You probably have a good idea of who the so-called “alt-right” are: a group of white supremacists and nationalists, bound up by a fiery loathing of “political correctness,” “cultural Marxism,” and those pesky “social-justice warriors.” You might have also seen the articles that tell us to stop using that term and call them out for the fascist, neo-Nazis they are. In the wake of the “Unite the Right” protests in Charlottesville last weekend, these calls have only become more urgent. The phrase has become a catch-all for people like Richard Spencer, the head of the white supremacist National Policy Institute, and Milo Yiannopoulos, the online troll and provocateur who recently fell from mainstream conservative grace. But there’s a lot more people it catches in its (inter)net.
The alt-right isn’t one group. They don’t have one coherent identity. Rather, they’re a loose collection of people from disparate backgrounds who would never normally interact: bored teenagers, gamers, men’s rights activists, conspiracy theorists and, yes, white nationalists and neo-Nazis. But thanks to the internet, they’re beginning to form a cohesive group identity. And I have the data to prove it.

L’« alt-right » est plus qu’une étiquette rajeunie pour l’extrême droite anglophone : c’est un agrégat de cinq grandes mouvances distinctes. Telle est la conclusion partagée par Tim Squirrel, doctorant en science et technologie à l’université d’Edimbourg (Ecosse) et membre du laboratoire de recherche Alt-Right Open Intelligence Initiative, dans un billet publié le 18 août sur le site américain Quartz. Pour y parvenir, le chercheur a conduit une vaste analyse lexicale sur The_Donald, principale sous-section « alt-right » du forum Reddit avec ses 450 000 abonnés.

L’« alt-right » telle qu’elle s’exprime sur The_Donald s’avère ainsi constituée de cinq grandes catégories de participants bien distincts :
• les shitposters de 4chan, ou purs trolls. Ils sont dans la provocation sans limite et utilisent de manière intensive les termes « kek » (sorte de dieu du politiquement incorrect) et « Pepe » (leur grenouille symbole) ;
• les anti-progressive gamers ou joueurs antigauche. Dans le sillon du #GamerGate, mouvement antiféministe né en 2014 qui constitue l’un des leurs mots-clés, ils luttent depuis 2014 contre la diffusion des idées féministes, de défense des droits LGBT et du mouvement Black Live Matters dans les jeux vidéo, et dénigrent ceux qu’ils appellent avec mépris les « SJW » (combattants de la justice sociale) ;
• les men rights activists ou militants masculinistes. Ils s’opposent aux féministes autant qu’ils cherchent à revaloriser une certaine vision de la virilité, à travers toute une échelle de valeurs des hommes en fonction de leurs performances comme séducteurs (ils appellent « alpha » les hommes et séducteurs jugés dominants, « omega » les moins musclés, etc.) ;
• les anti-globalization. Sur des schémas souvent simplistes, conspirationnistes et antisémites, recherchent des « élites » à combattre (comme « George Soros », « the etablishment », ou la « globalist scum », la vermine mondialiste) ;
• les suprémacistes blancs. Ce sont militants actifs de la défense d’une supposée « identité occidentale » chrétienne, notamment face à l’islam et la charia, deux de leurs thèmes fétiches. Ils idéalisent, par ailleurs, les Croisades.

We’re witnessing the radicalization of young white men through the medium of frog memes. In order to see it, all you need to do is look at the words coming out of their mouths. The alt-right isn’t yet united, but it soon will be.
