Reports says Jordanian authorities arrested, harassed pro-Palestinian activists
Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that Jordanian authorities targeted citizens who have taken part in pro-Palestine protests or engaged in online advocacy since October 7.
Jordanian lawyers representing detainees told HRW that the authorities had likely arrested hundreds of people for their involvement in the protests that swept the nation after Israel launched its war on Gaza, in some cases using a new and highly controversial cybercrimes law.
Parliament passed the law in August 2023 which, according to HRW, “undermines free speech, threatens internet users’ right to anonymity, and introduces a new authority to control social media, risking a surge in censorship”.

AMMAN, Thursday, December 17, 2020 (WAFA) – The Jordanian Foreign Ministry today condemned the adoption by the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, in its preliminary reading, of a law legalizing settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank.
In statements published by the Jordanian news agency, Petra, the ministry’s spokesperson, Daifallah Alfayez, condemned the vote, describing it as a flagrant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions, foremost of which is the Security Council resolution 2334 on settlements.
He stressed that the outposts are neither legitimate nor legal, and are based on private Palestinian property, and that the Israeli settlement policy in the occupied Palestinian territories, whether building or expanding settlements, seizing lands or displacing Palestinians, is illegal, a unilateral-step in violation of international law, and undermines the foundations of peace and efforts to resolve the conflict and achieve a comprehensive and just peace as well as the chances for a two-state solution.
Alfayez called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities by pressuring Israel to stop its settlement policy.

The Israeli pleaded guilty to crossing the borders illegally, but pleaded not guilty to drug possession, which he stated was intended for personal use only, claiming this to be legal in Israel.
Local sources revealed that the court sentenced Kotov to one year in prison for drug possession, insisting that drug possession is illegal in Jordan. However, the sentence was reduced to three months, because he is married with children.

Several recent incidents underscore the cooling in Jordanian-Israeli relations 25 years after the two signed the Wadi ‘Araba peace agreement. Israel’s imprisonment without charge of two Jordanian nationals of Palestinian origin during the summer led to Jordan’s withdrawal of its ambassador “for consultations” until their release last month after repeated protests. While the Jordanians languished in Israeli prison, Jordan arrested an Israeli infiltrator and, instead of turning a blind eye as had frequently happened with such incidents in the past, sent him to trial at the state security court. Nor have earlier incidents been forgotten, such as the killing of two Jordanians at the Israeli embassy in Amman in 2017 and the killing of a Jordanian judge at the crossing between Jordan and Israel in 2014.
Most significant, however, was Jordan’s decision last year not to renew the 25-year lease on Baqoura and Ghumar, two enclaves it had allowed Israel to continue to farm as part of the Wadi ‘Araba agreement. The enclaves were returned to Jordan in November despite Israel’s clear desire to extend the agreement. To get a fuller picture of the issues behind the deterioration of Jordan’s relations with Israel and their implications for Jordanian-Palestinian relations, Al-Shabaka spoke to Oraib Rantawi, the founder and director general of the Amman-based Al Quds Center for Political Studies and an Al-Shabaka policy analyst. On Tuesday morning, 26 November 2019, Palestinian prisoner, Sami Abu-Diak, 36, died at al-Ramla prison clinic. Abu-Diak, from Silat al-Dahr village near Jenin, had spent 17 years in Israeli prison, and was recently transferred to the clinic in Israel due to his deteriorating health condition, having cancer since 2015.
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) holds Israeli authorities responsible for Abu-Daik’s death, and expresses its concern that Israeli authorities stalled in providing adequate and timely medical care for the deceased.
PCHR condemns the Israeli neglect of numerous calls for Abu-Diak’s release, as is standard in humanitarian cases like his, despite knowledge of his ailing health, choosing to leave him to die in prison.
Israeli forces refused all calls by human rights groups and others to release Abu-Diak, and kept him in custody at al-Ramla prison clinic, commonly referred to as “the slaughterhouse” in reference to the poor treatment and care provided at it, despite knowledge of his ailing health.
Abu-Diak’s legs and arms were cuffed to his bed. Israeli forces had scheduled a hearing for his release request on 02 December 2019; unfortunately, Abu-Diak did not survive.

Jordan, on Tuesday, condemned the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, which have so far left five Palestinians dead, and many others injured, according to, Jordan’s official news agency, Petra.
Spokesperson for Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Daifallah Al-Fayez, said that “the Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip and targeting of innocent civilians will only increase tension and violence, deepen despair and promote extremist agendas in the region, and will not lead to any solutions,” Petra reported.
Al-Fayez stated that “the solution to the problem in the Gaza Strip lies in finding a real political horizon through returning to the negotiating table between Israel and Palestine, lifting the unjust blockade on the enclave, promptly addressing the humanitarian needs there and respecting international law.”
He held Israel accountable for this escalation and its repercussions, calling on the international community to promptly act to stop the Israeli aggression on the Gaza strip, and to provide protection for the Palestinian people, The Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) documented.

sraeli authorities have transferred a Jordanian woman who is being held at a detention center in the occupied territories, to a hospital, following a deterioration in her health condition more than a month after she went on hunger strike, in protest against her administrative detention.
Sufyan al-Qudah, a spokesman for Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said, in a statement published on his Twitter page, that Heba Abdel-Baqi Labadi had been taken to hospital on Thursday, and provided with the necessary treatment before being returned to prison on the same day.

Qudah said, at the time, that his ministry had informed the Israeli side of its complete rejection of the verdict, and called for the immediate release of the Jordanian woman.
On October 14, Qudah said that Jordan’s Ambassador to Tel Aviv, Walid Obeidat, had demanded the immediate release of Labadi and Abdurrahman Marei, and their repatriation, in his meetings and frequent contacts with Israeli officials, Jordan’s official news agency Petra reported. (...)

The Palestinian Detainees Committee has reported, Thursday, that the Israeli Authorities issued a five-month Administrative Detention order, without charges or trial, against the female detainee from Jordan.
The Committee stated that the detainee, identified as Hiba Ahmad al-Lubbadi , 24, is currently held at the al-Maskobiyya detention and interrogation center, in occupied Jerusalem.
It is worth mentioning that the young woman was abducted by the soldiers, on August 20, 2019, while she was crossing into the West Bank, and has been denied any legal representation since then.
Hiba, a Jordanian citizen who also holds a Palestinian ID, was accompanying her mother to Jenin, in northern West Bank, to attend a wedding celebration for one of their relatives.
The young woman was interrogated for 35 consecutive days in Petah Tikva prison, and no charges were ever filed against her before a court decided to slap her with an Administrative Detention. She was also held at the Damon Israeli prison.
Her brother, Hatem, voiced an appeal to local and international legal and human rights groups to intervene and secure her release and added that the family was never allowed to visit with her since her abduction and imprisonment.
