Belle Property Randwick selling agent Shane Vincent said Garrett and his wife Doris, while nowhere in sight, were very happy with the result.

“He’s very happy; it was well above the reserve. They’ve bought another property and they’ll be moving to there in just over a month’s time so having the peace of mind knowing they’ve already sold here — they’re very happy,” Mr Vincent said.

The three-bedroom, two-storey terrace at Gordon St had initial price expectations of more than $1.05 million.

Bought by Garrett in 2010 during his time serving in Parliament, the property was still the Sydney base home to the former Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts, his wife and their three daughters until recently.

Western Australia ready to dice with uranium & radiation | The Stringer

Western Australia has four uranium mining projects in the advanced stages leading to their establishment – Kintyre, Mulga Rock, Wiluna and Yeelirrie.

For now, they are mostly by the communities – Homelands – of First Peoples. The communities are being told that jobs will be waiting for them at the uranium sites. The uranium sites are being sold as world’s best practice – you know, former nuclear disarmament and anti-uranium campaigner, Peter Garrett as a politician did an about face and sold Australian uranium mines as “world’s best practice” with “in-situ filtration”. However, despite Mr Garrett’s missed opportunity as a politician to make a difference, mining uranium is scary for many Australians, especially since the Fukishima catastrophe, despite the mainstream media skilfully reducing news coverage since the disaster. Australians do not want to hear people are living by uranium mines. This is part of why the Western Australian Government wants to close down Homelands and evict people off their Country. If they can get rid of the Martu from nearby Kintyre then there will be less controversy.

Peter Garrett — Labor Member for Kingsford Smith, NSW, and Minister for School Education

“I will not come into the House and quote my own song lyrics, that I will not take the opportunities that are afforded to people who have celebrity status and use that to advance either the causes of the government or the political party that I have come here as a member of …”

“Let’s just face it — it is a no-win situation being environment minister. Fifty per cent of the Australian population wanted me to do much more and the other 50% did not want me to do anything at all. So there we were in the middle.”

Solidarity Online | Why Peter Garrett lost his way
    http://www.solidarity.net.au/marxist-theory/why-peter-garrett-lost-his-way

Peter Garrett’s collapse into conservatism has been not just quick, but abject. The Environment Minister’s credibility is not in tatters—it has evaporated completely. David Glanz looks at what happened

Just two years ago Garrett told the ALP conference: “I visited the shrine at Hiroshima. I know the history of Maralinga. And I’ve witnessed the struggle at Jabiluka. I have long been opposed to uranium mining, and I remain opposed to it. I am unapologetic about this. In fact, I am proud of it.”

Yet last month, the man who used to belt out “And the company takes what the company wants/And nothing’s as precious as a hole in the ground” approved the Four Mile uranium mine in South Australia.Peter Garrett\’s capitulation is an example of the failure of the strategy of the left chaning Labor

Garrett co-founded the Nuclear Disarmament Party and later headed the Australian Conservation Foundation. As late as 2007 he was prepared to say: “I’ve always maintained and indeed committed myself to the notion that Australia should be nuclear free—that our country is as far into nuclear activities as it ever should be.”

How can someone who has dedicated a lifetime to a cause make such a U-turn and so quickly? The question is important because it is not just about Garrett.

Lessons of Peter Garrett’s evolution: from radical activist to Australian Labor politician - World Socialist Web Site

    5 October 2004

Workers and young people can draw important lessons from the decision of former Midnight Oil singer and anti-nuclear and green activist Peter Garrett to stand as the candidate for the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the Sydney seat of Kingsford Smith. Especially for those looking toward the Greens as an alternative, Garrett’s evolution is a timely reminder of the necessity of carefully examining political program and perspectives, rather than simply taking as good coin radical appearances and phraseology.
    ...
In 1984, Garrett entered politics as the main public spokesman for the newly-formed Nuclear Disarmament Party (NDP). In the federal election of December 1984, he stood as the NDP’s Senate candidate for New South Wales and won 9.6 percent of the vote. Nationally, the NDP polled 650,000 votes and NDP leader Jo Vallentine was elected to the Senate from Western Australia.

Twenty years on, Garrett has stressed that he will submit to Labor Party discipline on all issues. He has publicly renounced the positions with which he was most identified—closing the US-controlled Pine Gap spy station and banning uranium mining.
