Complications associated with being overweight are linked to lower school performance, it found..
The study found that children showing physical changes due to being obese, such as raised blood pressure, higher levels of bad cholesterol and resistance to the blood sugar controlling hormone, insulin, had poorer scores on thinking tests.[...]
The researchers from New York University compared 49 children with metabolic syndrome, a collection of at least three health problems associated with obesity which can include a large waist, low good choelsterol, high blood fats, high blood pressure and insulin resistance which is a pre-cursor to type 2 diabetes.
Health Problems in Teens Linked with Worse Cognitive Skills

While obesity has been a primary target for wellness programs, Convit said weight itself should not be the target, but the symptoms of metabolic syndrome, which can be assessed by a pediatrician and often improved by exercise. Extra weight alone isn’t a problem in an otherwise active child, he said.
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed in people who have at least three of these five criteria: high blood pressure, insulin resistance, high triglycerides, a large waist and low levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Away from the famines, Africa confronts a new killer: obesity - Africa - World - The Independent

The real culprit, researchers believe, is the shift to urban living. Cities in Africa are the fastest-growing in the world. This is not only about the spread of McDonald’s, KFC and the “Coca-Colanisation” of the developing world. It is also about the change in diet that occurs when people move from growing to buying their food.
Jenny Cresswell, chief author of the Lancet study, said: "Once people move to the city, their activity levels go down. They are no longer able to grow their own food. Instead they tend to rely on street hawkers and eat foods high in fat and sugar.

American Beverage Association sponsors conference on obesity in minorities? | Marion Nestle

the third [sponsor] is the American Beverage Association (ABA), the trade association for Coke, Pepsi, and other sugary drinks linked to poor diets and overweight among children and adults.
This is the group that so opposes Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed bad on soft drinks larger than 16 ounces.
(...) the soft drink industry makes no apologies for targeting minorities and considers it “smart marketing.”
(...) The irony: soft drink companies are sponsoring a conference to solve a health problem that their products helped cause in the first place.
Want to take bets on whether any of the speakers suggests cutting down on sodas or “don’t drink your calories”?

THE trillions of bacteria that colonise our guts are in jeopardy. Overusing antibiotics has not only led to the development of dangerous superbugs, but has changed the bacteria that live inside us. Now evidence suggests that new gut floras may be responsible for our expanding waistlines.
