    Railway infrastructure breakthrough and mode choice: evidence from the Ceneri Base Tunnel in Switzerland
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1938839/full

    Major investments in railway infrastructure and service provision are often justified by their potential to increase public transport (PT) use and induce modal shift away from private motorized transport (PMT), thereby contributing to more sustainable mobility. Yet, empirical evidence on the extent to which large-scale railway interventions affect individual mode choice remains scattered. This study evaluates the impact of the Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT), opened in Ticino, Switzerland, in 2020, together with associated PT offer improvements, on work and study commuting mode choice. Drawing on the INDMOB travel survey, that collected data from 24,577 individuals, we analyze changes in commuting practices between 2019 and 2023 and estimate the causal effect of the CBT opening using a (…)

    Urban land-use dynamics and changing landscapes in Kano, Nigeria (1950–2020)
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1892715

    Kano is one of the rapidly urbanizing cities of sub-Saharan Africa, characterized by a growing population, sprawling development, and weak planning controls. Understanding the city’s land-use dynamics is vital for its sustainability. This study examines the decadal land-use dynamics of the Municipality, between 1950 and 2020. Using unsupervised classification, topographic sheets, and multi-date satellite imagery, the city’s growth patterns were quantified geospatially. The results show that Kano expanded from 27.50 km2 in 1950 to 355.25 km2 in 2020, an increase of 1,192.73% over 7 decades, and the average annual growth rate of 3.71%. The highest growth was recorded between 1975 and 1990 (72.75 km2 to 162.00 km2), with an annual growth rate of 5.53%, while the slowest growth was (…)

    Planetary Boundaries and construction: pressures on water, air, and soil in Jordan
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1909137/full

    BackgroundThe Planetary Boundaries (PB) framework defines a finite safe operating space for humanity. In semi‑arid Jordan—one of the world’s most water‑stressed countries—urban construction is an important driver of pressures on scarce blue water resources, local air quality, and soil function.ObjectiveThis study (i) assesses how current construction practices in Jordan’s main urban centers translate into local Earth‑system pressures and (ii) proposes an Earth‑system governance model that links these pressures to enforceable project‑ and sector‑level controls.MethodsA multiple case‑study design was applied to 10 active construction projects. A PB‑derived checklist was used to document site‑level indicators of water use, soil contamination, and aerosol generation. Sixty‑eight (…)

    Governing urban floods in an emerging capital region: a social-ecological-technological systems policy analysis of Samarinda City, Indonesia
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1933366

    Urban flood governance in Samarinda is entering a new regional context. The establishment of Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) and the emerging IKN–Samarinda–Balikpapan urban ecosystem are accelerating spatial, infrastructural, and institutional interdependence across East Kalimantan. This transition increases the importance of ensuring that Samarinda’s flood policies are not only technically effective but also socially inclusive and ecologically grounded. This study applies the Social–Ecological–Technological Systems (SETS) framework to: (1) classify the composition of existing flood-control policies in Samarinda, and (2) identify SETS components that receive comparatively limited policy attention. A directed content analysis was conducted on 11 policy and planning documents. The analysis (…)

    How urban experiments redefine problems, imaginaries and futures: a case study on wireless charging in London and South of England
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1884518/full

    IntroductionThis paper examines a demonstration project centred on wireless charging infrastructures in the South of England to investigate how the interaction between imaginative work and materialization in urban experiments may reshape and reveal new urban futures.MethodsQualitative data including documentary sources, surveys and semi-structured interviews were subject to reflexive thematic analysis informed by sensitising concepts from curatorial literature.ResultsFour themes are identified by attending to the shared concerns of curation and urban experimentation. Urban experiments are thus identified as sites of dialogue (between objects, places and publics); Multiplicity (of materialities, representations and mobilisations); revelatory tension and disruption; and ultimately sites (…)

    Talent agglomeration and urban inclusive green growth
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1869544/full

    Amid slowing global economic growth, the “demographic dividend” has diminishing returns, making it essential to leverage the “talent dividend” to achieve urban inclusive green growth (UIGG). Using panel data from 280 prefecture-level cities in China (2003-2023) and fixed-effect econometric model, this study examines the impact and mechanisms of talent agglomeration (Talagg) on UIGG. The findings show that: (1) Talagg significantly and directly promotes UIGG. (2) Heterogeneity studies show that the effect varies obviously by economic geography, city size, and city type. (3) Mechanism analyses identify two key pathways through which Talagg improves UIGG: green technology innovation and entrepreneurial activity. (4) Further analysis highlights synergistic effects between Talagg and (…)

    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1867418/full

    The study investigates the factors affecting sustainable urban transport adoption among in the context of smart cities and ‘Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11)’. While the concept of sustainable transport is attracting attention, previous studies have mainly adopted linear analysis methods, which fail to explain various aspects of transport behavior. In response, this research employs a multi-pronged approach using a combination of ‘Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)’, ‘Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)’ and ‘fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA)’. The study surveyed 433 Generation Z participants with a questionnaire. SEM findings highlight the importance of ‘perceived sustainability’, ‘perceived behavioural control and social influence’ in predicting adoption (…)

    Béton. Enquête en Sables Mouvants

    https://static.bdbase.fr/images/books/webp/thumbs/88/couvertures/319088.webp

      https://sauvegardedesboisdeballens.ch/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/cropped-Logo_Bois_Ballens_COULEUR.jpg

      L’#ASBBE est composée d’habitant.es de Ballens, des villages avoisinants et venant d’ailleurs dans le #canton_de_Vaud.

      L’Association s’est créée en urgence le 24 juin 2024, pour donner suite à l’occupation citoyenne des Bois de Ballens par les jeunes membres de l’association Grondements des terres. L’action de ces militant.es avait pour but d’alerter la population de Ballens et environs au sujet de l’exploitation prochaine (2027-) de la plus grande carrière de gravier du canton de Vaud.

      Cette exploitation gigantesque entraînera la destruction de manière irréversible à court et moyen termes d’une immense forêt et de tout un écosystème. Elle affectera la population d’une région étendue, touchant de nombreux villages, en induisant des nuisances de plusieurs ordres et des dégâts sur des ressources essentielles.

      Les informations relayées par les militant.es des Grondements des terres et celles trouvées dans l’enquête journalistique fouillée de heidi.news, ainsi que dans d’autres médias (cf site internet de l’ASBBE) ont servi de base aux questionnements de notre Association, informations qui seront vérifiées point par point :

      - La gravière des Bois de Ballens fera au moins 1.5 km carré et 60 mètres de profondeur ;
      - 18.5 millions de mètres cubes en seront extraits, soit 6 fois le Mormont ;
      – Cette concession sera en activité pendant 40 ans ou plus ;
      – Selon le contrat signé par la commune de Ballens, seul 40% du gravier serait évacué par les rails ;
      – les 60 % restants seront transportés par camions. Cela représentera une moyenne de 100 passages (200 allers-retours) de camions par jour, 23 000 par an ;
      - Entre les trains passagers prévus à cadence de 15 minutes prochainement entre Morges et Yens et les convois déjà en place pour la gravière d‘Apples, il y a de fortes chances que les transports se fassent de nuit ;
      – À Apples, il avait aussi été dit qu‘il n’y aurait pas besoin de laver le gravier, mais finalement, c’est quand même le cas. Aucune raison de penser que ce sera différent à Ballens. Les volumes d‘eau gaspillés seront importants dans nos communes déjà mises sous pression ;
      - La section romande de la Fédération des architectes suisses (FAS Romandie) soutient les alternatives au tout béton, en encourageant « l’émergence de nouveaux modèles économiques de la construction » (La FAS Romandie soutient le postulat Marendaz).
      – Dans une vingtaine d’années, l’ensemble des carrières vaudoises arrivera à épuisement et de nouveaux modèles de bâtis s‘imposeront par la force des choses, autant y réfléchir maintenant ;
      - La Commune de Morges a adopté une « stratégie d’arborisation et de végétalisation (plan d’action 2023-2026 Stratégie d’arborisation), alors qu’à Ballens, on détruit une forêt gigantesque pour faire du béton ;
      – Ce projet de gravière a été initié il y a 40 ans. Son exploitation aurait déjà dû commencer, mais la multinationale Holcim et la géante Orllati sont en pleine bataille juridique pour gagner la concession qui débutera les travaux. C‘est l‘unique raison qui nous laisse une petite marge de temps pour réagir ;
      - Nous sommes de nombreuses voix silencieuses à voir le non-sens de ce projet démesuré, en pleine crise climatique.

      Ces questionnements posés, notre Association s’est fixé les buts suivants :

      - Promouvoir la défense des Bois de Ballens et environs, de leur écosystème et les espaces menacés de la région
      - Soutenir les démarches démocratiques, consultatives et populaires concernant les forêts de Ballens et environs et les espaces menacés de la région
      – Sensibiliser à l’impact des gravières sur l’environnement
      – Promouvoir les alternatives écoresponsables au béton
      – Sensibiliser à la #convention_d’Aarhus.

    Understanding housing consumption behavior for sustainable urban development: the influence of perceived value and perceived risk on purchase intention in China’s higher-tier urban housing markets
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sustainable-cities/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1900552/full

    Sustainable urban development requires a profound understanding of housing consumption dynamics, as housing constitutes both a fundamental human need and a critical determinant of urban social sustainability. This study examines the psychological correlates of housing purchase intention in China’s higher-tier urban housing markets, focusing on the interplay among perceived value, perceived risk, and socioeconomic heterogeneity. Drawing upon perceived value theory, perceived risk theory, and the theory of planned behavior, we model perceived value (comprising price value, emotional value, social value, and quality value) as the independent variable, perceived risk (comprising transaction subject risk, transaction object risk, and environmental risk) as the mediator, and purchase (…)
