In case you missed it during our live coverage on Friday, #rosetta's impact site has been named Sais. Mission Manager Patrick Martin announced the name of the impact site after contact with the #comet's surface was confirmed and the mission declared complete. He said: “The Rosetta Stone was originally located in Sais, and we shall name the impact point as such so we can finally say that Rosetta has come home to Sais.” The mission was named after the Rosetta Stone, itself so named because it was found in a town called Rashid (Rosetta), having thought to have been moved there from a temple in a town called Sais. Rosetta’s last image of the comet surface is highlighted today as Space #Science Image of the Week.

We just received this image from the OSIRIS wide-angle camera, taken at 02:17 UT at the comet. It shows the target impact region just coming in to view in the lower left –look for the distinctive shape of the Ma’at pits. It was taken from a distance of about 15.5 km; the image scale is about 1.56 m/pixel and the image measures 3.2 km across.

Collision manoeuvre complete

Rosetta has completed its final manoeuvre and is now on a collision course with Comet 67P/C-G. A small thruster #burn starting 20:48:11 UTC and lasting 208 seconds has set the craft on course towards its final destination. The spacecraft’s navigation cameras will soon take a set of five images to confirm that the spacecraft is on target, and to refine the predicted impact time. These are expected to be downlinked by 0300 UT / 0500 CEST and we therefore expect that the next report, with the updated time and at least one of those NAVCAM images, will be around 0400 UT / 0600 CEST.
