The $200 #Firefox mechanical keyboard sold out
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/09/firefox-keyboard-cherry-switches
Love Firefox enough to drop $200 on a branded keyboard? Tough, it’s sold it. It’s a full-sized, 108-key mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches, and has a unique keycap colour scheme and branding: a Firefox logo on the super/meta key and new Firefox mascot Kit on Esc. It works wired, via Bluetooth or 2.4g wireless. “Clean, clicky and finished in Firefox colors”, reads the #Mozilla Store description, “this is a keyboard that looks good, feels better and sneaks in a little personality where you least expect it” (unaware the personality is exactly where one would expect it: on the keys). #Firefox’s new tab page adds AI-powered daily crossword widget
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/07/firefox-new-widgets-crossword
More widgets are coming to Firefox’s New Tab page, including an interactive crossword puzzle powered by the AI #News reader Particle. The mini crossword game is updated daily, with puzzles based around recent content Particle‘s AI has ingested and summarised that day, and links to articles you can read to help deduce crossword answers. You click on a square to activate the row or column (clicking on it again switches between “Across” and “Down”). You read the clue at the bottom, and then you type in your answer. Use the hint button if you get stuck. If you just want […] You’re reading Firefox’s new tab page adds AI-powered daily crossword widget, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu. #Firefox 153 offers built-in container tabs, rounded corners + more
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/07/firefox-153-new-containers-feature
Mozilla has released Firefox 153 with built-in #Containers, QR code generation and more quick actions in the address bar. This is the final “monthly” stable release before #Mozilla moves to a faster release cadence, putting out new stable versions of Firefox every two weeks. On an unrelated note, Firefox has resumed activity on X (formerly Twitter) after a year of no activity. Like all updates, you can get this one for Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as for Android and iOS (mobile versions have different features and are not covered in this post). Étude Mozilla : comment Windows sabote Firefox et vos choix de navigation
▻https://goodtech.info/etude-mozilla-deceptive-design-windows-microsoft-edge-firefox
Firefox for #Android adding Google Integrity checks
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/06/mozilla-firefox-android-google-play-integrity
Mozilla is added support for Google’s Play Integrity API, known for blocking users of custom ROMs from accessing banking apps, to Firefox for Android. According to a resolved issue in #Mozilla’s public tracker, a new lib-integrity-googleplay library has been added to Firefox’s Android codebase. It requests a Play Integrity token, which is then passed to Mozilla’s MLPA (Machine Learning Proxy) server. The token gates access to Firefox’s server-side AI tools, like Smart Window, for rate-limiting purposes. It means Mozilla can ensure that only unmodified, Play-installed copies of Firefox on Google-certified devices can use its compute resources. Per documentation, developers can: “…call the […] You’re reading Firefox for Android adding Google Integrity checks, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu. (…)

Thunderbolt is an open-source ‘AI client’ from #Mozilla’s for-profit arm
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/04/mozilla-thunderbolt-ai-client
Thunderbolt is a new open source AI client from the Mozilla-owned MZLA Technologies aimed at enterprises who want to run self-hosted chatbots on their own infrastructure. MZLA Technologies is the for-profit subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation that develops and maintains the Thunderbird email client. It says Thunderbolt was created with the support of a grant from Mozilla. Terrible name aside (and skipping over the fact that Intel owns a trademark for ‘Thunderbolt’), the AI MZLA Technologies used to write their press release describes Thunderbolt as a “sovereign AI client” that lets organisations run and control AI infrastructure. Companies can pick whichever AI model they fancy, be […] You’re reading Thunderbolt is an open-source ‘AI client’ from Mozilla’s for-profit arm, a blog post (…)
#Firefox 149 adds built-in free #VPN with 50GB monthly data
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/03/firefox-adding-a-free-vpn
Mozilla has announced that a free, built-in VPN is coming to Firefox later this month. Firefox’s free VPN will offer 50 gigabytes of monthly data, which is pretty generous for a browser-based VPN. A #Mozilla account is required to make use of it, which isn’t a hardship (they’re free), but is a point of friction some may wish to know upfront. This is not a full-device VPN; Firefox VPN only protects traffic inside of the browser, not data sent outside. It won’t rival the flexibility and security benefits of a full-featured VPN, like server switching to access geo-restricted streaming services […] You’re reading Firefox 149 adds built-in free VPN with 50GB monthly data, a blog post from OMG! New #Firefox logo coming? #Mozilla’s socials suggest so…
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/03/is-firefox-about-to-get-a-new-logo
Some (not exactly subtle) changes on Firefox’s official social media accounts indicate that the browser is about to get a new logo – or a reputation for attention seeking. Avatars on the browser’s official social media accounts have changed from the familiar Firefox logo to an empty purple ‘globe’, which is the centre of the normal logo, sans the orange, flamed-tailed fox usually wrapped around. If you don’t quite see it, this animated reel shared on the Firefox Instagram account makes it much easier to see: Mozilla hasn’t explicitly said “a new logo is coming”, but it acknowledged its fox-less […] You’re reading New Firefox logo coming? I tried #Firefox’s new AI ‘Smart Window’ in a beta build
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/03/firefox-smart-window-hands-on
Firefox’s new AI-powered ‘Smart Window’ feature is taking shape in development builds – I gave it a hands on in the latest v149.0b7 beta (on macOS). Although Firefox 148 added an AI Switch, #Mozilla is all-in on AI in now it’s part of its double-bottom line and a way to generate money. Firefox’s upcoming Smart Window is key to this, as it makes AI the primary interface for browsing. What follows is a hands-on with Smart Window in Firefox 149 beta, how it works, how it’s activated and why its ‘memory’ feature gave me the ick. #Firefox Nova – our first look at the browser’s big redesign
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/03/firefox-nova-redesign
A new-look Firefox is on the way, with #Mozilla designers working on a ‘Nova’ redesign that introduces more curves and colour. First reported by tech blogger Söeren Hentzschel, who published several internal #design mockups, Nova gives Firefox a more rounded appearance: tabs and the address bar sport uniform radii, and sit in a segmented, floating island UI element. Everything nestles neatly. Elements like hover effects in the menu and parts of the New Tab Page are similarly rounded. If you look closely at the image above you’ll also spot a set of refreshed icons that (surprise!) are also less angular […] You’re reading Firefox Nova – our first look at the browser’s big redesign, a blog post from OMG! #Firefox 148 Released with AI Kill Switch + More
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/02/firefox-148-released-ai-kill-switch
The Firefox 148 update sees its stable release today, bringing with it a much-request ‘AI kill switch’ to easily disable all AI-powered features within the browser. #Mozilla has said future updates to the browser will not re-enable AI features once disabled. Given that Mozilla now measures its success by how much revenue it makes from AI features in its products, Firefox included, that’s a reassuring stance. To disable AI features in Firefox go to Settings > AI Controls. Slide the ‘Block AI Enhancements’ toggle to turn off ChatGPT and other chatbots in the sidebar, AI link previews, the (supposedly) smart […] You’re reading Firefox 148 Released with AI Kill Switch + More, a blog post from OMG! #Firefox is Getting a New AI Browsing Mode
▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/11/firefox-ai-window-browsing-mode-coming
Mozilla is ebullient on the benefits AI can bring to users of the Firefox web browser, and already offers (as you may have been bugged by callouts to) a sidebar for interacting with chatbots, AI summaries, and AI-powered tab grouping. Now it’s going further, adding a new, dedicated “AI Window” mode to Firefox. Firefox AI Window is described by #Mozilla as “a new, intelligent and user-controlled space we’re building in Firefox that lets you chat with an AI assistant and get help while you browse, all on your terms.” “With AI Window, you have the option to opt in to […] You’re reading Firefox is Getting a New AI Browsing Mode, a blog post from OMG! Firefox’s lack of profile management has been a long-standing irritation for many of its users, but #Mozilla — in a bout of ‘maybe users aren’t wrong for wanting that after all’ feature gap filling of late — is finally adding one. Mozilla has announced it will begin rolling out profile management in Firefox from 14 October 2025 (which is next week at the time I write this). #Mozilla Axes its ‘Deepfake’ AI Detector Add-On

Mozilla is axing another project that was a perfect fit for a company whose founding mission is to make the web better. Next week, on June 26 2025, the Fakespot Deep Fake Detector extension, which lets users vet content to gauge is it was more likely to be made by a human or generated for a human, will stop working.
