In a perfect world, Internet comments could accelerate science and democracy, commerce and charity. The endless space after articles would overflow with the collective wisdom of crowds — expertly moderated by fair-minded community-builders. Blogs would prefigure a radically democratic space of mutual dialogue — or at least a high-tech version of the FCC’s old “fairness doctrine,” offering one and all a chance to correct, clarify, or contradict the author’s line. Civility would reign as the “unforced force of the better argument” nudged authors and readers alike toward an ideal speech situation, unachievable in older, more unidirectional media.
