a series of photographs of the United States taken from drones. For his current project, which he has called “Traces of Exile,” he shot video footage of sites along the migrant trail in Europe. Then, using an augmented-reality app called Layar, he overlaid his footage with screenshots of images posted by refugees on Instagram from those same sites.

The military regime continues to create deeper digital confusion. It refuses to jettison its campaign for a single internet gateway that would out-firewall the “great firewall of China”. Now it seeks official authorisation to legally and secretly intercept all internet traffic. This amendment to the military’s poorly conceived Computer Crime Act (CCA) is sailing through the appointed National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

The revelation about this bill is a huge disappointment, and not just to those who are intensely focused on civil rights. The proposed changes to the CCA are important on several levels: they will authorise any state security agency to gather details like the login and password of every citizen who does online banking. It will allow them to intercept the business dealings of every company with an online presence, even their in-house emails.

The planned amendments, slated to become law next month, do not stop there. They specifically require ISPs to allow the state security apparatus full access to the internet traffic of their clients. Further, the ISPs will be gagged, with heavy penalties for any who blow the whistle on the state’s prying. Even if an ISP knows that state officials are intercepting highly personal details, such as online ATM transactions or business secrets, they are forbidden from revealing this rights abuse.

Incitements to murder on some television channels affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, a growing number of supporters renouncing pacifism, and an increasing online presence of groups seeking retribution for the killing of “revolutionaries;” all this has raised the question of the Muslim Brotherhood and violence, not only regarding the origin of violence, but also the Islamist organization’s relationship with the other militant groups and how to deal with it.

There are two predominant perspectives: The first has been adopted by the official discourse, its close circles and media mouthpieces, claiming that the Muslim Brotherhood is a violent group by definition, and that their formerly latent violence has now surfaced. Advocates of this view blame revolutionary forces for once cooperating with the Brotherhood, as this has allegedly supported the network and arming of the organization. The second view is the discourse prevalent in academic circles affiliated and sympathizing with the Brotherhood, which insist that it is impossible for organization to resort to violence, and that violent events are isolated incidents or a conspiracy by the regime to portray the Brotherhood as violent to justify their ongoing killing and detention. Both views share the same essential perception of the Brotherhood as an invariable self, unaffected by ideological and social changes.
