UN human rights experts* today strongly condemned the umpteenth massacre by Israeli forces in Gaza during a hostage rescue operation in Nuseirat Refugee Camp, which killed at least 274 Palestinians, including 64 children and 57 women, and injured nearly 700.
On 8 June, Israeli Occupation Forces – allegedly assisted by foreign soldiers – entered Nuseirat disguised as displaced persons and aid workers in a humanitarian truck. They violently raided the area, assaulting residents with intense ground and air attacks that spread terror, death and despair.
“According to survivors, the streets of Nuseirat were filled with bodies of dead and injured people, including children and women, lying in pools of blood. Walls were covered in body parts scattered by multiple explosions and bombed houses,” the experts said.
With Gaza’s health sector decimated, the injured taken to hospitals had to wait for medical treatment on the floors, they said.
“While we are relieved by the safe return of four Israeli hostages captured by Palestinian armed groups eight months ago, Israel’s attack on the Nuseirat camp is obnoxious in its excessive violence and devastating impact,” the experts said.
They particularly condemned Israeli forces for treacherously hiding in a humanitarian aid truck coming from the US-built pier , which was intended to facilitate humanitarian assistance. “Acquiring civilian disguise to conduct a military operation constitutes perfidy, which is strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law and tantamount to a war crime,” the experts said.
“These tactics put aid workers and the delivery of much needed humanitarian aid at even greater risk and expose an unprecedented level of savagery in Israeli military actions,” they said.
The World Food Program has already announced the pause of its operations from the pier due to “security concerns.”
“The dramatically high death toll among Palestinians affected by the rescue operation confirms Israel’s blatant disregard for Palestinian life,” the experts said. “Under international law, all civilian life must be equally valued and protected and no life is worth more than another.”
The experts noted that Israel had an opportunity to free the hostages without further bloodshed eight months ago, when the first ceasefire deal was presented. Instead, Israel has systematically rejected ceasefire proposals, preferring to continue its assault on Gaza, which has even taken the lives of Israeli hostages. All the while, Israel has claimed to be engaging in military operations to save them,” they said. “ Using the pretext of seeking to rescue hostages to justify excessive use of force exposes Israel’s criminal actions, including through humanitarian camouflage, and tells us they have reached a whole new level, ” the experts said.
“The military operation in Nuseirat stands out as one of the most heinous acts in Israel’s destructive assault against the Palestinian people since 7 October , which has killed over 36,000 Palestinians, injured over 80,000 and displaced and starved 2 million people in #Gaza, while violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem also continues unabated ,” they said.
The experts noted that the UN Security Council Resolution 2735 is a way out of the horror, reiterating their call for an arms embargo against Israel to end the violence against Palestinians by Israeli forces and settlers.
“While the hour is already late, we hope this Resolution will pave the way for durable peace for the Palestinian people and freedom for hostages being held by Palestinian armed groups and for the thousands of Palestinian hostages arbitrarily detained by Israel,” they said.

Les forces israéliennes ont tué plus de 200 personnes au cours d’une opération visant à sauver quatre otages détenus par le Hamas à Gaza, dans l’une des attaques israéliennes les plus sanglantes de cette guerre qui dure depuis huit mois.
Les États-Unis ont participé à l’opération, mais des sources ont déclaré à CNN que les troupes américaines n’étaient pas sur le terrain. Le degré d’implication des États-Unis reste incertain.
Les quatre prisonniers seraient en bonne santé.
Entre-temps, Israël a été critiqué pour cette opération meurtrière qui, selon le Hamas, a également entraîné la mort d’autres captifs israéliens.
Outre le lourd bilan des victimes, les groupes de défense des droits ont exprimé leur indignation à l’égard d’Israël, qui a utilisé des camions d’aide humanitaire dans le cadre de son opération.

« La libération est joyeuse, le prix est honteux », a déclaré M. Cassif dans un message publié sur le site de médias sociaux X en hébreu.
Le responsable de la politique étrangère de l’Union européenne, Josep Borrell, a déclaré que l’UE condamnait « dans les termes les plus forts » l’attaque israélienne.

Hamas published a statement late on Saturday afternoon following Israel’s attack on central Gaza, calling it a “horrific massacre against innocent civilians”.
It said that the announcement of the “release of a number of its prisoners” in Gaza, referring to rescued Israeli captives, would not change Israel’s “strategic failure in the Gaza Strip” after eight months of “massacres, genocide, siege and starvation”.
“Our valiant resistance still maintains the largest number in its possession, and is capable of increasing its yield of prisoners,” the statement said.
It also condemned US complicity in Saturday’s military operation.
It said: “What was revealed by American and Hebrew media about American participation in the criminal operation that was carried out today proves once again the complicit role of the American administration, its full participation in the war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip, [and] the falsity of its declared positions on the humanitarian situation and its concern for the lives of civilians.”

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur to Palestine, slammed Israel for using “humanitarian camouflage” in its deadly attack on al-Nuseirat refugee camp, during which four Israeli captives were recovered and more than 200 Palestinians were killed.
Israel is alleged to have entered the area inside humanitarian aid trucks.
“Israel has used hostages to legitimise killing, injuring, maiming, starving and traumatising Palestinians in Gaza. And while intensifying violence against Palestinians in the rest of the occupied territory and Israel,” Albanese said in a post to X social media.
Albanese went on to slam the Israeli government for not doing more to secure a ceasefire earlier.

Some of the Israeli captives being held by Hamas were killed by Israeli forces during the most recent attack on al-Nuseirat refugee camp and nearby areas in central Gaza, according to a Hamas spokesman.
Hamas military spokesman Abu Obeida said that during the “horrific massacre” in al-Nuseirat, Israeli forces killed some of the captives that had been held in Hamas custody.
Israel was able to recover four live captives during the attack early Saturday. All four were reported to be in good health.
Israel has yet to respond to the public allegation made by Abu Obeida in a statement on his Telegram channel.
Saturday’s “operation will pose a great danger to the enemy hostages and will negatively impact their conditions and lives,” Abu Obeida said in his statement.
Israel estimates that number of Israeli captives remaining in the Gaza Strip is 120, including 43 who have been declared dead.
’Bloody massacre’
It is not yet known how many Israeli captives were allegedly killed. Obeida did not provide a specific number, but implied more than one.
Israeli forces killed at least 210 Palestinians during the Nuseirat operation on Saturday, according to local documentation.
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas instructed Palestine’s envoy to the United Nations to call for an emergency session of the Security Council following what he called Israel’s “bloody massacre” in Nuseirat camp.
A statement released by Palestine’s official news agency Wafa said that President Abbas “is engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts with Arab and international stakeholders to convene an emergency session of the UN Security Council”.
“The aim is to address the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and compel the Israeli occupation to comply with international legitimacy resolutions, including those calling for an immediate ceasefire,” the statement said.

Basé à Portland (Oregon), #NuScale tablait initialement sur une première mise en service de son petit réacteur d’une capacité de 77 mégawatts, contre environ 1.000 pour les centrales standard, en 2026 à Idaho Falls (Idaho, nord-ouest), mais il a dû repousser l’échéance à 2030.
Reste à convaincre le régulateur. Mais là aussi, pas d’inquiétude, on a déjà mis en oeuvre les modifications des régulations attendues, pour pouvoir déployer des petits réacteurs partout par dizaine.
« Nous voulons prouver aux régulateurs que nous n’avons pas besoin de plans d’évacuation massifs », clame Daniel Stout, « parce que notre conception exclut un accident qui le justifierait. »

In Syria, Western Media Cheer #Al_Qaeda

The Syrian government—a dictatorship known for imprisoning, torturing and disappearing dissidents—is easy to vilify. And over the last five years of Syria’s civil war, it has committed its share of atrocities. But there is more than one side to every story, and US media coverage has mainly reflected one side—that of the rebels—without regard for accuracy or basic context.

Almost always overlooked in the US (and UK) media #narrative is the fact that the rebels in East Aleppo were a patchwork of Western- and Gulf-backed jihadist groups dominated by Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-#Nusra)—Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria—along with its ally, Ahrar al-Sham (Daily Beast, 8/8/16; Foreign Policy, 9/1/16). These groups are explicitly anti-democratic and have been implicated in human rights violations, from mass execution and child beheadings to using caged religious minorities as human shields.
In the absence of any desire to evoke a political response, US media would surely have identified East Aleppo’s rebels by the name of the most famous militant group in the world—Al Qaeda. Yet press reports regularly referred to the militant forces dominating East Aleppo simply as “rebels.”

The issue of whether to continue to demand Assad’s departure arises just as the UN peace negotiations process on Syria – meaning negotiations among the outside powers intervening in the conflict – begin a new and highly political phase. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has revealed that the next phase will turn on bargaining among the international sponsors of anti-Assad groups about who would be allowed to join a new government. Those decisions, in turn, would depend on which of the groups are deemed by the foreign sponsors of those very groups to be “terrorists” and which are deemed acceptable.
As Hammond acknowledges, the Saudis are certainly not going to agree to call #Ahrar_al-Sham or other extremist jihadist groups allied with it and al-Nusra “terrorists”. They may have to give up al-#Nusra Front, which has expressed support for the Islamic State terrorist assault on Paris.
Unless Obama is prepared to face a rupture in the US alliance with the Sunni Gulf Sheikdoms over the issue, the result will be that the very groups committed to overthrowing the remnants of the old order by force will be invited by the United States and its Gulf allies to take key positions in the post-Assad government. It’s the right time for Obama to rethink the administration’s policy toward both Assad and his jihadist foes.

After a two-year absence from the international stage — during which the mainstream media dispatched them to the realm of nonexistent entities — on October 1 the “moderate rebels” of Syria were back. The New York Times said so. Russian attacks were targeting moderates rather than ISIS, a man with a camera was quoted saying; and the Times story by Anne Barnard appeared to confirm his suspicion; even as a companion report on Russian actions in Syria by Helene Cooper, Michael R. Gordon, and Neil MacFarquhar revealed that these are the same moderates who were carefully vetted by the CIA, and concerning whom little was heard ever after. Their numbers are put at 3,000 to 5,000, though the Cooper-Gordon-MacFarquhar article leaves uncertain if that is their original or their present strength. This illumination, after so long a blackout, will doubtless be a subject for inquiry in coming days. Why it would seem worthwhile for the Russians to attack so small a force, neither of the Times stories bothered to say; nor did they explain why, if the moderate rebels are anti-Jihadist, they were allowed to garrison in the town of Talbiseh in a region north of Homs that (according to the veteran Middle East reporter Patrick Cockburn) has been “ruled” for the past two years “by Jabhat al-Nusra and associated extreme Islamist groups.”
One cannot help being struck, in the Barnard story, by a disparity between the thinness of the evidence and the cocksure tone of the analysis.

Television presenters spoke of anti-Assad forces being bombed in northern Syria, but seldom added that the most important of these were Jabhat al-#Nusra and Ahrar ash-Sham. More than 30 air strikes were against Jaysh al-Fateh, the Army of Conquest, which has seized much of Idlib province but is led by al-Nusra. The situation is genuinely complex, with between 20 and 30 opposition armed groups backed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. But news reports had a strong whiff of Cold War propaganda when any fact could be distorted in order to demonise Moscow.

Their concerns are not unfounded. In a short documentary aired on Israel’s Channel 2, wounded Syrian fighters being treated in an Israeli hospital said they would not protect the Druze, adding that Nusra Front fighters would probably kill the Druze if they entered their areas.
Claiming to be fighters with the Free Syrian Army, they freely admitted to fighting alongside Nusra Front in the south, hailing the fighters as “strong and heroic”.

Sedqi al-Maqet, a Syrian activist who lives in the Israeli-occupied part of Syria known as the Golan Heights was interned after a dawn raid on his home by Israeli secret police at the end of February. Until quite recently, the Israeli media was absolutely banned from mentioning his case at all, even from referring or linking to foreign press reports on the issue.
Al-Maqet is a Syrian Druze from Majdal Shams known for his media activism and support of the Bashar al-Assad regime. He had published information online (including via his Facebook account) about contacts he said he had witnessed between Israeli armed forces in the Golan and what he termed terrorists active in the Syrian-controlled sector of the Golan.
As I have noted in this column before, Israeli military spokespeople have now admitted to what the reports of UN peace-keeping forces in the Golan have been implying for some time: Israel has an active alliance with the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s official affiliate in Syria.
Although al-Qaeda as a movement has a history of making hostile statements against Israel (and statements of an anti-Semitic nature) it has never been involved in much in the way of military confrontations against the Zionist state. Al-Qaeda has historically had two main focuses: US military and civilian targets, and military and civilian targets within Arab states (often specialising in brutal sectarian attacks against those it considers false Muslims).
Since the Nusra Front took over a key checkpoint in the Golan in the summer, it has not gone unnoticed by Arabs that Nusra has completely avoided attacking Israeli military targets in the region. The Qunaitra crossing stands between the Israeli-occupied and the Syrian-controlled sectors of the Golan – Nusra has held it since August.
UN peacekeepers have observed regular contacts between Nusra forces in the area and the Israeli troops stationed on the other side of the ceasefire line (Israel has illegally occupied part of the Golan since 1967). They also observed cargo of an unknown nature passing between the two sides from the Israelis.
