An eviction in East Jerusalem lies at the center of a conflict that led to war between Israel and Hamas. But for millions of Palestinians, the routine indignities of occupation are part of daily life.

JERUSALEM — Muhammad Sandouka built his home in the shadow of the Temple Mount before his second son, now 15, was born.

They demolished it together, after Israeli authorities decided that razing it would improve views of the Old City for tourists.

Mr. Sandouka, 42, a countertop installer, had been at work when an inspector confronted his wife with two options: Tear the house down, or the government would not only level it but also bill the Sandoukas $10,000 for its expenses.

Such is life for Palestinians living under Israel’s occupation: always dreading the knock at the front door.

The looming removal of six Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem set off a round of protests that helped ignite the latest war between Israel and Gaza. But to the roughly three million Palestinians living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 war and has controlled through decades of failed peace talks, the story was exceptional only because it attracted an international spotlight.

For the most part, they endure the frights and indignities of the Israeli occupation in obscurity.

Even in supposedly quiet periods, when the world is not paying attention, Palestinians from all walks of life routinely experience exasperating impossibilities and petty humiliations, bureaucratic controls that force agonizing choices, and the fragility and cruelty of life under military rule, now in its second half-century. After hundreds of Palestinian casualties in clashes with Israeli forces, police commissioner says they ’showed too much restraint’

The controversial annual flag march by Jews in Jerusalem’s Old City was canceled by the police and then reinstated against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the city between Jews and Palestinians that culminated late in the afternoon Monday with rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, directed at the Jerusalem area by Hamas.

At one point in the day, the police decided to break up the Jerusalem Day flag march, which generally attracts large number of religious Jewish young people, moments after it began, following a day of violent clashes in the Old City on Monday. But late in the afternoon, the police announced that the Jerusalem district commander of the police decided that the march would be allowed to proceed after all, but not through the Damascus Gate.

Speaking to Channel 12 News Monday evening, Israel Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said the police had been too restrained in their response to the violence. “I assume that at the moment, we’re at the stage of taking off the kid gloves of sensitivity that had prevailed,” he said.

Clashes on the Temple Mount compound on Monday morning left more than 300 Palestinians wounded, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent, prompting an Israeli decision to bar Jews from entering the holy site.

Despite the hundreds of Palestinian casualties, Shabtai said police “showed too much restraint.”

The Damascus Gate is a main entryway into the Muslim Quarter and a flashpoint in its own right last month over an earlier decision by the police to place crowd barriers in the plaza in front of the gate. The march is timed for Jerusalem Day, which this year falls on Monday, marking the city’s reunification following the 1967 Six-Day War.

Israel’s decision to reroute the march away from the Damascus Gate and the Muslim Quarter followed a day of intense clashes between Palestinian worshippers and police. The decision was made just one hour before the march was scheduled to begin. Haaretz has learned from several police sources that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the decision to reroute the march.

The march, which the organizers view as a celebration of the return of the Jewish people to the Old City of Jerusalem after Jews were excluded from the area by the 1949 armistice line, is seen as a provocation by many Palestinians, particularly as the route traditionally includes the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.

Over the past several days, tensions in Jerusalem have centered on clashes between Muslims and Israeli police on the Temple Mount in the closing days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, where a pending court case pitted Jews against Palestinian residents of the neighborhood in a dispute over homes that had been owned by Jews in the 19th century and where the Jordanian government settled Palestinians in the 1950s.

Netanyahu’s office had been inundated with messages from prominent figures abroad urging Israel to put a halt to the violence in Jerusalem and to change the route of the Jerusalem Day march, a Palestinian source said. “It’s in Netanyahu’s hands. It’s up to him to stop the violence spreading to the West Bank,” the source said.

Rocket alert sirens warning of incoming rockets from Gaza sounded Monday in the Jerusalem area moments after a 6 P.M. ultimatum issued by Hamas for Israel to remove its forces from Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. A spokesman for the Hamas militant group said the leadership of a joint command of armed movements in the Gaza Strip had given Israel “an ultimatum until 6 P.M.” to withdraw its security forces from the Temple Mount compound and the city’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip, is closely watching all of the developments in Jerusalem, its leaders have said. “The resistance is ready for any incident, and will not sit idly by if Israel does not curb aggression and stop all plots against the Palestinian people and against the Al-Aqsa mosque,” the leader of Hamas’ political wing, Ismail Haniyeh, said.

The U.N. Security Council held emergency consultations Monday on the escalating violence in east Jerusalem and was considering a proposed statement calling on Israel to cease evictions and calling for “restraint” and respect for “the historic status quo at the holy sites.”

Council diplomats said all 15 members expressed concern at the clashes and rising violence but the United States, Israel’s closest ally, said a statement might not be useful at this time. Nonetheless, the U.S. agreed to have council experts discuss the statement.

Israeli soldiers attacked on Sunday night, many Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, in occupied Jerusalem, causing injuries, and abducted five.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers, including mounted police officers, invaded the neighborhood and assaulted dozens of residents, including children and women, causing injuries.

They added that the invasion was carried out when the situation was calm, and no protests were taking place.

The Israeli army was also pushing and dragging the Palestinians from the neighborhood and forced them all away. Locals said the streets are now filled with soldiers and police officers.

Israel has been trying to remove and evict at least 75 Palestinian families from their homes and neighborhood, to replace them with illegal colonialist settlers.

It is worth mentioning that the soldiers abducted, Sunday, twenty-five Palestinians; 24 of them are former political prisoners, during ongoing invasions and violent searches of homes and buildings, in Jerusalem.

In addition, the soldiers injured overnight until morning hours, Sunday, at least 205 Palestinians, including some who were injured in the eyes, during protests that erupted after dozens of soldiers and police officers invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque; The soldiers also abducted and detained many Palestinians.

Clashes break out near Damascus Gate and in Sheikh Jarrah ■ Israeli police deploy tear gas, stun grenades and sponge-tipped bullets ■ 29 Palestinians arrested in East Jerusalem, two in the Old City

Violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police broke out in Jerusalem Saturday night, one day after 205 Palestinians and 17 police officers were injured in violent clashes that garnered international condemnation.

Police used sponge-tipped bullets and tear gas against the thousands of Palestinians who were gathered at the Damascus Gate. Palestinians threw stones at Israeli police forces at the site.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that 17 Palestinians had been wounded, many by sponge-tipped bullets. Six were evacuated to hospitals. They added that the Israeli police had prevented ambulances from reaching the site to evacuate the injured.

The clashes began shortly after prayers marking Laylat Al-Qadr, the holiest night in the month of Ramadan, concluded at Al-Aqsa Mosque. Some 90,000 worshippers had come to pray at the site.

Clashes also broke out in Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem, and police dispersed protesters with stun grenades and stink bombs. The police said that dozens of residents had instigated clashes that included “flying Palestinian flags and throwing stones toward police forces.”

The police added that officers had been attacked in the Old City and two suspects had been arrested. Palestinian protesters threw stones at officers, and one officer was lightly injured and received medical treatment at the site.

The Israeli army said some 450 Gazans are protesting near the border fence in solidarity with the Palestinians in Jerusalem. The Israeli army said that protesters are “burning tires and throwing explosives. IDF soldiers are spread out at sites along the border and are using riot dispersal methods.” According to Palestinian reports, dozens, not hundreds, of Palestinian youth are protesting at the border.

To Jerusalem on foot

Earlier Saturday, the Jerusalem police halted dozens of buses carrying worshippers on their way to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.

Hundreds of worshippers made their way to the Old City on foot. Police argued that they had reason to believe that some of the passengers were planning to cause disturbances.

The Israeli Police spokesman Eli Levi said that the police had no intention of closing the road to Jerusalem, but rather were attempting to remove specific individuals from the buses. The police eventually allowed the buses to continue on to Jerusalem.

The police later allowed the buses to carry the passengers to Jerusalem, after they caused severe roadblocks on the Highway.

The Israeli army, police and Magen David Adom bolstered their presence in East Jerusalem and around the Temple Mount on Saturday, as they expect violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians will continue through the night.

Police believe the clashes on the Temple Mount are led by Hamas operatives, and that they are linked to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ decision to postpone the Palestinian parliamentary elections this month.

Activists arrested

Israel Police carried out arrests of 29 Palestinians in East Jerusalem raids earlier Saturday afternoon according to Palestinian activists. The police have been arresting young Palestinians and activists since early Saturday morning, according to the activists.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Defense Minister Benny Gantz, IDF chief of staff Aviv Kochavi, the head of Shin Bet and other senior officials on Saturday to assess the situation in Jerusalem.

“Israel is acting responsibly to ensure law and order in Jerusalem while maintaining freedom of worship in the holy places,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

Gantz also commented on the escalation in Jerusalem, saying that "Extremists on both sides cannot be allowed to cause an escalation of the situation. Israel will continue to ensure freedom of worship at the Temple Mount and at the same time not allow terror to raise its head or disturb public order.”

Adding to the tensions in Jerusalem’s Old City, dozens of young Jewish activists marched through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City ahead of the Al Qadr night, singing the Israeli song “Jerusalem of Gold.”

Rallies were also held in Israeli-Arab cities on Saturday, with protesters waving Palestinian flags in solidarity with the Palestinians who were injured in East Jerusalem on Friday. The rallies took place in Nazareth, Umm al-Fahm, Tamra and other Arab-Israeli towns. A peaceful protest also took place in Jaffa, which ended just before sunset.

’Crosses a red line’

On Friday night, at least 205 Palestinians and 17 police officers were wounded as clashes erupted at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, in a serious escalation in tensions that have been building up in Jerusalem over the past weeks.

United Arab List chairman Mansour Abbas declared that he won’t allow any escalations at Al-Aqsa to prevent freedom of worship for Muslims, calling every injury sustained by a worshipper an act which ’crosses a red line.’

The United States called for both sides to ease tensions on Friday night.

“The United States is extremely concerned about ongoing confrontations in Jerusalem, including on the Haram al-Sharif / Temple Mount and in Sheikh Jarrah, which have reportedly resulted in scores of injured people,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in perhaps the Biden administration’s most in-depth comment on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to date.

Jordan and Egypt fiercely condemned Israel for the violence, saying it’s on Israel to uphold freedom of worship for Palestinian locals.

A spokesperson for the Jordanian Foreign Ministry warned against a “dangerous escalation,” emphasizing that an international law tasks Israel responsible for upholding peace for worshippers at Al-Aqsa, even as an occupying force.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez slammed Israel’s behavior, especially abusing the human rights of Palestinians, and Israel’s unacceptable efforts to uproot Palestinians from their homes in the flash point East Jerusalem neighborhood Sheikh Jarrah.

About 100 Palestinians were injured in violent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Jerusalem overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, as some 90,000 Muslim worshipers poured into Al-Aqsa Mosque to mark Ramadan’s holiest night.

Clashes were concentrated on the Temple Mount, at various sites in the Old City and in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. They follow escalating tensions in the city throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and have garnered international condemnation.

Hundreds of young Palestinians threw fireworks and stones at police after early morning prayers on Sunday morning. Most of them dispersed, but a few dozen remain at the site, clashing with officers. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that 10 people were injured in the morning’s clashes; six of them were evacuated to the hospital.

The Red Crescent established a field hospital near Al-Aqsa Mosque to treat the injured, who were hit by sponge-tipped bullets, stun grenades and tear gas fired by Israeli police.

The organization said that it treated another 90 people over the course of the night, 14 of them at the field hospital. Six children were bruised in the commotion, including a one-year-old infant.

The Red Crescent had reported earlier in the night that the Israeli police had prevented its ambulances from entering the Damascus Gate area to evacuate the injured.

Police evacuated the Western Wall plaza twice over the course of the night after Palestinians fired fireworks at the area, but worshipers returned minutes later.

Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai said that police had regained control over the situation by about 1:30 A.M., and that about 20,000 Muslim worshipers remained on the Temple Mount.

In Sheikh Jarrah, which has become a flashpoint for violence between Jews and Palestinians in the past week over the planned evictions of Palestinian homes in the neighborhood, police dispersed the dozens of protesters who had gathered with stun grenades and stink grenades. Palestinians also pelted a car belonging to Jews with stones.

Police said that the clashes involved “Waving Palestinian flags and throwing stones at officers. Police began dispersions and were forced to use means.” Two Palestinians were arrested on suspicion of pepper spraying officers. During the arrest, police said that they found weapons on their persons.

Earlier in the evening, police reported that they arrested two suspects who attacked police officers in the Old City. One officer was lightly injured and received medical treatment after Palestinian protesters began throwing stones at police forces.

A rocket was fired from Gaza into Israel in the early hours of Sunday morning, landing in an open area. The IDF responded by attacking a Hamas military post in the southern Gaza Strip.

Dozens of Palestinians were wounded Friday as clashes erupted at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, in a serious escalation in tensions that have been building up in Jerusalem over the past weeks.

The Palestinian Red Crescent emergency service said 53 people were wounded in clashes with police there and elsewhere in Jerusalem, including 23 who were hospitalized. It says most were wounded in the face and eyes by rubber-coated bullets and shrapnel from stun grenades.

The clashes were the latest in a deadly day that saw Israeli forces shoot and kill two Palestinians after three men opened fire on an Israeli base in the occupied West Bank.Israeli police were standing by as tens of thousands packed in the mosque on the final Friday of Ramadan and many stayed on to protest in support of Palestinians facing eviction from homes on land claimed by Jewish settlers.

Some 70,000 worshippers attended the final Friday prayers of Ramadan at Al-Aqsa, the Islamic endowment that oversees the site said. Thousands protested afterwards, waving the green flags of the Islamic militant group Hamas and chanting pro-Hamas slogans before dispersing peacefully.

Tensions boiled over after the evening prayer, when hundreds of Palestinian worshippers began hurling stones and other objects at the Israeli forces, who responded with riot gear.

Israeli police said six officers involved in the clashes required medical attention.

Video footage shows worshippers throwing chairs, shoes and rocks toward the police and officers responding by opening fire.

Sheikh Jarrah protest

Meanwhile, in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, dozens partook in the weekly demonstration against the eviction plans, which over the past weeks attract more crowds and attention.

Police said they dispersed the crowd after some of the protesters started hurling stones. Two demonstrators were detained, and two were wounded by stun grendaes.

De violents affrontements ont éclaté entre la police israélienne et des jeunes palestiniens dans le quartier de Sheikh Jarrah à Jérusalem-Est occupée. Les habitants protestent contre une vague d’expulsions ordonnée par un tribunal, laquelle devrait chasser une quarantaine de Palestiniens, dont une dizaine d’enfants, de leurs maisons.

Les policiers israéliens, dont certains à cheval, ont tenté de repousser les manifestants à l’aide de gaz lacrymogènes, de grenades étourdissantes et d’« eau puante », rapporte une correspondante de Middle East Eye présente sur place.

« On dirait une zone de guerre », confie un manifestant à MEE.

Par ailleurs, la police a battu plusieurs manifestants avec des matraques et en a arrêté au moins cinq, dont trois ont été identifiés : Seif Hammoda, Ahmad Abbasi et Siwar Qasim.

Une dizaine de Palestiniens au moins ont été blessés, a signalé le Croissant-Rouge palestinien juste avant minuit heure locale. Six des blessés ont inhalé des gaz lacrymogènes, trois ont été touchés par des balles en caoutchouc et un autre a subi un traumatisme contondant, énumère l’organisation. (...)

The most frightening and depressing thing that happened in Jerusalem recently isn’t the pogroms against the Palestinians. These of course are endlessly frightening and depressing, but most frightening and depressing is something new about the identity of the assailants.

We already had the Lehava phalanxes, the La Familia militias and the hilltop thugs, and now the ultra-Orthodox have joined in. There’s a new bully in the neighborhood and they’re scarier than all the rest.

The rioters in shtreimels might sweep Israel to fascist places it hasn’t known before, thanks to their huge electoral potential. The ultra-Orthodox are the reserves of the neo-Nazi movement developing in Israel, and they promise a great future for MKs Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Without the ultra-Orthodox, those two are a mere curiosity. Thanks to the ultra-Orthodox, their party might become the Alternative for Germany or the Sweden Democrats of Israel, yet much more extreme than those two most far-right parties in Western Europe. The brownshirts could change their color to white. This is frightening because the ultra-Orthodox are many, and it’s depressing because there was once a different ultra-Orthodox majority that I once respected and knew, one fallen victim to persecution and ostracism.

The original sin was the establishment of huge ultra-Orthodox settlements in the 1990s that became the largest settlements in the West Bank, much larger than their ideological predecessors. What began as a low-cost housing solution, free of political beliefs, became extreme nationalism. With terrifying speed, those who until a generation ago were considered non-Zionist or political doves with leaders like Rabbi Elazar Shach and Rabbi Ovadia Yosef became bearers of the flag of Israeli fascism.

Where are the days when they burned trash bins only because of desecration of the Sabbath, and who would have thought we would miss those days? Where are the rabbis who said “there’s no obstacle to relinquishing parts of the Land of Israel” and “relinquishing [these lands] for peace is not relinquishing,” as Rabbi Shach said.

The fear came true: The views of the ultra-Orthodox were decided by their place of residence. They proved that it’s impossible to live on stolen Palestinian land without hating its owners. They settled in the Palestinian West Bank and became wonderfully integrated into the apartheid landscape around them. They became haters of Arabs and supporters of the far right. The road from there to participation in pogroms was short.

In last month’s election they expressed this clearly. The Religious Zionism alliance became the third largest party in their community. In Jerusalem it won 9 percent of the vote and in Betar Ilit 10 percent, six times more than Likud. In Bnei Brak and in Modi’in Ilit, the largest Jewish city in the territories, it’s the third largest party. With reserves like this, one day we’ll have a Kahanist as prime minister; half of Israel already considers Naftali Bennett a legitimate candidate and even longs for him.

True, only a few hundred ultra-Orthodox took part in the pogroms, but the rabbis did nothing to stop them, maybe because they knew that the genie was out of the bottle. Now the numbers will grow. The young ultra-Orthodox might change the rules of the game.

The pictures from the past few days in Jerusalem are terrifying. Leave aside “proper” media coverage, which tries to maintain “balance” when on one side is the occupation, which has no balance. Leave aside the shocking pronouncements by the public security minister and the police commanders who condemned only Palestinian violence. This violence is the most justified and restrained act of resistance against injustice and other violence, and it comes as a direct response to the police’s ongoing abuse of the Palestinians in Jerusalem and the pogroms against them by far-right extremists.

Make no mistake: The mass attacks on Arabs in Jerusalem are the harbingers of Israeli neo-Nazism. Intimidating marches, beatings, arson, looting and calls for death are exactly what neo-Nazism looks like. God save us from its ultra-Orthodox emissaries who have joined the fray.

Decision to close off plaza during Ramadan, when it is one of the most popular areas for crowds to gather, led to protests that have been linked to wider unrest

Police barriers at Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate plaza were removed on Sunday evening on the orders of the police commissioner, allowing crowds to sit in the area for the first time in two weeks.

The area’s closure, which took place during Ramadan, sparked protests by Palestinians angered by the decision to prevent people from gathering in the area, the most popular public area in East Jerusalem during the holiday. Authorities explained the decision as an attempt to regulate the number of pedestrians entering the Old City.

Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai gave the order to remove the barriers after requests by Islamic religious figures and in coordination with the Jerusalem District police commander Maj. Gen. Doron Turgeman.

Senior police officials were opposed to Shabtai’s decision, saying it could be seen as a surrender to violence in the wake of clashes. Associates of Shabtai rejected the criticism, saying that the barriers may be put back in place if there are further disturbances. Earlier on Sunday, Turgeman said he did not plan to remove the barricades, despite requests from representatives of East Jerusalem’s residents.

As has been the case every day recently, police deployed in large numbers in the area on Sunday evening, but there were no disturbances. Mohammed Abu Humus, an East Jerusalem resident who was among the first in the crowd to enter the plaza upon its reopening, said: “This is a victory. The Jerusalemites succeeded. The government is always coming down on us with new laws, but we took to the streets and pulled it off, and now we are celebrating.”

Bezalel Smotrich, chairman of the far-right Religious Zionism party, said after news of the gate’s reopening that “[h]e who runs away from terrorism will be chased by terrorism. These are the rules of the game in the Middle East,” adding that authorties should not “destroy Israel’s sterrence and sending a message of weakness to our enemies around us.” Smotrich’s party colleague, lawmaker Itamar Ben-Gvir, said that “Israel’s government has surrendered to rioters” and warned that “this capitulation will yet cost us much blood.”

Ayman Odeh, chairman of the Joint List alliance of majority Arab parties, meanwhile said: “This is not the first time that the police and government have acted violently, then try to paper over it and are ultimately caught lying. It’s good that they removed the barriers at Damascus Gate, which did nothing but sow violence and hatred. The price was paid by the residents of East Jerusalem, who will continue to struggle against the occupation policy’s oppression and discrimination.”

On Saturday, Shabtai told reporters asking why the steps near the gate had been closed off that “the status quo forbidding people from sitting in the area around the Damascus Gate has existed for over a decade.”

Yet investigations by Haaretz contradict this statement. Testimonies from Old City residents, Israeli activists and photos from the last decade show that the stairs leading to the main square have never been blocked off with barricades, as they have been this year.

The area surrounding the Damascus Gate is one of the main social gathering places for the Palestinian public during Ramadan. In all the photographs located by Haaretz that depict the area during Ramadan in recent years, hundreds of people can be seen gathering there.

However, in times of high tension, and occasionally during Ramadan, the police have been known to forcefully disperse groups of Palestinians and prevent loitering in the area for short periods of time. None of the people Haaretz spoke with could recall a time when the stairs were closed off for the entire month of Ramadan.

In 2016, during a wave of stabbing attacks in the area of the Damascus Gate, Israel closed off the stairs for a number of weeks, but it was not during the month of Ramadan.

Last week, clashes broke out after young Palestinian men tried to breach the barriers. The clashes involved dozens of police officers and residents, who hurled stones and bottles at the police. Twenty Palestinians and a few officers were slightly hurt during the confrontations.

Since then, violence in Jerusalem between its Jewish and Arab residents has been on the rise, with several incidents causing tensions to escalate. A number of young Palestinians posted videos on social media of attacks on Jews, while in central Jerusalem young right-wing Jews marched and assaulted Palestinians. Last week, dozens of Palestinians were wounded and dozens of people, both right-wing Israelis and Palestinians, were arrested as the far-right, anti-Arab group Lehava held a march in the city. Palestinian groups in Gaza that took credit for the firing of rockets on Friday said the action was in response to events in Jerusalem. Several attacks on Jews in Jerusalem were reported on Friday, ranging from firebombs and beatings.

Several Israeli soldiers and police, on Saturday night, used excessive force in an attempt to evacuate hundreds of Palestinian worshipers gathered at the Damascus Gate, one of the entrances into the Old City of occupied Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Muslim worshipers were trying to go to the sacred Al-Aqsa mosque for the Ramadan nightly
Taraweeh prayers, according to Palestinian WAFA News Agency.

It stated that Israeli police fired tear gas, stun grenades and waste-water cannons to force the peaceful worshipers to leave the plaza, adding that police physically attacked some of the worshipers during the evacuation.

No injuries were reported at the time of this report, and one Palestinian man was detained, no identity was provided.

Palestinians demonstrated in many areas of the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip to reject the Israeli assault on peaceful Muslim worshipers in occupied Jerusalem, during the holy month of Ramadan.

The head of the Higher Islamic Council in Occupied Jerusalem, Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, on Saturday, commended the Palestinian youths for their bravery in confronting the occupation forces and defending the Al-Aqsa mosque from further violations, the Palestinian Information Center reported. (...)

Israeli Soldiers Injure Dozens of Palestinians In Jerusalem

Update: At least twenty Palestinians have been injured by Israeli rubber-coated steel bullets, and many others were wounded after being assaulted by the soldiers, on Friday at night, in and around the Old City of occupied Jerusalem.

Palestinian Red Crescent Medics moved many of the wounded to several Palestinian hospitals and clinics in Jerusalem.

In ongoing Israeli escalation against the Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian capital, Jerusalem, the soldiers shot at least eleven Palestinians with rubber-coated steel bullets and caused dozens to suffer the severe effects of teargas inhalation in yet another invasion into the at-Tour town, and the Old City, on Friday at night.

Media sources said the soldiers shot three Palestinians with rubber-coated steel bullets near the main junction of at-Tour town, in addition to firing a barrage of gas bombs and concussion grenades, causing dozens to suffer the effects of tear gas inhalation, cuts, and bruises.

The sources added that the soldiers also used trucks to spray the Palestinians with wastewater mixed with chemicals.

Also, the soldiers invaded the al-‘Isawiya town, in Jerusalem, and fired a barrage of gas bombs in addition to concussion grenades.

Les méthodes douteuses des firmes de renseignement privées israéliennes exposées

Selon un reportage, une agence de renseignements aurait usurpé l’identité de journalistes, soulevant des questions sur la régulation et les limites de l’industrie

Un reportage a accusé, la semaine dernière, une firme israélienne des renseignements d’avoir usurpé l’identité de journalistes pour obtenir de manière illicite des informations d’opposants à un membre de la famille royale émiratie – mettant en lumière ces entreprises israéliennes de cyber-renseignements qui acceptent de travailler pour des régimes totalitaires.

Une enquête du Times of Israël a révélé que le propriétaire de la firme en question, Bluehawk CI, a été traduit devant la justice au sein de l’État juif, dans le passé, et notamment pour fraude. Le ministère de la Défense a choisi de ne pas répondre à une requête de commentaire du Times of Israël concernant la raison pour laquelle il n’avait pas été amené à réguler les activités menées par la firme à l’étranger.

Selon un reportage paru le 6 avril sur le site du Daily Beast , des individus qui avaient prétendu, début 2020, être journaliste pour Fox News et reporter pour le journal italien La Stampa avaient approché deux hommes qui s’opposaient aux autorités de Ras Al Khaimah, l’un des sept émirats constituant les Émirats arabes unis (EAU). Selon le Daily Beast , les deux individus qui avaient usurpé l’identité des deux journalistes avaient tenté d’extraire des informations aux deux hommes concernant leurs conflits judiciaires respectifs avec l’émirat.

L’article publié sur le site souligne comment Israël, ces dernières années, a fait naître une industrie de firmes d’espionnage privées qui, de toute évidence, ne sont pas régulées – avec certains officiers militaires israéliens qui offrent au secteur privé les compétences qu’ils ont acquises dans les unités de renseignement secrètes, vendant souvent leur savoir-faire à des personnalités douteuses ou à des régimes autoritaires.

Le Daily Beast aurait réussi à établir l’identité de la firme privée de renseignement en contactant Facebook, qui a révélé que les comptes utilisés par les deux journalistes présumés étaient associés à Bluehawk CI.

Bluehawk CI s’est refusé, de son côté, à tout commentaire.

Un porte-parole du ministère de la Défense a noté que Bluehawk CI n’apparaissait pas sur sa liste de vendeurs approuvés, mais il n’a pas répondu à une question de suivi sur le rôle présumé du ministère en termes de régulation initiale des initiatives de l’entreprise.

Selon la loi sur le contrôle des exportations, tout exportateur d’équipements de défense ou de savoir-faire particulier, dans le secteur, doit d’abord s’inscrire et recevoir une autorisation de la part de l’Agence de contrôle des exportations de la Défense au sein de l’État juif.

Bluehawk CI est l’une des firmes de renseignement privées les moins connues dans le pays. Fondée en juin 2018, elle offre des solutions dans les domaines de la cybertechnologie et des renseignements, notamment dans la « gestion du génie social et de la campagne de relations publiques » et dans les « enquêtes de renseignement complexes », selon son site internet.

La compagnie a été fondée par Guy Klisman, ancien major au sein de Tsahal – elle lui appartient encore aujourd’hui. Klisman est aussi directeur académique de l’Institut d’innovation Pafos à Chypre, un institut d’études en cybersécurité fondé par Uriel Reichman, professeur de droit à la tête de l’Institut interdisciplinaire de Herzliya. La compagnie de Klisman, Bluehawk CI, est l’un des sponsors de l’équipe de basket du Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Des documents judiciaires révèlent qu’avant de fonder l’entreprise, Klisman a été mis en examen à deux reprises par les procureurs israéliens – une fois pour contrefaçon et une autre pour répondre de multiples débits non-autorisés réalisés sur la carte de crédit de l’une de ses connaissances. Il a plaidé coupable dans le premier dossier. La mise en examen a finalement été annulée dans le second.

Selon le Daily Beast , au mois de février 2020, une personne prétendant s’appeler « Samantha », journaliste de Fox News, a contacté un homme nommé Oussama El Omari par courriel. El Omari est l’ancien directeur-général de l’Autorité chargée de la zone de libre-échange de Ras Al Khaimah. Il a été condamné par contumace aux Émirats arabes unis pour « détournement de fonds et abus de pouvoir » suite à une bataille de succession à Ras Al Khaimah. El Omari, pour sa part, a dénoncé des inculpations purement politiques.

« Samantha » aurait tenté d’obtenir des informations sur ses affaires judiciaires l’opposant à Ras Al Khaimah. Contacté par le Daily Beast , Facebook aurait déclaré à ce dernier que le compte de « Samantha » était lié à Bluehawk CI.

Selon le site d’information, un autre utilisateur de Facebook prétendant être un journaliste pour La Stampa , un journal italien, a contacté Khater Massaad, autre adversaire du régime actuel de Ras Al Khaimah. Massaad était à la tête du fonds souverain de Ras Al Khaimah, RAKIA, jusqu’en 2021. Il a été condamné par une cour émiratie en 2015 pour détournement de fonds au sein de RAKIA, des accusations qui, selon Massaad, étaient tronquées et politiquement motivées.

Le faux journaliste, que Facebook a lié à Bluehawk CI, a de la même façon tenté d’extraire des informations sur sa relation avec les gouvernants de Ras Al Khaimah, a fait savoir le Daily Beast .

« Coût de la vie élevé »
La normalisation récente des liens entre Israël et les Émirats arabes unis a été une aubaine pour les entreprises de renseignement et de cybersécurité, avec des entreprises comme NSO Group, spécialisée dans le hacking téléphonique, Synaptech Capital, spécialisée dans le capital-risque, et Cellebrite, qui ont toutes conclu des accords lucratifs dans ces émirats du désert.

La cybersécurité est l’un des premiers secteurs technologiques en Israël en terme d’investissements récoltés, selon l’Autorité de l’innovation israélienne.

Pour Bluehawk CI, travailler aux EAU a pu être une source de liquidités désespérément nécessaire.

En 2015, avant de fonder Blackhawk CI, Klisman et son épouse – ils ont depuis divorcé – ont déclaré leur faillite devant les tribunaux israéliens. Le couple était endetté à hauteur de centaines de milliers de shekels, dettes qu’ils avaient attribuées au « coût de la vie élevé » au sein de l’État juif.

Israël est l’un des pays les plus chers au monde. Tel Aviv a récemment intégré la cinquième place des villes les plus chères sur le globe.

En 2016, les procureurs israéliens ont mis en examen Klisman pour avoir contrefait des documents judiciaires et des assignations de huissiers de justice pour tenter d’empêcher l’armée israélienne de saisir son salaire pour payer des créditeurs. Un juge l’a reconnu coupable, mais il n’a pas été officiellement condamné et a dû effectuer 250 heures de service communautaire. Klisman s’est retiré de Tsahal à la fin de l’année 2017 et a fondé son entreprise six mois plus tard.

Au mois de janvier 2018, Klisman a été accusé par la police des fraudes d’avoir utilisé la carte de crédit d’une femme rencontrée via un groupe WhatsApp consacré au tennis pour procéder à des achats non-autorisés à hauteur de 1 577 shekels. Une année plus tard, le gouvernement a retiré cette mise en examen.

Klisman n’a pas donné suite à une requête de commentaire de la part du Times of Israël .

Tandis que la personnalité qui a eu recours aux services de Bluehawk reste indéterminée, Radha Stirling, directeur-général de Detained à Dubaï – une entreprise qui représente des clients dans des conflits juridiques avec les gouvernements aux EAU – a la certitude qu’il s’agit bien du gouvernement de Ras Al Khaimah.

« C’est monstrueux », a déclaré Stirling dans un communiqué de presse.

« En confiant par contrat une mission d’espionnage à une firme privée, le gouvernement de Ras Al Khaimah tente d’échapper à la responsabilité de devoir rendre des comptes pour espionner des ressortissants étrangers en-dehors de sa juridiction – mais c’est bien là une violation majeure. Les EAU et Israël doivent assumer leurs responsabilités », a-t-il ajouté.

Où placer la ligne rouge de l’éthique ?
Selon un rapport émis par la cyberadministration israélienne, fin 2018, Israël comptait 421 cyber-entreprises actives dont 7 % – soit une trentaine – sont spécialisées dans le « cyber-renseignement ».

Elad Ratson, ex-diplomate israélien, qui est aussi le fondateur et le directeur-général de Vayehee, une compagnie qui utilise les technologies pour contrer les Fake-news , la désinformation venant de l’étranger ou ce qu’il qualifie « d’armes en ligne d’obstruction massive », a déclaré au Times of Israël qu’il pensait que ce nombre était supérieur, selon ses propres estimations.

La plus grande partie des firmes de cyber-renseignements israéliennes sont spécialisées dans l’OSINT, ou « renseignements open-source », a-t-il noté. « C’est un secteur d’expertise des services israéliens de renseignement. Il y a une forte quantité de données, en ligne, qui sont ouvertement disponibles et les services israéliens de renseignement sont connus pour leur usage efficace de l’apprentissage automatique et de l’intelligence artificielle et pour extraire des informations de qualité de cet océan de données. »

La majorité des firmes israéliennes de renseignement se concentrent sur l’OSINT (Renseignement d’Origine Source Ouverte) passif, poursuit-il, en collectant des données qui sont largement disponibles.

D’autres s’engagent toutefois également dans ce qu’il appelle « l’ingénierie de perception » ou la manipulation du point de vue d’une cible par le biais de méthodes appelées « duperie en ligne ». De telles firmes, affirme-t-il, peuvent souvent avoir mauvaise réputation en résultat de leurs activités. L’une des plus célèbres est Black Cube.

Toutefois, Ratson estime que de nombreuses entreprises de cyber-renseignement se fixent des lignes rouges en termes d’éthique et qu’elles ne les franchissent pas.

« Contrairement aux autres ministères en Israël, celui de la Défense a un bureau de régulation des exportations qui est fort. Les cyber-entreprises israéliennes font attention à ne pas travailler avec le ‘mauvais’ type de client et à ne pas se mettre, pour cela, dans une situation délicate vis-à-vis du ministère de la Défense », commente-t-il.

Toutefois, la « tentation est élevée », ajoute Ratson. « Parfois, quand il y a beaucoup d’argent sur la table, certaines entreprises ont pu tenter de fermer un peu les yeux sur l’éthique. Et c’est là qu’on a pu voir apparaître, dans les médias, une couverture internationale négative concernant des firmes de cyber-renseignement israéliennes. »

Greece’s refugees face healthcare crisis as Lesbos Covid-19 centre closes

Patients on island camps face long wait for specialist help and mental health services, while in Athens others are left destitute

In a fresh blow to refugees and migrants experiencing dire conditions in Greece, frontline medical charity Médecins San Frontières (MSF) on Thursday announced it has been forced to closed its Covid-19 isolation centre on Lesbos after authorities imposed fines and potential charges.

From the island of Lesbos to the Greek capital of Athens, asylum seekers and recognised refugees, some with serious medical conditions, are unable to access healthcare or see a doctor as treatments are disrupted by new regulations.

Asmaan* from Afghanistan is 10. For eight months she has lived in a makeshift tent with her family on the outskirts of the olive grove surrounding the Moria camp on Lesbos. She is one of more than 17,000 asylum seekers and refugees who have been living under lockdown here since 23 March.

Asmaan is a familiar face at the paediatric clinic run by MSF just outside the main gate. “She was vomiting, shivering through the nights and became apathetic,” said her mother Sharif*. “We really became alarmed when she was bleeding going to the toilet.” Diagnosed with an acute inflammation of her kidney, Asmaan was transferred to the island’s hospital. Sharif said staff wanted to send her daughter to the mainland for treatment. But the family cannot leave Lesbos until their asylum procedure is completed.

“Only highly severe cases can be transferred to the mainland,” Babis Anitsakis, director of infectious diseases at the hospital in Mytilene, told the Guardian. “This is also the case for the local population.” Such cases often involve a wait of two to three months in the camp before a transfer can be arranged, he said.

“We are confronted with patients from Moria daily who have sicknesses like tuberculosis or HIV. We are simply not equipped for these treatments. On top of it, we face tremendous translation difficulties. At night the medical staff work with a phone translation app to communicate with the patients, which can be disastrous in an emergency situation.”

For Giovanna Scaccabarozzi, a doctor with MSF on Lesbos, Asmaan’s case is typical of a system where refugees and asylum seekers find it increasingly difficult to access proper healthcare, often despite being in desperate need.

“Even survivors of torture and sexual violence are now left to themselves with no one to talk to and with no possibility to escape the highly re-traumatising space of Moria,” she said. The camp’s lockdown has meant fewer people have been able to attend MSF’s mental health clinic in Mytilene.

“From five to 10 appointments a day, we are now down to two to three a week in the torture clinic in town,” Scaccabarozzi said. Even when people reach the clinic, “it feels like treating someone with a burn while the person is still standing in the fire”.

The closure of the Covid-19 isolation unit on Thursday is down to the island’s authorities enforcing planning regulations, MSF said. “We are deeply disappointed that local authorities could not quash these fines and potential charges in the light of the global pandemic, despite some efforts from relevant stakeholders,” said Stephan Oberreit, MSF’s head of mission in Greece. “The public health system on Lesbos would simply be unable to handle the devastation caused by an outbreak in Moria – which is why we stepped in. Today we had to unwillingly close a crucial component of the Covid-19 response for Moria.”

Athens has become a beacon of hope for those living in the island’s overcrowded camps, but a recent policy change has seen people who arrive in Athens with refugee status left virtually destitute, many with ongoing healthcare issues.

The changes, which mean cash assistance and accommodation support end a month after refugee status is granted, affect around 11,000 refugees in Greece. MSF told the Guardian it is concerned that a number of patients face eviction and many refugees in Athens are sleeping on the streets as a result.

Hadla, a 59-year-old from Aleppo who had had multiple heart attacks, died within days of leaving the apartment she shared with her daughter Dalal in Athens. She had been asked to leave repeatedly. “I told them that my mother is terribly ill and showed them the medical files but they told us that they cannot do anything about it and that the decision had come from the ministry,” said Dalal.

Fearing eviction, Dalal took her mother to Schisto refugee camp on the outskirts of Athens, where her brother was staying. Two days later Hadla had another cardiac arrest and died. Dalal is still in the apartment with the rest of her family but continues to face eviction. “We have nothing and nowhere to go,” she said.

Kelly Moraiti, a nurse at the MSF daycare centre in Athens, said evictions put patients’ health at risk, particularly those living with diseases such as diabetes. “Someone who is facing a lifelong disease should have uninterrupted permanent access to treatment. They need to have access to a proper diet and a space to store medications, which should not be exposed to the sun; to be homeless with these conditions is extremely dangerous.”

MSF urgently called on the Greek government and the EU to help house refugees sleeping rough in Athens and to halt evictions of vulnerable people.

Some of the refugees on the streets of Athens are heavily pregnant women and new mothers as well as survivors of torture and sexual violence. Many have significant health conditions often complicated from their time in camps such as Moria.

The Greek migration ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Police arrested 12 people as thousands gathered Saturday evening outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem, his private home in Caesarea and junctions throughout the country in the latest wave of protests calling for his resignation.

Some 10,000 people protested near the prime minister’s official residence in Jerusalem and began marching toward the city center.

The protest and march were approved by the Israel Police, saying they will not tolerate any disturbances of the public order. Last week, five protesters were injured after being attacked by far-right counter demonstrators.

The police have also been accused of using excessive force against peaceful protesters, deploying riot control units in large numbers, as well as undercover officers, mounted units and water cannons.

The protest went on until after midnight, with several clashes erupting at around 1:30 A.M. after police forcibly removed protesters who remained in the area. A group of anti-government protesters refused to clear the area, chanting “An entire generation demands a future,” while sitting on the ground.

Hundreds also gathered outside Netanyahu’s private residence in Caesarea, under heavy police presence. One protester, a resident of the luxurious suburban town, called on Netanyahu to “Stay in Caesarea, we’d love to have you here. But you must vacate the official residence in Balfour.”

Former Knesset member for the Zionist Union Yael Cohen Paran was present at the protest in Caesarea. “This week we have seen incitement, incitement against organizers of the Crime Minister movement ... This, of all things, has brought everyone out of their houses, out of their indifference.” Paran added, “The people sitting in the Knesset don’t care. I was there. This is a disconnected government, they care only about themselves and need to go home. Our camp needs to renew itself, elections are coming soon.”

Across the country, thousands of activists representing the anti-corruption “Black Flag” movement congregated on some 260 of the country’s largest bridges and junctions for the sixth consecutive Saturday. Large police forces were deployed at all protest sites. Four men were detained near the southern towns of Ashkelon and Sderot for harassing and spitting on demonstrators. One was detained after throwing a stone at protesters in Haifa. Protesters in Tel Aviv said they were pepper sprayed by two people on a motorcycle.

Police have opened an investigation into reports of a car attempting to ram into protesters at a junction in Rehovot. According to two eyewitnesses, two women with a child in the back seat drove up on the sidewalk, turned around and attempted to ram into people again. “She cursed us, calling us loser leftists and threw bottles at as. She had a look of hatred in her eyes,” Ehud Geiger, who was protesting at the intersection said. “She can’t say she just drifted out of her lane, she had two tires up on the sidewalk."

Dana Miles, an activist for the the left-wing NGO Peace Now, said that Israelis must stand up against incitement. “This government-endorsed incitement terrifies me as someone who grew up here and knows exactly what it could lead to. It is our responsibility to stop a leadership that defends violence on the streets.”

Gali Shorer from Kibbutz Shefayim told Haaretz that this is her first time attending an anti-Netanyahu protest. “Suddenly it hit me in the gut: Where are we going? What kind of reality are my kids growing up to? I don’t know where this will lead, but I’m hoping that something different can happen here.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered at Charles Clore Park in Tel Aviv to protest the government’s failure to manage the economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis. Despite the police having only permitted a protest at the park, several dozens began marching through the city.

Yafa Ben Porat, 83, said this was her first time protesting "because all week I’ve been hurting over what the Knesset and lawmakers were doing. They’re liars, they’re frauds, Bibi [Netanyahu] has an empire in Caesarea, everyone needs to get up and join the protest ... We should be getting the money, not the parasites.”

Ronit, who lives in central Israel, brought her daughter and other relatives with her to the protest. She said: “I’ve brought the next generation with me to make sure that our rights are preserved also for the next generation. They should have a government that serves them and not the other way around.”

Dozens of people associated with Sheffi Paz, a far-right, anti-asylum seekers activist, arrived at the private residence of Supreme Court President Esther Hayut. They protested the High Court’s refusal to forbid the protests surrounding Netanyahu’s official residence following a petition by some the area’s residents.

Sheffi Paz was later arrested for allegedly spray-painting graffiti on near Hayut’s house.

Police Jerusalem District commander Doron Yedid left the protest after it became known that Jerusalem Affairs Minister Rafi Peretz tested positive for the coronaviorus. The two had met last week.

The Jerusalem protests have been taking place regularly for over a month near the prime minister’s residence, which has become the epicenter of the protest movement.

On Thursday, 14 members of the so-called La Familia, an extremist organization of fans of the Beitar Jerusalem soccer team, were arrested at an anti-Netanyahu protest on suspicion of attacking demonstrators. The detainees were released on Friday morning.
