Israel: Regime to investigate killing of Palestinian journalist

Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Israel’s army says it will investigate the death of a Palestinian journalist shot during clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces on Gaza’s border with Israel, local media report. Yasser Murtaja, a photographer with a Gaza-based agency, was wearing a clearly marked press vest when wounded on Friday, multiple sources confirmed. He died from his injuries in hospital — the 28th Palestinian killed in a week. An Israeli military spokeswoman said it was reviewing the incident. ‘The IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] does not intentionally fire on journalists,’ a statement said according to Israeli website Ynet News. ‘The circumstances in which journalists were hit, allegedly by IDF fire, (...)

Ces gens là, comme les nostalgiques de l’agression contre le Vietnam, n’apprennent, ne reconnaissent, jamais rien, et présentent toujours leurs ennemis comme suffisamment fous pour se prêter à leurs bombes nucléaires,

There’s a reason why some people call Israel’s army the “Israel Containment Forces.” For many years, including (or especially) the Second Lebanon War, the IDF did not truly aspire, as an army going to war must aspire, to defeat the enemy once and for all, in other words to neutralize its capacity to further endanger the lives of Israel’s citizens, soldiers and infrastructure.

NABLUS (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot and killed on Thursday after a stabbing attack at an Israeli military checkpoint north of the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, Israel’s army and media said.

An Israeli army spokesperson said that an assailant attacked a military vehicle before stabbing and injuring an officer when the forces exited the vehicle.

Israeli forces then opened fire on the assailant in response, killing him on site, according to Israeli media, which reported that a soldier was “very lightly injured."

The attack took place at a flying checkpoint set up by Israeli forces nearby the Palestinian village of Asira ash-Shamaliya, hometown of the alleged attacker who was identified by locals as Haitham Mahmoud Abd al-Jalil , 31.

Hours before, Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian near the Beit Einun junction northeast of Hebron after an alleged stab attempt.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that a Palestinian attempted to stab Israeli soldiers stationed near the junction, who responded by opening fire on the alleged assailant.

Witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli military forces prevented Palestinian Red Crescent medics from accessing the shot Palestinian for medical treatment. The man was identified as Muayyad Awni Jabbarin, 20, by his father, who arrived to the scene following his death.

Thursday’s deaths bring the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces over the last week to 12.

NABLUS (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot dead after a suspected vehicular attack near the Huwwara military checkpoint in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus, Israel’s army said.

A spokesperson for the Israeli army told Ma’an that an assailant ran his car into Israeli forces who were stationed on highway 60 near the Huwwara checkpoint for security purposes.

The forces opened fire on the man, killing him on scene, the spokesperson said.

The Palestinian was identified as Hassan Ali Hassan Bozor , 22 from the town of Arraba east of Jenin

One soldier was moderately wounded in the suspected attack and was taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israeli media reported.

Highway 60 is a major thoroughfare for Palestinians as well as Israelis living in illegal settlements, and the Huwwara area that lies on the route has been site to frequent confrontation between local Palestinians and Israeli military and settlers in recent months.

  • Hebron at eye of the storm as death toll rises
    Oct. 25, 2015 9:03 P.M. (Updated : Oct. 25, 2015 9:51 P.M.)

There are more than 500 settlers living in a cluster of illegal settlements through the Old City and a further 7,000 in Kiryat Arba, just east of central Hebron.

They live among nearly 200,000 Palestinians, under the protection of a vast Israeli military infrastructure that has carved up the city into Israeli and Palestinian districts.

Sitting outside Youth Against Settlements’ office, Abu Aisheh listened to the ceaseless din of clashes that rose from the Old City’s narrow streets below.

The night before, two Palestinian boys, aged 15 and 17, were shot dead at the edge of Kiryat Arba.

The Israeli army said they were attempting to stab a soldier at a nearby military checkpoint, but a local woman told Youth Against Settlements that the shooting was instigated by a notorious Israeli settler named Ofer Yahana.

Palestinians across Hebron agreed they heard between 50 and 100 gunshots fired. In a city that has been on the brink for years, few were surprised.

    Disputed attacks

Of the 10 Palestinians killed in Hebron since late September, Israel’s army has claimed that nine were attempting to carry out knife attacks when they were shot.

But Abu Aisheh does not believe the army’s account in at least half those cases.

Footage captured by Youth Against Settlements has raised serious questions over the army’s official version of several of the deaths — including that of 18-year-old Hadeel Hashlamon, who appeared to have no knife when she was gunned down at the end of September, and 19-year-old Fadi Qawasmi, who may have had a knife planted on his dead body by Israeli soldiers after he was killed by a settler.

More recently, on Sunday, Israeli border police shot dead 17-year-old Dania Irsheid outside the Ibrahimi Mosque, claiming they saw “a knife in her hand” — an account witnesses strongly contested.

Over the course of years, Hebron’s Palestinian residents have been given little reason to trust their occupying forces.

Youth Against Settlements’ staff and volunteers have been violently attacked by both soldiers and settlers dozens of times. They have been detained and had their equipment confiscated and destroyed.

After releasing the footage filmed after Qawasmi’s death, Israeli forces detained the group’s media coordinator, Ahmad Amro, for more than three hours, erasing all video footage he had at the time and warning him not to film or publish any more material.

Abu Aisheh said that it was dangerous work they performed. “They can shoot you when you are alone, and throw a knife next to you.”

  • Is killing civilians part of Israel’s plan?
    http://www.jonathan-cook.net/blog/2014-07-30/is-killing-civilians-part-of-israels-plan

Israel’s army is “degrading” – or “mowing the lawn”, in even worse military parlance – Gaza’s ability’s to resist. Not Hamas’ abilities, but Gaza’s. Because the problem lies not with Hamas. Hamas is simply a symptom, of the people of Gaza’s determination to liberate themselves from Israel’s siege.

That is why the power plant was destroyed yesterday. That is why Israel has been starving Gaza for years through its siege, limiting the entry of basic foods and counting the minimum calories people need for bare survival - putting them on a diet, as one senior adviser jokingly termed it. That is why Gaza’s infrastructure is being trashed - the notorious Dahiya doctrine, devised by Israeli generals in 2006 as way to force hostile populations back into the Stone Age, keeping them preoccupied with the essentials of life rather than demanding, or fighting, for their rights.

Israel revises children’s arrest tactics, but violations continue – UNICEF

Israel’s army is introducing reforms to how it arrests Palestinian children in the West Bank, the UN Children’s Fund said. The move comes amid international criticism after revelations of widespread mistreatment of detained Palestinian children.

United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) said in a statement that Israel was “taking steps” to address some of the problems outlined in a report released by the organization back in March. The report revealed that the Palestinian children detained by the Israeli military in the West Bank were “systematically” mistreated.

Seven months after the report was released reports of violations are ongoing, reports UNICEF, despite the 38 recommendations issued along with the report that would help to bring the treatment of children in line with international standards.

But, UNICEF noted that Israel had moved forward on the issue and is currently testing some of the newly reformed measures. The first measure deals with Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) issuing summons for children instead of making night arrests at home, “which can be traumatic for children and their siblings,” UNICEF said.

The other measure piloted has reduced the time a child can be detained before appearing in front of a military court for the first time. “The new order reduces the time from four days to 24 hours for children aged 12-13, and from four to two days for children aged 14-15. There is no change for children aged 16-17,” UNICEF stated.

Also, hearings for children are now held separately from adults.

In its March report, UNICEF said that each year some 700 Palestinian children aged 12 to 17 – mainly boys – are arrested, interrogated and detained by the Israeli army, police and security agents. The rights organization found examples of practices it called “cruel and inhuman.”

According to the report, the ill-treatment often begins at arrest, when children are woken by heavily-armed soldiers and then forcibly brought to an interrogation center “tied and blindfolded, sleep-deprived and in a state of extreme fear.”

The most common offense that children are arrested for is throwing stones at Israeli soldiers or Jewish settlers. In the majority of cases, the report pointed out, the principal evidence against the child is the child’s own confession, “extracted under duress.”

To get the children to confess, some interrogators threaten them with physical violence, death, “and sexual assault, against themselves or a family member.”
