Lebanese security forces clashed with protesters south of the capital on Friday, as demonstrators sought to keep a toxic landfill closed, local media reported. Protesters have been staging a sit-in near the Naamed-Ain Drafil landfill since last week, blocking access to the site in an attempt to attract public attention on the environmental and health impact of the landfill, which hosts an estimated 15 million tons of trash. Lebanese Internal Security Forces arrested one of the leading activists, Ajwad Ayyach, on charges of inciting protests. read more
