Stephen Walter’s highly detailed, hand-drawn #plans of the metropolis record long-forgotten histories and recent developments with a native Londoner’s critical eye. Here we show some of his remarkable maps from his book The Island, published by Prestel

Super ton article @freakonometrics !

An imaginary town becomes real, then not - true story
In the 1930s (I learned from Frank Jacobs’ excellent blog, Strange Maps), there was no town on that stretch between Rockland and nearby Beaverkill — just a dirt road. This wasn’t an important or often visited place, which made it a perfect spot for what’s called a “paper town,” or a map “trap.”

QGIS.
Euh... Ah bah mince, ça me revient pas. #hum :D
The Limits of Alternative Africas

Hard on the heels of an anti-climactic election season in the US punctuated by myopic views of the world and cataclysmic what-ifs, the resurgence of #Nikolaj_Cyon’s counterfactual map of Africa circulating on the web last week was a welcome relief from realpolitik run amok. Diorama City Maps
Photographs by, and interview with
Sohei Nishino
If anything, we are over-mapped today. Anyone with a screen can, in a matter of seconds, hone in on a country, a city, a street, a house, a doorway. It’s magic of a kind, I suppose, but then why does it so quickly wear off? Where is the wonder we feel when looking at medieval #maps, when cartographers felt justified in filling terra incognita with imaginary islands and two headed-men?...Nishino’s giddy maps remind us that cities, for all their giddy chaos, are at the core, miraculous human achievements.
—William A. Ewing
Rapid cultural and economic development has unleashed a process of amplification and accumulation within cities. I walk through cities, camera in hand, capturing fragmentary views, some from above, some from below, that I then combine, one by one, in accordance with my memories, arranging them into a map that portrays all the singular aspects of the place. The result is quite different from the denotative expression of a map; it uses photographs (single #35mm frames) of concrete objects or shapes as units to recreate a geographical representation, expressing the city through human #memories and #images.

High-Speed Stock Traders Turn to Laser Beams - WSJ

As high-speed stock traders push to trade ever faster, their newest move involves harnessing a technology that U.S. military jets use to communicate as they soar across the sky: lasers.
In March, a small Chicago communications company plans to switch on an array of laser devices linking the New York Stock Exchange’s data center in Mahwah, N.J., with the Nasdaq Stock Market’s data center in another New Jersey community, Carteret.
The lasers, perched atop high-rise apartment buildings, towers and office complexes along the 35-mile stretch between the communities, are the first phase of a grid intended to link nearly all U.S. stock exchanges this way, zipping market data and rapid-fire trades.
It is the latest salvo in the “race to zero,” traders’ term for their efforts to whittle away the difference between the speed their orders travel at and the speed of light. Zero, the point at which that difference would disappear, has become a kind of holy grail to computerized traders, for whom nanoseconds—billionths of a second—can spell the difference between profit and loss in their algorithm-driven trades.
In recent years, so-called high-frequency trading firms, which account for about half of U.S. stock trading, have adopted first custom-built fiber-optic cables, then microwave and later millimeter-wave transmissions. Networks built on all three technologies operate today, tying together exchanges around the U.S. Internationally, fiber-optic cables laid across the oceans link America’s markets with Europe’s and Asia’s.

Laser beams and microwave dishes are the latest weapons in an arms race to shave milliseconds off dealing times in the shadowy world of high-speed, computerized financial trading.
Traders, who make money by exploiting tiny, lightning-fast price changes on exchanges, are now targeting Europe and Asia after skirmishing in the United States.
The first microwave connections between London and Frankfurt have been launched, cutting the time to send a trade by about 40 percent compared with optic fiber cables.
On ne sort pas de l’histoire de Rotschild et Waterloo (tiens, d’ailleurs, c’est pas loin, et sur la même ligne droite,…)

– Areas suffering from severe fog and rain
– Moving buildings
– Pole mounting fixtures
– Line of sight distance more than 2km
