The jihadists, who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, “opened fire” after security forces stormed a farm where the militants were hiding and preparing bombs, the ministry said in a statement. “An exchange of gunfire then took place, causing the deaths of five members of the terrorist cell while a police officer was injured,” it added. read more

Egyptian police said Saturday they have arrested a driver for raping a Russian tourist in a resort town, as the government cracks down on an epidemic of #sexual_harassment and violence. Police said the mini-bus driver raped the woman after pretending the vehicle had broken down, to trick her husband into getting off before speeding off with his intended victim. The incident took place in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm al-Sheikh, where the tourism ministry had previously shut down two hotels over alleged rapes. read more

A limited explosion occurred late Wednesday inside a car near a Cairo military hospital, Egypt’s interior ministry said, hours before the first anniversary of deposed president Mohammed Mursi’s military ouster. Police arrested one of two men who were in the car while the second managed to escape, interior ministry spokesman Hani Abdel Latif told AFP, adding that the cause of the blast was still unknown and there were no casualties. An Egyptian court acquitted six police on Saturday of killing protesters during the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak, as his now deposed Islamist successor #Mohammed_Mursi called for a “peaceful revolution” during his trial. Egyptian police used tear gas on Friday to end clashes in Cairo between supporters and opponents of ousted president Mohammed Mursi, the state news agency MENA said. Mursi’s supporters have been staging protests almost daily in many towns and cities across Egypt since the army deposed him on July 3 in response to mass protests against him. The Cairo clashes took place in the well-to-do district of Mohandeseen, when a march by Muslim Brotherhood supporters came face-to-face with an opposing crowd. read (...)
