      Building an anti-fascist culture post-Brexit

A vast amount has already been said about ‘Brexit’ and the general climate of nationalism and xenophobia in which the vote took place. We want to concentrate on where we can go from here. Between rising fascism on the one hand, and despair on the other, we think it’s essential we build a culture of anti-fascism based on solidarity and autonomy. Solidarity here means taking action to support each other against those who seek to impose their authoritarian and racist ideal of a uniform society. Autonomy means unlearning our habit of looking to leaders for solutions, and taking the initiative to organise for ourselves.

Why Amnesty Has Launched an Emergency Campaign on Racism

Of course, bigotry existed before this referendum, but undeniably the campaign was marked by divisive, toxic rhetoric as well as a failure from political leaders to condemn it and it seems clear that we are now reaping the referendum rhetoric whirlwind.

Fuelled by years of hostile rhetoric, coupled with divisive campaigns, we are now seeing racism and xenophobia on the rise on our streets and in our communities.

True scale of London immigration raids revealed

Journalist Philip Kleinfeld has uncovered an 80% rise in the number of immigration raids in London over the last five years. Data released to Kelinfeld by the Home Office under the Freedom of Information Act breaks down raids in the capital by individual postcodes. It shows a total of 19,853 raids — almost 11 a day — from 2010 to 2015.

How foreigners became the convenient scapegoat of the referendum campaign

The Brexit campaign was never really about the EU or even immigration. It was about foreigners. Foreigners became a scapegoat for all the things that are not working properly – including in the NHS and in schools. But the government could not have confronted this use of xenophobia, writes Rodney Barker. Doing so would be to admit that these failures were not because of immigration but because of its own policies.

Racial violence and the Brexit state

Through a detailed examination of cases on the IRR’s unique database it establishes a link between the language and behaviour of perpetrators of such violence, the rhetoric and policy pronouncements of politicians over recent years and the stigmatising frameworks of the media.

The seeds of post-Brexit racial violence lie in government policy

Racist attacks are condemned by politicians who stop short of examining their complicity. New research suggests policy ignites hatred.

      Racism, Crisis, Brexit

This article offers a conjunctural analysis of the financial and political crisis within which Brexit occurred with a specific attentiveness to race and racism. Brexit and its aftermath have been overdetermined by racism, including racist violence. We suggest that the Leave campaign secured its victory by bringing together two contradictory but inter-locking visions. The first comprises an imperial longing to restore Britain’s place in the world as primus inter pares that occludes any coming to terms with the corrosive legacies of colonial conquest and racist subjugation. The second takes the form of an insular, Powellite narrative of island retreat from a “globalizing” world, one that is no longer recognizably “British”. Further, the article argues that an invisible driver of the Brexit vote and its racist aftermath has been a politicization of Englishness. We conclude by outlining some resources of hope that could potentially help to negotiate the current emergency.
