The World’s Email Encryption Software Relies on One Guy, Who is Going Broke
▻http://www.propublica.org/article/the-worlds-email-encryption-software-relies-on-one-guy-who-is-going-brok
The man who built the free email encryption software used by whistleblower Edward Snowden, as well as hundreds of thousands of journalists, dissidents and security-minded people around the world, is running out of money to keep his project alive.
Werner Koch wrote the software, known as Gnu Privacy Guard, in 1997, and since then has been almost single-handedly keeping it alive with patches and updates from his home in Erkrath, Germany. Now 53, he is running out of money and patience with being underfunded.

Here is a list of potential targets that we investigated (they all call gethostbyname, one way or another), but to the best of our knowledge, the buffer overflow cannot be triggered in any of them: apache, cups, dovecot, gnupg, isc-dhcp, lighttpd, mariadb/mysql, nfs-utils, nginx, nodejs, openldap, openssh, postfix, proftpd, pure-ftpd, rsyslog, samba, sendmail, sysklogd, syslog-ng, tcp_wrappers, vsftpd, xinetd. That being said, we believe it would be interesting if other people could have a look, just in case we missed something.

OpenStreetMap Moves Beyond The Streets, Starts Mapping Amazonia
from the boldly-going dept
OpenStreetMap is fast-emerging as one of the key open projects — so much so, that proprietary rivals in the world of digital maps are evidently getting worried. Just as the LAMP stack — GNU/Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl/PHP/Python — provided a robust and free foundation for a whole generation of websites a decade and a half ago, so OpenStreetMap is becoming more widely adopted as part of the mobile web, and as geodata grows in importance for a new generation of software applications aimed at users on the move.

3.5 gawk-Specific Regexp Operators
GNU software that deals with regular expressions provides a number of additional regexp operators. These operators are described in this section and are specific to gawk; they are not available in other awk implementations. Most of the additional operators deal with word matching. For our purposes, a word is a sequence of one or more letters, digits, or underscores (‘_’):

“A Censorship-Resistant, Privacy-Enhancing and Fully Decentralized Name System
The Domain Name System (DNS) is vital for access to information on the Internet. This makes it a target for attackers whose aim is to suppress free access to information. This paper introduces the design and implementation of the GNU Name System (GNS), a fully decentralized and censorship-resistant name system. GNS provides a privacy-enhancing alternative to DNS which preserves the desirable property of memorable names. Due to its design, it can also double as a partial replacement of public key infrastructures, such as X.509. The design of GNS incorporates the capability to integrate and coexist with DNS. GNS is based on the principle of a petname system and builds on ideas from the Simple Distributed Security Infrastructure (SDSI), addressing a central issue with the decentralized mapping of secure identifiers to memorable names: namely the impossibility of providing a global, secure and memorable mapping without a trusted authority. GNS uses the transitivity in the SDSI design to replace the trusted root with secure delegation of authority, thus making petnames useful to other users while operating under a very strong adversary model. In addition to describing the GNS design, we also discuss some of the mechanisms that are needed to smoothly integrate GNS with existing processes and procedures in Web browsers. Specifically, we show how GNS is able to transparently support many assumptions that the existing HTTP(S) infrastructure makes about globally unique names.”
[GNUnet is one of the very few serious alternative naming systems on the Internet.]

GNU GPL, JS and BS
▻http://hroy.eu/posts/gpl-js-bs
This is a long due post, in response to a thread about a new JS outliner released under the GPL. I just did not take the time to write something about it until now… sorry!
It’s quite outstanding, but trying to find some good resource online about this issue is nearly impossible. If you try to read about how the GNU GPL impacts javascript web apps, you will find so much nonsense–that will make you believe the GPL is going to “infect” everything. (In spite of the fact that some of the most important Javascript libraries out there are licensed under the GPL, like Jquery IIRC.)
First, let’s get things straight: the GNU GPL does not infect anything nor has any “viral” effect. You don’t catch the GPL like the flu. In order for GPL obligations to kick in and apply to your javascript web app, you must (...)

Vidéo : le codec H.264 bientôt libéré par Cisco
▻http://www.zdnet.fr/actualites/video-le-codec-h264-bientot-libere-par-cisco-39795219.htm

Comments on Cisco, Mozilla, and H.264
▻http://xiphmont.livejournal.com/61927.html
This arrangement has obvious short-term benefits. Open source projects get licensed (if partial and restricted) access to H.264, and users don’t feel like they’re being held hostage in the ongoing battle between the open web and closed codecs. Firefox and other projects can install H.264 support (via Cisco), which is a big deal.
That said, today’s arrangement is at best a stopgap, and it doesn’t change much on the ground. How many people don’t already have H.264 codecs on their machines, legit or otherwise? Enthusiasts and professionals alike have long paid little attention to licensing. Even most businesses today don’t know and don’t care if the codecs they use are properly licensed[1]. The entire codec market has been operating under a kind of ’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy for the past 15 years and I doubt the MPEG LA minds. It’s helped H.264 become ubiquitous, and the LA can still enforce the brass tacks of the license when it’s to their competitive advantage (or rather, anti-competitive advantage; they’re a legally protected monopoly after all).

Why GNU Autotools is not my favorite build system
▻http://voices.canonical.com/jussi.pakkanen/2011/09/13/autotools
The GNU Autotools are nothing short of an astounding engineering achievement. They can configure, compile and install software ranging from supercomputers all the way down to a SunOS 1.0 from 1983, or thereabouts. It can even do shared libraries portably, which is considered to be among the darkest of magicks on many of these platforms.
This technological triumph does not change the fact that using Autotools is awful. The feeling of using Autotools is not totally unlike trying to open a safe by hitting it repeatedly with your head. Here are just some ways they cause pain to developers.
What to use then?
That depends. Believe it or not, there are build systems that are even worse. Actually most of them are.
My personal favorite is CMake. It fixes almost all of the issues listed here. It has a couple of downsides too. Its language syntax is weird at some places. The way its state and cache values interact on repeated invocations is non-intuitive. Fortunately you usually don’t have to care about that if you just want to build your stuff.
