Israeli police wounded dozens of Palestinians were wounded in clashes that erupted Wednesday when Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound was opened to Jewish visitors, an AFP correspondent said. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP that Palestinians threw “stones and firecrackers” at police when they opened the walled compound’s gates. Police responded with stun grenades, Rosenfeld said, and closed the complex to the Jewish visitors after a number had toured the site. read (...)

Israeli police clashed with Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, injuring six Palestinians, Ma’an news agency reported. Director of Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Omar al-Kiswani told Ma’an that more than 50 Israeli “special forces” stormed the compound through the Moroccan Gate and the Chain Gate during the raid, closing the Chain Gate shut. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld claimed the violence erupted when police opened one of the walled compound’s gates to non-Muslim visitors, according to the regular visiting hours. read more

An Israeli court sentenced firebrand Islamic preacher Sheikh Raed Salah Tuesday to eight months in prison for inciting Muslims to violence over #jerusalem's #al-Aqsa mosque. Salah, leader of the radical northern wing of the Islamic Movement in occupied #Palestine, was convicted in November of inciting “all Muslims and Arabs” in 2007 to “start an intifada (uprising) to support holy Jerusalem and the blessed al-Aqsa mosque.” In addition to the eight-month sentence, Salah will serve a further eight months if he repeats the same felony within three years, according to a court document. read more

At least 18 Palestinian worshipers were injured on Friday when Israeli forces raided the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem, Ma’an news agency reported. A medical source told Ma’an that 18 people, including a child, were being treated in the compound’s clinic for injuries caused by stun grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets. A group of right-wing Israelis entered the al-Aqsa mosque compound on Wednesday under armed guard, Ma’an news agency reported. Witnesses told Ma’an that the group of extremists was led by Yehuda Glick, who chairs the Temple Mount Heritage Fund. Palestinian worshipers threw fireworks in the direction of the group in opposition to the visit. Shortly afterward, Israeli police officers escorted the group out of the compound.
