Une histoire orale de la mixtape en France

La cassette audio a été un support indispensable dans la diffusion du hip-hop à travers le monde. Leur avènement respectif est survenu quasiment simultanément. À la fin des années 1980, le rôle du DJ redevient prépondérant aux États-Unis avec les avancées ingénieuses de Cash Money, Kid Capri ou Jazzy Jeff. Avec eux, un support promotionnel d’un nouveau genre, la mixtape, se développe alors sur cassette audio. Considérée au départ comme une simple démo de DJ échangée de main en main, elle va devenir de plus en plus sophistiquée et remplir des rôles divers, entre vecteur de freestyles de rue, démonstrations techniques et pêche aux exclusivités. Dans l’histoire du rap, certaines mixtapes sont plus importantes que des albums.

La France a aussi connu cette spécificité avec des DJ très productifs à la technicité hors pair mais aussi des passionnés qui ont développé tout un univers autour de ce média pour en faire un trésor recherché. Complètement artisanale à ses débuts, la mixtape en France va se professionnaliser jusqu’à devenir un véritable business avec ses règles, ses héros, ses ratés et ses légendes. Voici son histoire.
