It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the loss of Neil Smith, Marxist geographer and comrade in arms. Here’s something from the archives to remember him by. Neil passed away in the early morning hours of September 29th, 2012. Neil was a brilliant theoretician and an inspiration to so many. His absence will be deeply felt by communities of leftist political resistance and his brilliant ideas will influence our lives and work for many years to come. He was loved by so many.

Neil Smith was a Professor of Anthropology and Geography and the Director of the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the Graduate Center department of the City University of New York.

In 1984, Neil collaborates with Paper Tiger and reads USA Today, America’s only national newspaper and the one with the largest circulation. The newspaper’s agenda of fostering national unity and consciousness through the dissemination of endless and useless trivia is analyzed. Finding the lowest common cultural denominator erases all tensions within American society and forwards the idea that the only difference between Americans are geographical anecdotes and the local non-happenings that fill up the newspaper’s pages.
