    • Exclusive: Khashoggi sons issue emotional appeal for the return of their father’s body
      By Nic Robertson, CNN

      Updated 0004 GMT (0804 HKT) November 5, 2018

      (...) Khashoggi was labeled as a Muslim Brotherhood sympathizer and a dangerous Islamist in phone calls the Saudi crown prince had with Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and Middle East adviser, and John Bolton, national security adviser, according to reports in both the Washington Post and New York Times. The Muslim Brotherhood, considered a terror group in many Arab nations, but not the US or Europe, has long been seen as an existential threat by the desert kingdom’s leaders.
      “It’s just labels and people not doing their homework properly, and reading his article and going in depth. It’s easier to stick a label on him,” Abdullah said, when asked about the Muslim Brotherhood claim.
      Asked how Khashoggi should be remembered, Salah replied, “as a moderate man who has common values with everyone... a man who loved his country, who believed so much in it and its potential.”
      "Jamal was never a dissident. He believed in the monarchy that it is the thing that is keeping the country together. And he believed in the transformation that it is going through."
      Reflecting on their father’s career as a journalist, they say Khashoggi was “like a rock and roll star” when they were out with him in Saudi Arabia.
      “He was a public figure that was liked by everyone else,” Salah said. “You don’t see that much in media, in print media.” (...)

    • What is visual journalism ? - BBC News

      Article datant de mai 2013

      http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-the-editors-22483705

      So what is visual journalism? It’s a question I get asked a lot - not just by friends and family but by many colleagues in the more traditional walks of media life.

      For many in the newer fields of digital journalism, it’s simply about visualising data, or using graphics such as maps or charts to explain stories - and of course it is about that.

      But in the BBC, it’s also about bringing together our TV designers with the teams that create the more high-end multimedia graphics online and harnessing the unprecedented creative opportunities that brings. So we want to use our skill and creativity to engage and inform our audiences on the biggest, most significant stories, providing insightful, personal and shareable visual explanations.

    Amongst the many resources available pertaining to Los Angeles are websites, blogs, podcasts, and other online-only resources. I read many of them regularly, some too much, and almost all of them occasionally. For my own use and for the use of others (especially explorers and adventurers) I’ve here compiled what I hope is as conclusive a webography (or “webliography”) of Los Angeles sources. Magazines, books, and other print media will be included in the Los Angeles Bibliography.

  • PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: Diseases Neglected by the Media in Espírito Santo, Brazil in 2011–2012
    http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0004662

    Abstract

    Background
    The aims of the present study were to identify and analyse the Diseases Neglected by the Media (DNMs) via a comparison between the most important health issues to the population of Espírito Santo, Brazil, from the epidemiological perspective (health value) and their effective coverage by the print media, and to analyse the DNMs considering the perspective of key journalists involved in the dissemination of health topics in the state media.

    Methodology
    Morbidity and mortality data were collected from official documents and from Health Information Systems. In parallel, the diseases reported in the two major newspapers of Espírito Santo in 2011–2012 were identified from 10,771 news articles. Concomitantly, eight interviews were conducted with reporters from the two newspapers to understand the journalists’ reasons for the coverage or neglect of certain health/disease topics.

    Principal Findings
    Quantitatively, the DNMs identified diseases associated with poverty, including tuberculosis, leprosy, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and trachoma. Apart from these, diseases with outbreaks in the period evaluated, including whooping cough and meningitis, some cancers, respiratory diseases, ischaemic heart disease, and stroke, were also seldom addressed by the media. In contrast, dengue fever, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, tracheal cancer, and bronchial and lung cancers were broadly covered in the period analysed, corroborating the tradition of media disclosure of these diseases. Qualitatively, the DNMs included rare diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), leishmaniasis, Down syndrome, and verminoses. The reasons for the neglect of these topics by the media included the political and economic interests of the newspapers, their editorial line, and the organizational routine of the newsrooms.

    Conclusions
    Media visibility acts as a strategy for legitimising priorities and contextualizing various realities. Therefore, we propose that the health problems identified should enter the public agenda and begin to be recognized as legitimate demands.

  • Du charmes des médias séoudiens...

    Ce câble présente la situation des #médias en #Arabie_saoudite. Il y a une forme d’humour involontaire dans ce rapport...
    http://wikileaks.ch/cable/2009/05/09RIYADH651.html

    ¶1. (S) Summary: The Saudi regulatory system offers the al-Saud regime a means to manipulate the nation’s print media to promote its own agenda without exercising day-to-day oversight over journalists, and Saudi journalists are free to write what they wish provided they do not criticize the ruling family or expose government corruption. In addition, most media in Saudi Arabia—print and electronic—are owned by royal family members, and accordingly self-censorship is the order of the day. In comparison to a few years ago, however, the media business in Saudi Arabia is dynamic, fueled by increased demand by Saudi and pan-Arab audiences, new licensing agreements with US and other international media, and an unprecedented level of openness to outside ideas.

    Donc :
    – le système est conçu pour permettre au régime de manipuler les médias imprimés et promouvoir son propre agenda, sans avoir besoin d’exercer un contrôle quotidien sur les journalistes ;
    – les journalistes sont « libres » du moment qu’ils ne critiquent pas la famille régnante et la corruption du gouvernement ;
    – la plupart des médias appartiennent à la famille régnante ;
    – l’autocensure est la règle (mais les journalistes sont tout de même libres) ;
    – mais, « cependant », le « business » des médias beaucoup plus « dynamique » !

    In interviews with Embassy and Consulate Jeddah officers before the early December Eid holiday, XXXXXXXXXXXX editors and XXXXXXXXXXXX TV managers outlined key elements of these trends and adumbrated how the long hand of the al-Saud—motivated by profit and politics—retains a strong hold over media in this sophisticated new environment, through means ranging from refined Interior Ministry procedures for recalcitrant journalists, to directives by King Abdallah himself to adopt progressive perspectives as an antidote to extremist thinking. End summary.

    À nouveau :
    – contrôle des journalistes,
    – les récalcitrants subissent les « procédures polies » du ministère de l’intérieur,
    – et ils doivent suivre les directives du roi Abdallah pour, tenez-vous bien, adopter des « perspectives progressistes » pour lutter contre la « pensée extrémiste ». Adballah « progressistes » ?

    Ce qui n’empêche pas ces « progressistes » de carrément mentir aux américains sur leur activité média :

    It is worth noting, however, that other Saudi editors we’ve spoken to always refer to the Saudi Research and Marketing Group as being “owned” by Prince Salman, despite the fact that XXXXXXXXXXXX told us that he is not a shareholder and the official holdings of XXXXXXXXXXXX amount to only ten percent of the company. When this was noted by emboff to one of our press contacts, he told us that it was well-known that Prince Salman owns SRMG and controls its direction through his son Faisal.
