The Dutch disease
Coming ahead of the French presidential #elections in April and the German national election in September, last Wednesday’s election in the #Netherlands (won handily by the center-right VVD of Prime Minister Mark Rutte) was seen as a test of populist right-wing sentiment in Europe. More importantly, it was also a referendum about left #POLITICS in…
The whole world was watching for the inauguration of the 45th president of the United States: Donald J. Trump. Because we realize it’s better for us to get along, we decided to introduce our tiny country to him. In a way that will probably appeal to him the most.
Great Barrier Reef and the Amazon Rainforest Among Outstanding Natural Sites Under Threat from French Multinationals
Half of World Heritage sites are currently threatened by industrial development, and the oil and mining sectors pose a particular threat. So many invaluable sites and #biodiversity sanctuaries face being wiped off the map just because we are unable to do anything about our voracious model of development. Several French transnational corporations are among those involved in projects that could herald the end of these exceptional sites. Some of the sites facing destruction include national (...)

Former Dutch PM calls Benjamin Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ who should be tried in The Hague
Dries van Agt said the Israeli leader should go ‘straight to the international criminal court’
Harry Cockburn | 6 sept 2016
Former Dutch prime minister Dries van Agt has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal who should be tried in the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
His comments come ahead of Mr Netanyahu’s visit to The Netherlands this week.
Speaking to Dutch television channel NPO 1, Mr van Agt said: “There’s a war criminal coming to this country.
“The occupation and expansion… building of settlements, of occupied territory, this is according to the Rome Statute, which is… the statute on which the international criminal court is based, in so many words, a war crime.
In a rambling interview, the 85-year old, who was prime minister of The Netherlands for five years until 1982, added: “So why should we receive someone who continues with such things?
“We could have sent him straight away to the international criminal court – that would have been better.”
Mr Van Agt has been highly critical of Israel in recent years, despite supporting the state during his years in office.
In 2012, he caused controversy after saying Jews should have built a state in Germany rather than in the Middle East.
Dutch pro-Israel group Likoed Nederland said in a statement on Monday: “Van Agt merits no serious podium”.
Mr Netanyahu’s official visit to the Netherlands includes meetings with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who he calls a “personal friend”, and with King Willem-Alexander.
Mr Netanyahu said he planned to speak to Dutch leaders about Israel’s role in preventing the spread of Islamist terrorism.

We couldn’t say goodbye to 2014 without one more #ZwartePiet list
When in December 2013 Chandra Frank compiled a list of common excuses Dutch people make for racism (much of it revolved around defending #ZwartePiet, the #blackface character trotted out around Christmastime and who.....

Who profits from the production of blackface?
That time of the year is coming up again and the contested Dutch blackface figure #Zwarte_Piet (Black Pete) is still with us. Some tried to turn blackface into brownface (only in the #Netherlands) while others are still trying to convince us that #Black_Pete sets a fine example for black people. In any case, anti-blackface protestors […]
Black Europe and Body Politics
BE.BOP (Black Europe & Body Politics) presents yet another important edition titled Spiritual Revolutions & “The Scramble for Africa” this year. For those not familiar with this groundbreaking project, #BE.BOP is a curatorial project that includes exhibitions, presentations, screenings and roundtables by artists (amongst others) from the Black European Diaspora. This project seeks to fill a […]
What the Dutch court ruling against #blackface figure #Zwarte_Piet means
The court case on Dutch blackface hero Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) yesterday quickly became world news. In a nutshell: an #Amsterdam judge did not forbid the figure of Black Pete, but ruled that Zwarte Piet “is a negative stereotype of black people and the city must rethink its involvement in holiday celebrations involving him.” Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der […]
‘Spain enjoyed the most possession’
The annihilation of #Spain by the #Netherlands last Friday (5-1) shocked and delighted #football fans, pundits alike and creatives so much (pundits could have something else to talk about, like total football, except the playing conditions), that it will inspire a million memes, videos, flipbooks and animations (there’s some already) for a while. And everyone […]
Dutch Logic and the New Brown Pete: Making Something Less Racist by Making it More Racist
As most AIAC readers know by now, the Dutch are having a very hard time letting go of their precious blackface tradition. Well sadly, but not surprisingly, #Zwarte_Piet (in English: Black Pete) is still amongst us. Obviously there are so many rational and convincing arguments to keep him; the kids would be terribly upset, […]
Mixed race kids a new phenomenon in the #Netherlands? We think not.
This week cultural centre #de_Balie in Amsterdam will be hosting an event titled ‘LovingDay.nl: (In)visibly Mixed’ on “mixed race” families and relationships (BTW, the Netherlands uncritically accepts this terminology, along with the assumption that certain people are “pure” and others are “mixed”, thereby reifying 19th century race theories). #Loving_Day takes the end of anti-miscegenation […]

Omar Younes, 23, managed to flee Malta illegally on a boat and made it to the Netherlands where he was detained and sent back to Malta. He was one of the 200 migrants who survived the shipwreck 60 nautical miles south of Lampedusa on October 12. An estimated 200 migrants are believed to have perished in the tragedy. Of the surviving migrants, 143 were taken to Malta while 56 were taken to Lampedusa. read (...)
Money flowing through tax havens and shady foundations, thanks to #IKEA
Holdings, foundations and subsidiaries all around the world, all entangled in complex structures: the owners and managers of the Swedish multinational IKEA are expert at cultivating obscurity and concealment, and they seem to have a fondness for tax havens and tax-‘optimising’ financial arrangements: i.e. avoiding tax as much as possible. Rachel Knaebel digs into this financial maze, so remote from the philanthropic ideas promoted by IKEA’s founder. This article was originally published in (...)

When the #FOKN_Bois visited a picturesque Dutch village
I have to be honest; I had to Google Map the village of #Lieshout to see where it exactly lays. And as a matter of fact I, as a Dutch person, never even knew that it’s the hometown of #beer brand #Bavaria, which is a pretty #Popular beer here (the brand also has Charlie Sheen do ads for them and got into trouble at the 2010 World Cup for it’s “ambush marketing”). So thanks to the Fokn Bois, I’ve learned something about my own country.
The Year the #blackface Tradition in the #Netherlands Hit the Big Time
In 2013, the world was introduced to the Dutch December tradition of #Zwarte_Piet (“Black Pete”)—the blackfaced sidekick to #Sinterklaas. Though a letter complaining of the racism inherent in the practice was sent to the Office of the United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights way back in January of last year, and there have […]
Dutch pension fund divests from Israeli banks over #illegal_settlements
Dutch pension asset manager PGGM, one of the largest in the country, said on Wednesday it was divesting from five Israeli banks because they finance illegal settlements. The announcement comes a month after a major Dutch water supplier ended a partnership with an Israeli water company which supplies Israeli towns and settlements in the occupied West Bank. “PGGM recently decided to no longer invest in five Israeli banks,” said the company, which manages about 153 billion euros in funds. read more
Shortly after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela embarked on a six week tour across Europe. As the Dutch newspaper NRC mentioned last week, he initially declined the invitation to include the #Netherlands in this tour, this to the great dismay of Wim Kok, who was the Dutch Finance Minister at the time. Hadn’t the […]
Dutch water company ends partnership with Israeli firm
Dutch water supplier Vitens has ended a partnership with Israeli water company Mekorot due to the “political context,” the Dutch company said on Wednesday. The abrupt decision comes days after a visit to the Mekorot offices in Occupied Palestine by the Netherland’s trade minister Lilianne Ploumen was abruptly cancelled. In a statement, Vitens said it had come to the conclusion that it was “extremely hard” to work with Mekorot on future projects “because they cannot be taken out of the political context.” read more
