To hear French game dev union STJV tell it, workers at Spiders – the studio behind flawed but consistently-ambitious role-playing games like Greedfall, Steelrising, and The Technomancer – are not having a good time right now. Today the union published an open letter to management alleging a litany of deal-breaking issues at the company, which has been signed by 44 out of 95 Spiders staffers. Next week the studio will go on strike – (partially) in Minecraft.

Founded in 2018 by Alex Connolly and James and Robbie Ferguson, and part of the blockchain company Immutable X, the studio develops NFT games. Immutable is credited with “pioneering the world’s first blockbuster NFT trading-card game” in Gods Unchained. It has also been involved with the development of upcoming mobile action-RPG, Guild of Guardians. 

In March, Immutable X partnered with retailer GameStop to establish a $100 million fund in Immutable tokens to assist those looking to create NFT technology and content. GameStop recently launched its own NFT marketplace, which came under fire when it had to remove an NFT referencing a man who fell to his death during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks from its marketplace.

NFTs are trying to make a place for themselves in gaming Right now, numerous NFT and blockchain companies are trying to push into the mainstream video game market, while some developers and publishers have also flirted with the controversial technology.

Quand on se balade dans le jeu, il est en effet possible de parler avec quelques “PNJ”, des personnages non joueurs qui redirigent vers des sites spécifiques.

Dans cette ville faite de briques, on peut ainsi visiter une mairie, où un personnage nous propose d’aller sur le site du ministère de l’Intérieur pour vérifier notre inscription sur les listes électorales. Au QG de campagne et au Palais des Congrès (en préparation d’un futur meeting virtuel ?), les personnages redirigent plutôt vers le site du candidat où celui des “Jeunes avec Macron”.

Mais en dehors de ces trois lieux et des quelques personnages qu’on y croise, le monde est plutôt vide et dépeuplé. Dans nos pérégrinations, nous avons croisé un hôpital où le personnel vante les mérites du Ségur de la Santé et quelques personnages de-ci de-là évoquant diverses aides de l’État, ou encore une école (qui met également en avant les réformes du quinquennat), une gendarmerie et une pharmacie.

Pour le reste, les rues sont pour l’instant assez vides (en dehors des nombreuses affiches de campagne) et les alentours ruraux totalement dépeuplés. Surtout, l’interaction est très limitée. En dehors des quelques PNJ dédiés à vanter le bilan d’Emmanuel Macron, il est impossible de faire autre chose dans ce jeu que de s’y balader.

Impossible de construire ou détruire. Deux actions qui sont pourtant à la base de la philosophie de Minecraft et qui auraient pu donner du dynamisme à cette opération de com’. Mais qui aurait très clairement été risquée pour la cohésion du serveur et des messages vantant le bilan d’Emmanuel Macron.

Après leur arrestation, le FSB avait trouvé dans leurs téléphones des vidéos où ils lançaient des cocktails Molotov sur un mur, ainsi qu’un « complot » visant à faire exploser un bâtiment virtuel du FSB qu’ils avaient construit sur Minecraft.

Starting this year, the Minerals Council of Australia — the mouthpiece for the mining industry in Australia — has gotten into video games. In August this year, it announced two games designed and built for the school curriculum.
