Scots will vote whether to live in an independent Scotland or not. My feeling is that when nation & nationalism, rather than being tools of oppression, discrimination, marginalization, etc., are mobilized to empower people (like in the case of the Yes campaigners, fighting for a fairer and more progressive society), we, critical geographers, become indeed... voiceless.

We just don’t know how to deal with a power which shows its good rather than evil face. We are so used to engage with the dark side of power that when this power (in the form of Scottish nationalism) seems to come forward for the good, then we all of a sudden loose our critical tools.

Progressive nationalism may be an oxymoron per se and there is nothing good in the Scottish Yes campaign; but even more so, how to interpret this silence about Scotland among critical geographers?

Abstract

This report focuses on the growing interest in the relationship between maps, narratives and metanarratives. Following a brief historical contextualization of these relationships, this report explores their current state in the Geoweb era. Using the distinction between story maps and grid maps as an analytical framework, I review emerging issues around the extensive use of technologies and online mapping services (i.e. Google maps) to convey stories and to produce new ones. Drawing on literature in film studies, literary studies, visual arts, computer science and communication, I also emphasize the emergence of new forms of spatial expressions interested in providing different perspectives about places and about stories associated to places. In sum, I argue that mapping both vernacular knowledge and fiction is central to understanding places in depth.

Over the past two decades many borders were transformed from sites primarily characterized by law enforcement and policing activities designed to intercept people who violate immigration laws to sites for militarized security activities supposedly focused on preventing violent threats from entering the state’s territory. The stigma associated with fortifying political borders has disappeared and at least twenty-eight security barriers were initiated or expanded worldwide, or almost triple the number that were built during the entire Cold War. However, the construction of new physical barriers is only part of the story and an even more widespread and far-reaching trend has been the deployment of new unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), sophisticated surveillance systems, high tech sensors, and military hardware including attack helicopters and armored vehicles. Contrary to expectations at the end of the Cold War, the current era of globalization has resulted in the most intensive and extensive period of bordering in the history of the world.

This session will analyze the emergence of a new border security paradigm of hardened and militarized borderlines and an interrelated global exchange of security practices, technologies, and information. We are looking for papers that consider militarization of borders on the ground and the circuits of knowledge that allow these technologies to be deployed at borders. Both theoretical papers that consider the significance of border hardening and empirical papers that describe the history and impact of new technologies at specific borders are welcome.

Dr Alan Ingram teaches critical approaches to geopolitics and security in the Department of Geography, University College London, where he is Senior Lecturer. He has an MA and PhD from the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge.

His current research considers how artists respond to and engage with geopolitics. There is a blog on this project and a website for the associated exhibition.

The ’Geopolitical Passport’ series offers visitors to ExploringGeopolitics a unique opportunity to find out more about the enormous variety of views within the geopolitical traditions. The floor has been given to scholars from several countries and various disciplines. The questions address issues all people with an interest in geopolitics grapple with. How should we define it? What are the most fascinating geopolitical ideas? And how will the geopolitical future look like?

Geographers studying technology have recently turned their gaze upon “big data” – massive datasets produced through the aggregation of crowdsourced, social, and other digitally available data. While the data itself may not be new, the ability to rapidly aggregate and analyze previously unheard of combinations of data has led to an increased focus on its importance to social explanation. Geographers have contributed to big data studies by incorporating the spatial dimension that is increasingly attached to such data and, in turn, exploring the ways big data has come to mediate the urban experience (Batty 2012).

The Web is massively uneven in terms of participation and representation. A small number of people are both powerful gatekeepers and produce the bulk of content, while the voices of the majority are largely left out. These phenomena are not unique to the geoweb; geographies of information and knowledge have always been uneven and have always been produced by (and have been producers of) power and privilege.

Although many speculated that the Internet would offer the potential for reconfigurations of these patterns, we increasingly see that digital divides often just reproduce, replicate, and reinforce earlier offline geographies. This unevenness increasingly matters as online information augments and is woven into everyday life.

However, the particular asymmetries in the representation and production of spatial information on the geoweb remain opaque and often hidden. This session will focus on the geographies, networks, and power relations of the digital inequalities of the geoweb. We hope to attract research at a range of scales (from the household to the national level) and contexts. Possible topics could include:

– Gatekeepers of digital information
– Demographic or geospatial inequalities
– Invisible exploitation of virtual labor
– Quantitative studies of geoweb representation
– Qualitative studies and virtual ethnographies
– Studies of normative assumptions built into geoweb tools and platforms
– Studies of racialized, gendered, or otherwise exclusionary geoweb spaces
– Differences in internet accessibility (i.e. mappings of broadband or wireless penetration)
