Mozilla is shutting down Pocket, the “read it later” service it acquired in 2017 and integrated into the Firefox web browser. Pocket shuts down on July 8, but existing users and paying subscribers will be able to export saved stories until October 8, 2025. After that, finito. “Pocket has helped millions save articles and discover stories worth reading. But the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved, so we’re channeling our resources into projects that better match browsing habits today,” they say. Why kill it? #Ubuntu_25.10 Will Ship with the Linux 6.17 Kernel
    ▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/05/ubuntu-25-10-will-use-linux-6-17-kernel

Day-by-day we’re learning more on what to expect in Ubuntu 25.10 ‘Questing Quokka’, the next short-term release of Ubuntu due for release in October. Today, Canonical’s Kleber Souza, member of the Ubuntu Kernel Team, confirmed the plan is to ship the Linux 6.17 kernel in Ubuntu 25.10 – barring any unforeseen upstream hiccups, of course. As we’re yet to see the release of the Linux 6.15 kernel, and 6.16 is yet to enter development, committing to a version so far out may seem a bit optimistic. But it tracks. Last year Canonical made a major change to its kernel cadence […] You’re reading Ubuntu 25.10 Will Ship with the Linux 6.17 Kernel, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu.
    ▻https://www.tunisienumerique.com/lex-ambassadeur-des-etats-unis-en-syrie-affirme-ahmed-al-charaa-a-

Report: Israel holding talks with Syria on Sharaa regime joining Abraham Accords | The Times of Israel
    ▻https://www.timesofisrael.com/report-israel-holding-talks-with-syria-on-sharaa-regime-joining-abrah

La révolution ? Bon, l’info vient du côté israélien... #new_middle_east

Israel has been holding secret talks with Syrian officials in recent days, including on the possibility of the new regime joining the Abraham Accords, according to a report Thursday, a day after US President Trump invited new Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to join the accords and normalize ties with Israel.

The talks are being mediated by the United Arab Emirates, Channel 12 news said, also referring to unspecified wider regional moves being advanced by the United Arab Emirates. A Haaretz report, by contrast, said the talks were being mediated by Qatar and had been going on for months.

Sharaa confirmed last week that security-related talks were being held through mediators, though he did not comment on potential diplomatic relations.

Channel 12 said one meeting was held in recent days in Azerbaijan, where Israel was represented by the chief of the IDF Operations Directorate, Maj. Gen. Oded Basyuk. He met with representatives from the new Syrian government, with Turkish representatives also present, the report said.

Trump on Wednesday urged Sharaa to join the Abraham Accords, as the two leaders met in Riyadh for the first direct talks between leaders of the countries in 25 years.

      Et du côté US également...

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday Syria’s new leadership wanted peace with Israel as he met its top diplomat following a US decision to ease sanctions.

Rubio met in Turkey with Syria’s foreign minister to discuss further normalisation of relations following a meeting between President Donald Trump and Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Islamist guerrilla turned interim president.

“We think that a peaceful, stable Syria would be one of the most dramatic improvements in the region in a very long time, and we want to do everything we can to help achieve that,” Rubio told reporters after the talks.

US ally Israel has voiced pessimism about Sharaa and has pounded its historic adversary Syria with military strikes, much as it did in the run-up to longtime leader Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow in December.

But Rubio, like Trump, said the new Syrian leadership was open to normalisation with Israel — a major priority in the United States.

“They’ve expressed an interest in being at peace with all of their neighbours, including Israel,” said Rubio, who spoke Thursday by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Al-Sharaa seeks Trump Tower in Damascus and deal with Israel: Reuters - Region - World - Ahram Online

    Une Trump Tower à Damas ? #new_middle_east

Jonathan Bass, a US pro-Trump activist who met Al-Sharaa for four hours in Damascus on 30 April, said the Syrian leader hopes to secure a meeting with Donald Trump during his planned Middle East visit on 13 May.

Syrian activists and Gulf Arab intermediaries have also been involved in efforts to broker the meeting.

Al-Sharaa, who replaced Bashar Al-Assad following his ouster in December, remains under US sanctions and is designated a terrorist by Washington over his past ties to Al-Qaeda.

Bass told Reuters that Al-Sharaa was seeking a “business deal for the future of his country” involving energy development, engagement with Israel, and cooperation on countering Iran.

“He told me he wants a Trump Tower in Damascus. He wants peace with his neighbours. What he told me is good for the region and Israel,” Bass said.

Qatar gets US greenlight to bankroll public sector salaries in Syria

#new_middle_east

The appearance of the girl in the video footage, which was circulated yesterday, while she was wearing niqab and escorting security members, and providing her by state media as a “loved wife” who escaped from her family to Idlib, has triggered a state of broad anger among residents and activists, amid accusations against the headmistress of “conniving with armed parties in a systematic slavery, depriving the girl of her bodily and humanitarian rights and exploiting her in a religious and security framework.

The Syrian Observatory warns against the serious repercussions of this style of crimes, which proves the worsening human rights situation in Syria, where people’s will can be ripped off and kidnappings and forcible marriage of girls can be made into law under a security cover, amid shameful and suspicious silence by state authorities and absence of independent investigations and public accountability of every person involved this crime.

We, at SOHR, call for starting transparent investigation about this case immediately, ensuring the safety and security of the girl, disclosing the circumstances of her disappearance and holding every person involved this crime, in the case that there is evidence of administrative or security complicity.

We also stress that protecting the bodily and intellectual freedoms of women and girls must top the priorities.

#GNOME Replace Totem Video Player with #showtime
    ▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/05/gnome-49-replaces-totem-video-player-with-showtime

Roll credits on Totem, roll camera on Showtime — GNOME developers have officially cast a new video player in #GNOME_49, out in September. Per an upstream merge, GNOME has formally replaced the aged GTK3 Totem video player with the newer, fresher and all-the-more modern GTK4/libadwaita app Showtime in its Core Apps1 lineup. Like its predecessor, Showtime’s user-facing name in GNOME 49 will be changed to the generic moniker of Video Player (I’d wager most of us will continue to call it by its codename, the same way we refer to Files as Nautilus). Showtime may be new in GNOME’s Core Apps, but it’s […] You’re reading GNOME Replace Totem Video Player with Showtime, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu. Do not reproduce elsewhere without (...)

Easily Toggle Ubuntu’s New Wellbeing Reminders On/Off
    ▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/05/ubuntu-wellbeing-toggle-gnome-extension

The Wellbeing controls available in #Ubuntu_25.04 make it easy to get periodic prompts to move your butt or look away from your screen — you might not want them enabled all the time, though. Wellbeing controls were one of the flagship features of #GNOME_48. As well as screen time monitoring (with controls to set a screen time limit, and turn the display greyscale when it’s reached), you can enable reminders to take a break and move. Alerts telling you to get up and move may be helpful during the day, but at nighttime when you’re, say, engrossed in […] You’re reading Easily Toggle Ubuntu’s New Wellbeing Reminders On/Off, a blog post from OMG!
