Hi everyone! Probably you have already read my last article about creating an open source project and what advice I gave to newbies at the planning stage and starting work on the project.More than half a year has passed since the writing of the article and the original idea was reborn into something new. Initially, the basic idea was to create a gem for making administrative panels, which are already a pretty decent amount of, but as a result, having started work on the project, I radically changed its concept, put a team together and a large amount of feedback from different target audiences. What was doneI radically changed my priorities for the last 2 months, switched completely to the project because work for the third party gradually exhausted me and did not bring pleasure. As a result, companies are interested in finding out more about open source knowledge base software. Using the open source model is a popular way to leverage the abilities of the crowd to produce software. There are many definitions of “open source”, but here is one from opensource.com:The term “open source” refers to something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible.“Open” can refer to an absence of traditional hierarchical team structures, as well as a publicly accessible design. In the case of software development, open source tends to refer to the source code of the software in that users can directly access the code. Some of the eyeo teamContent creators find ourselves in the midst of a quandary. Online content began available for free, and as the web grew we tried to find a way to pay the creators, and for many years that was #advertising.Like many things that initially seemed like a good idea, we took advertising too far, and now readers are bombarded with flying, swooshing, obnoxious attention-grabbing boxes coming from all angles.Naturally, those interested in privacy, battery life, or plain old peace and quiet reacted and started using tools to block advertising. So much so that it’s estimated that 30–40% of users now use some form of ad blocker.Blockers don’t solve the content creators initial problem: getting paid. pfSense has a completely redesigned user interface since several versions. All settings can be easily reached and adjusted with this interface. The freely configurable dashboard is also a fine thing. However, there is sometimes the case that you would like to make settings via an API or the command line. pfSense does not currently have an API, this will only be available in one of the upcoming versions. Until then you can use the pfSense developer shell, also called pfSsh.php.Accessing pfSsh.phpThe fastest way to get to the developer shell is to connect to pfSense via SSH or directly connect a screen to the firewall. That’s insane!I started looking into projects with large amounts of contributions. It got me thinking. A common pattern started appearing. They all have amazing readme.md files. I doubt it would have been easy to contribute otherwise. There may be a connection. I’d sure say there is!Let’s mention a few famous projects like React, Vue, freeCodeCamp, Sourcerer or Serverless. You can see their readme.md’s are a perfect blend of documentation, project overview, FAQ, and contribution steps. In the free market, the laws of supply and demand would suggest that the lower the price of something is, the easier it is to sell it — Based on this, you could infer that something which costs $0 and which delivers real value to its users would “fly off the shelves”.Unfortunately, this is rarely the case when it comes to open source #software. When applied to the software industry, the laws of supply and demand seem to break down in surprising ways. One unusual aspect of the industry is that the supply curve for software does not taper off as it gets closer to the $0 price point; even at that point, there is still a lot of competition — Not only between different open source projects but also between ‘free’ (ad-supported) software services. What is most surprising about the software industry (...)

In this blog post, I’ll cover the theory, implementation, and challenges of building GraphQL Subscriptions from scratch. In case you are unfamiliar with GraphQL, here’s a primer: GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with your existing data. GraphQL was open-sourced in 2015, and the subscription operation (added to the spec in 2017) allows you to subscribe to real-time data in GraphQL. GraphQL Subscriptions power a number of features on Facebook, including live comments and streaming reactions on live videos. If you’d like a more thorough overview GraphQL, check out graphql.org. As some of you will have already noticed, the project has moved to a new web location, and the project is now known as the “my data is MY data” symbol:Why such a move? The “eelo” trademark we have been using so far has been filed by myself in the EU and in the USA. However, some companies have filed opposition to its registration, because they claim that there exists a likelihood of confusion between their prio similar marks and “eelo”.In some cases, we could arrange a coexistence agreement, by reducing the scope of our goods and services, that was somewhat too broad. Decentralized package management is an exciting area of tool development for today’s developers. Decentralized package managers have the potential to remove centralized points of failure from the interconnected network of modern software libraries. They give development teams a straight-forward way to ensure their internal networks of code are always available, while at the same time ensuring redundancy across the entire Internet. Decentralized package managers can make our code, one of modern society’s most valuable outputs, more resistant to tampering, censorship, and manipulation. That said, decentralized package management is still incomplete. There are many issues to sort out when publishing our code into networks built around an immutability of digital information where unlimited (...)
