The Petra News Agency published on Sunday what it described as exclusive comments from Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman which included a claim that Riyadh has provided 20 percent of the total funding to the prospective Democratic candidate’s campaign.
The report was later deleted and the news agency has not responded to requests for comment from Middle East Eye.
It is illegal in the United States for foreign countries to try to influence the outcome of elections by funding candidates.
The Washington-based Institute for Gulf Affairs has re-published the original Arabic Petra report, which quoted Prince Mohammed as having said Saudi Arabia had provided with “full enthusiasm” an undisclosed amount of money to Clinton.
“Saudi Arabia always has sponsored both Republican and Democratic Party of America and in America current election also provide with full enthusiasm 20 percent of the cost of Hillary Clinton’s election even though some events in the country don’t have a positive look to support the king of a woman (sic) for presidency,” the report quoted Prince Mohammed as having said.

Amman, June 13 (Petra) In response to what has been published by some media outlets as well as the social media regarding news that were attributed to Jordan News Agency (Petra), we would like to clarify the following: 1) A technical failure on Petra ’s website occurred for a few minutes on Sunday evening, June 12, 2016. Protection systems at the agency as well as the technical department noticed that and therefore, they suspended the transmission system and the electronic site and moved to the alternative website.
      2) Later, it became clear that the technical failure that occurred was and attempt to hack the agency’s transmission system and its website.
      3) The Agency was surprised to see some media outlets as well as the social media publishing false news that were attributed to Petra

According to the Middle East Eye news website, the report was later deleted from the agency’s website. However, a snapshot of the original Arabic version was later republished by the Washington-based Institute for Gulf Affairs.

“Saudi Arabia has always sponsored both Republican and Democratic Parties of America and… the kingdom also provides with full enthusiasm 20 percent of the cost of Hillary Clinton’s campaign in the U.S. presidential elections despite the fact that some influential forces within the country don’t have a positive look toward supporting the candidate because she is a woman,” the agency’s report quoted Prince Mohammed as saying.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and Shams Maan Company on Monday signed an agreement by which the former would buy from the latter electricity generated from solar energy with a capacity of 50 megawatts at the Maan Development Area (MDA).

Energy Minister Mohammad Hamed said that this project is the first of its kind in Jordan and the largest in the region regarding its 50-megawatt capacity. He noted that the project will provide 500 job opportunities during the building and installation phase, and another 50 during the operation and maintenance phase.

According to a ministry statement after signing the agreement, carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the investment value of this project will be around $150 million, which will produce 160 gigawatts of clean electrical power annually. The project is scheduled to operate in 2015.

Signing similar agreements with other producers will follow during the next two weeks, the statement said.

Hamed noted that most solar energy projects are located in MDA, with direct investment value of about $500 million, providing about 2,000 job opportunities in the building and installation phase, and 400 during the operation and maintenance phase during the project life of 20 years.

In May 2012, the ministry launched the first phase of direct tenders, which resulted in signing 30 memoranda of understanding with qualified companies to develop projects of wind and solar energies with total capacity of about 850 megawatts in different regions in the Kingdom.

Jordan on Tuesday signed a $24 million agreement with Arabia One for Clean Energy Investments to build a solar-run power generation plant.

The plant, which will be located in Maan, some 220km south of Amman, will have a total capacity of 10 megawatts, Energy Minister Mohammad Hamed told The Jordan Times.

“This project is of great importance to the country and is part of several projects that Jordan seeks to implement to increase the production of electricity through renewable energy,” the minister said.

The government will sign agreements with several local and international companies before the end of this month to build 10 solar energy projects with a total capacity of 140 megawatts, Hamed said in a phone interview.

Mohannad Khalifeh, chairman of Arabia One, said the company is owned by a group of Jordanian, South Korean and Spanish investors.

The plant is expected to be operational and connected to the grid in the last quarter of 2015, he told The Jordan Times over the phone.

The company reached an agreement with the government to sell it electricity from the plant at JD0.12 per kilowatt hour, Khalifeh added.

“Electricity generated through solar energy projects such as ours is much cheaper than energy produced through diesel or heavy fuel,” he noted.

On Monday, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry signed an agreement with the Shams Maan Company under which it will buy electricity generated by a solar power plant with 50-megawatt capacity at the Maan Development Area from the firm.

Hamed said the project is the first of its kind in Jordan and the largest in the region.

According to the ministry, the investment value of this project, which will produce 160 gigawatts of clean electrical power annually, will be around $150 million. The project is scheduled to be operational in 2015.

  • IAEA commends Jordan’s studies on planned nuclear plant | The Jordan Times

Le choix du site de la centrale approuvé à l’avance par la commission de l’IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has commended the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission’s (JAEC) assessment studies of the Kingdom’s planned nuclear plant.

In a letter sent last week, the IAEA recommended that Jordan be considered a case model in conducting assessment studies for locations of nuclear plants.

The letter came following a visit of a delegation from the IAEA-affiliated International Seismic Safety Centre to the Kingdom.

According to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the IAEA also recommended that countries wishing to build nuclear reactors make use of Jordanian expertise in the field.

The agency cited the high safety requirements set by JAEC when selecting the location of the nuclear plant, Petra said.

Jordan followed the IAEA’s safety regulations to the letter, the agency said, requesting JAEC’s permission to promote its experience in selecting nuclear plant locations to other countries, according to Petra.

IAEA delegates are scheduled to visit Jordan in April to further assess the studies conducted on the proposed site for Jordan’s planned nuclear plant, Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) President Majd Hawari said earlier this month.

IAEA experts will train JNRC personnel on conducting the environmental impact assessment required for the nuclear project.

Gov’t to sue electricity providers | The Jordan Times
    http://jordantimes.com/govt-to-sue-electricity-providers

The Cabinet on Sunday decided to sue the two electricity distribution companies for failure to “perform their duties during the snowstorm”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said.

The Cabinet took the decision after listening to a briefing by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Mohammad Hamed and President of the Electricity Regulatory Commission Thabet Taher, who stressed that the ministry and the commission’s role is purely regulatory and it is the responsibility of the Jordan Electricity Company and the Jordan Electricity Distribution Company to provide consumers with electricity.

The two officials were quoted by Petra as saying that the two companies should have “invested in modern equipment, technologies and control rooms”.

“The Council of Ministers express its disappointment at the obvious failure of the electricity distribution companies in the central and southern regions, leading to frequent blackouts, adding to the difficulties people suffered under the weather conditions that prevailed in the past few days,” Petra said.
