1927 fut une année d’agitation mondiale pour la défense de Sacco et Vanzetti. Nous aussi à Berlin et dans le reste de l’Allemagne, nous faisions notre possible pour obtenir la libération des deux anarchistes condamnés à mort. Je m’étais déjà occupé de procès politiques américains et ne pouvais me tenir à l’écart de ce cas. En 1920, j’avais publié à Stockholm Anarkist märtyrerna i Chicago (« Les martyrs anarchistes de Chicago ») qui racontait un assassinat légal dont peu de gens aujourd’hui encore ont entendu (...) This was not an academic issue in San Pedro in 1912. Local newspapers were reporting the impending arrival of European immigrants recruited by the stevedore companies to, in essence, depress the wages of existing dockworkers. With IWW members severely underemployed, it is easy to imagine that the local union might have expressed concern—might even have agreed with the AF of L’s exclusionary immigrant policy. That was not the case. [...] Then Hill took the soapbox [...] “Now boys, the reactionary subsidized press is telling us that they will soon be bringing shiploads of four thousand at forty dollars a head from Europe. Now the question is, what are you going to do: are you going to the dock and sneer at them and say, ’here is another load of damn ignorant foreigners to take our jobs’, or are you going to try and make friends with them and invite them to our IWW hall?”
