Ubuntu first switched to using Wayland as its default display server in 2017 before reverting the following year. It tried again in 2021 and has stuck with it since. But while Wayland is what most of is now login to after installing Ubuntu, anyone doing so on a PC or laptop with an NVIDIA graphics card present instead log in to an Xorg/X11 session. This is because NVIDIA’s proprietary graphics drivers (which many, especially gamers, opt for to get the best performance, access to full hardware capabilities, etc) have not supported Wayland as well as as they could’ve. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made the settlement public Friday, saying the chip designer “failed to disclose that cryptomining was a significant element of its material revenue growth” for GPUs that are designed and marketed for PC gaming.

Nvidia agreed to a cease-and-desist order in addition to paying the $5.5 million fine to settle charges, the SEC said.

The company has made efforts in the past few years to disclose the impact of cryptomining on its business, though said in its most recent earnings that it had “limited visibility.”

Since the launch of Quake II RTX in 2019, fans have kept their eyes peeled for similar ray- and path-tracing updates for other classic ’90s shooters. It’s fertile upgrade territory, since modern machines push vanilla versions of Doom and Quake to over 1,000 fps by default—that’s wiggle room for computationally expensive lighting techniques—but those games’s official handlers haven’t really moved the ray-tracing needle.

Instead, Friday’s good news comes from the Doom community: The first three episodes of Doom 1 (1993) can now be played with top-to-bottom ray tracing enabled. Yes, I know, I see the date at the top of this article, but I swear: I installed and tested Doom within the new PRBoom+RT engine, and the results have not only looked quite good but felt surprisingly performative.
