Nature’s editors don’t say whether there is a substantive case to be made that Sims’s or Parran’s scientific achievements merit these honors in spite of their ghastlier deeds. You can understand why they’d be gun-shy about making that case. For one, the two figures’ sins are not private indiscretions, incidental to their professional reputations. Their treatment of black men and women as subhuman subjects was core to their work. They profited from these experiments, and in the field’s highest currency: scientific prestige. And their actions are not dead history. They are continuous with the racism that infects American society, to the present day. They helped construct a system of medical #apartheid, in which black people were allowed to serve as subjects in the experiments that nudged #medicine into modernity, but were denied the fruits of those experiments.

Science’s ethos of self-correction should apply to how it thinks about its own history, too.

A letter written from the east and addressed to this office asks if we can give any information as to the whereabouts of Big Nose George. We cannot give any definite information, but the last seen of him he was standing on a flour barrel near a telegraph pole, and a man with a stopwatch was standing near him and preparing to kick the flour barrel from under him. It is thought that the man with abnormal nasal protuberance has gone somewhere by telegraph.

Following the execution, local physicians, John E. Osborne, Thomas Maghee, and Lillian Nelson, the first woman physician in Wyoming, conducted an autopsy for the purpose of determining whether there were any visible criminal abnormalities in Big Nose’s brain. In examining the brain it was necessary to cut off the skull cap which Dr. Nelson later used as an ashtray and doorstop before it found repose in the Union Pacific Museum in Omaha. Dr. Osborne had Big Nose’s hide tanned and made into a medical bag and a pair of shoes now in the Carbon County Museum, photo below right. The rest of Big Nose’s remains were kept in a whiskey barrel which after several years was buried near Dr. Osborne’s medical office.

The death of Big Nose George faded into history over the years until May 11, 1950, when construction workers unearthed a whiskey barrel filled with bones while working on the Rawlins National Bank on Cedar Street in Rawlins. Inside the barrel was a skull with the top sawed off, a bottle of vegetable compound, and the shoes said to have been made from Parrott’s thigh flesh.[18] Dr. Lillian Heath, then in her eighties, was contacted and her skull cap was sent to the scene. It was found to fit the skull in the barrel perfectly, and DNA testing later confirmed the remains were those of Big Nose George. Today the shoes made from the skin of Big Nose George are on permanent display at the Carbon County Museum in Rawlins, together with the bottom part of the outlaw’s skull and Big Nose George’s earless death mask.[9] The shackles used during the hanging of the outlaw, as well as the skull cap, are on show at the Union Pacific Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. The medicine bag made from his skin has never been found.

Wäre es aber nicht einfacher, wenn Ärzte gleich so reden würden, dass jeder sie versteht? Nicht unbedingt. Ärzte bedienen sich einer Fachsprache, wie andere Berufsgruppen auch. Auf diese Weise kann man auch komplizierte Sachverhalte kurz und präzise darstellen, Missverständnisse und Fehlinterpretationen sind ausgeschlossen - im medizinischen Bereich kann das lebenswichtig sein. Diagnosen, Dokumentationen und der Austausch mit den Kollegen müssen vor allem eines sein: eineindeutig. Das kann natürlich den Nebeneffekt haben, dass Nichteingeweihten der Zugang zu den Informationen verwehrt bleibt.

Die von ihm postulierte Tendenz zur „guten Gestalt“ war nach seinen Schriften nicht nur eine universelle Tendenz, „gestaltfremdes“ aus der persönlichen Wahrnehmung zu eliminieren. Vielmehr war die von Sander postulierte Gestaltschließung auch dort ein quasi naturgegebenes Phänomen, wo etwa die „gute Gestalt“ des deutsch-arischen Volkes alles „gestaltfremde“ (wie etwa Juden, Kommunisten, Homosexuelle etc.) abzutöten tendierte. So befürwortet Friedrich Sander die „Ausschaltung des parasitisch wuchernden Judentums“ und die Zwangssterilisierung von Deutschen mit „minderwertigem Erbgut“ als Ausdrucke eines „Willens zur reinen Gestalt deutschen Wesens“ (Nationalsozialistisches Bildungswesen, 1937).

Sander (und sein Institut) wurde mit Untersuchungen über visuelle Aktualgenese bekannt, die in einer Stufen-Differenzierung des Perzepts bei kontinuierlicher Reizsteigerung bestand. Weder Krueger noch Sander versuchten, die Abfolge der entstehenden Gestaltqualitäten irgendwelchen bedingenden strukturellen Gegebenheiten zuzuordnen. Sowohl der aktualgenetische Forschungsansatz als auch die Strukturtheorie sind der Vergessenheit anheimgefallen und werden im ’mainstream’ nicht mehr diskutiert.

Lediglich die Arbeiten Otto Klemms (1884-1939) und seiner Mitarbeiter und Promovenden zur menschlichen Motorik konnten sich im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs bis in die Gegenwart hinein halten und werden mit einer durchgängigen Kontinuität in der Arbeits- und Bewegungswissenschaft zitiert. Sie basieren zwar auf dem Gedankengut der Ganzheitspsychologie, enthalten sich jedoch weitestgehend irrationalistischer Überhöhungen und ideologischer Verfügbarmachung im Rahmen des Nationalsozialismus. Die Erkenntnisse sowie die äußerst sorgfältige und für die damalige Zeit vorbildhafte Methodik beanspruchen auch heute noch Gültigkeit.[2]

Zudem erfahren die Arbeiten Felix Kruegers, nach 1945 lange Zeit ohne bedeutsamen Widerhall in der Psychologie, aktuell eine zögerliche Neubewertung im Zusammenhang mit der psychotherapeutischen Praxis. Insbesondere seine Ausführungen zur Gefühlstheorie und seine Betonung der Ganzheitlichkeit sind in diesem Kontext durchaus attraktive Konzepte einer heilenden Arbeit am und mit dem Menschen.

Das Computermodell dafür hat der Biologe vom Berliner Max-Planck-Institut für molekulare Genetik bereits entwickelt. Mit dem Programm lassen sich die biologischen Vorgänge in den Zellen der Patienten simulieren und vorhersagen, wie sie auf verschiedene Medikamente reagieren werden.

„Genauso wie ich mich bei einem Flugsimulator darauf verlasse, dass er sich wie das echte Flugzeug verhält, muss der virtuelle Patient genauso reagieren wie der wirkliche Patient“, beschreibt Lehrach seine Methode. Dafür wird das Modell unter anderem mit Erbgut-Daten der Patienten und ihres Tumors gefüttert. Ersten Analysen zufolge wirkte die so gewählte Therapie in 80 Prozent der Fälle. Zum Vergleich: Heutige Medikamente wirken im Schnitt lediglich bei einem Drittel der Patienten.

Außerhalb des Körpers befindet sich nur noch die tragbare Stromversorgung, die über ein Kabel mit dem Herz verbunden ist. Das Kunstherz von Carmat entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem europäischen Luftfahrt- und Rüstungskonzern EADS und dem Chirurgen Alain Carpentier. Er hatte vor Jahren maßgeblich die Herzklappen-Chirurgie entwickelt.

William Cohn, Herzchirurg an der Texas Heart Institution in Houston, ist von dem Kunstherz beeindruckt: „Es ist ein brillantes Gerät.“ Er mache sich aber noch über dessen Größe und mechanische Haltbarkeit Gedanken. Bei 100.000 Herzschlägen pro Tag hielten heutige Kunstherzen nur ein paar Jahre, sagt Cohn. Je mehr bewegliche Teile sie enthalten, desto größer ist die Gefahr, dass sie irgendwann versagen.

For example, this is from a September 11, 2009 cable by Kristie Kenney, then the United States Ambassador to the Philippines (currently Ambassador to Thailand).

“Prescription medication prices in the Philippines are the second highest in Asia (next to Japan), in a country where about a third of the population subsists below the official poverty line. In this instance, some multinational companies failed to recognize that cheaper medicine for the masses is an emotional and political issue.”
