Teacher abducted from Malaysia subjected to beating, torture in Ankara: cellmate
#Alaaddin_Duman, a teacher in Malaysia who was abducted by Turkish intelligence agency over his links to the Gulen movement in 2016, has been subjected to beating, torture and death threats during pre-trial custody in Ankara, according his cellmate.
His cellmate, identified with his initials S.T. who has been recently released from prison. told journalist Fatih Akalan during a video interview on Saturday that Duman was threatened with death on several occasions.
S.T. also called on foreign governments to avoid extraditing Gulenists to Turkey where they face similar treatment.
Erdoğan implies Gülen will be abducted from Pennsylvania just like 6 Turks in Kosovo
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the US, will face the same end as six Turks who were abducted in Kosovo and removed to Turkey on March 29, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) on Thursday abducted six Turkish nationals, one doctor and five educators, working for a group of schools affiliated with the Gülen movement and removed them to Turkey the same day.
Hailing the MIT operation during a party meeting in İstanbul on Saturday, Erdoğan said: “The one [Gülen] who fled to Pennsylvania gets into a big flap. He wonders what his end will be. You will share the same end as those in Kosovo.”
Erdogan reiterated his words during a Sunday rally saying that Gulen “will come to Turkey, too. You can escape only for some time.”
Arrest warrant issued for exiled journalist Hayko Bagdat for insulting Erdogan
Arrest warrant has been issued for exiled journalist #Hayko_Bagdat for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Media reported March 30 that a Turkish court issued the warrant since Bagdat failed to show up for his trial over a column he wrote back in 2015.
Bagdat, in his column, claimed that Erdogan targeted journalists with his words such as “traitors,” and “collaborator of foreigners.”
Bagdat currently lives in self-exile in Berlin as hundreds of his colleagues have been jailed in Turkey very recently.
“Due to some assassination rumors, I have been living under heavy protection in Germany,” Bagdat told media.
Turkish court seeks Interpol warrant for exiled journalist #Can_Dundar
An İstanbul court on Monday issued an arrest warrant in absentia and sought an Interpol Red Notice for exiled Turkish journalist #Can_Dündar, the former editor-in-chief of the critical Cumhuriyet daily, over a story he published about Turkish intelligence trucks allegedly carrying weapons to radical groups in Syria.
Dündar had been arrested and jailed for 92 days along with colleague Erdem Gül for publishing a story on Turkish intelligence trucks carrying hidden weapons bound for Syria in early 2014. They were arrested on Nov. 26, 2015 and released on Feb. 26, 2016 pending trial following a Constitutional Court decision.
Shortly after his release and an armed attack against him, Dündar quit his position as editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet and left Turkey as scores of other journalists under pressure have done. Gül remains in the country and is free on his own recognizance while his appeal is in process.
Last March Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals overturned a five-year jail sentence for Dündar, saying he should instead face up to 20 years in prison on espionage charges.
The top court ruled that the lower court should have sentenced Dündar on espionage-related charges, which carry a 15 to 20-year sentence, rather than the lesser charge of disclosing confidential information. The court said Gül should be acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
Following the top court’s decision, Dündar’s dossier was sent to the İstanbul 14th High Criminal Court, which subsequently issued an arrest warrant in absentia for Dündar and also asked that Turkey’s Justice Ministry request a Red Notice from Interpol for Dündar and his extradition from Belgium.
Dündar has been living in Germany since June 2016.
Speaking to Deutsche Welle following the İstanbul court’s decision on Monday, Dündar said the court’s move is aimed at intimidating him, while he called on Interpol to examine Red Notice requests from Turkey with care because they are politically motivated.
The journalist also said he does not know why the Turkish court is seeking his extradition from Belgium and not Germany.
“I went to Belgium last week. Maybe they saw me there, I don’t know. You just get an idea about the situation of the Turkish judiciary from this,” said the journalist.

#Gabon police detain 5 ‘Gülenist’ teachers at Turkey’s request
Gabon police have detained at least five Turkish nationals working at a group of schools affiliated with the Gülen group, which is accused by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of masterminding a failed coup attempt in 2016.
Gabon is a country along the Atlantic coast of Central Africa.

Government spokesman: Turkish secret services seized 80 ‘Gulenists’ from 18 countries so far
A total of 80 people affiliated with Turkey’s Gülen group has been captured and brought to Turkey from 18 different countries, according to Turkish government spokesman Bekir Bozdağ.
“Up to today, the agency [Turkish National Intelligence Organization] have packaged up and delivered 80 FETÖ members from 18 countries,” Islamist newspaper Yeni Şafak quoted Bozdağ as saying.
FETÖ [Fethullahist Terrorist Organization] is a buzzword, coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to refer the the Gülen group as.
Turkish government accuses the group of masterminding the July 15, 2016 coup attempt although the latter denies involvement. More than 120,000 people have been detained and some 55,000 were put in pretrial arrest while over 145,000 have lost their jobs amid the government’s post-coup crackdown against people deemed to have ties to the group.
So far, a number of countries like Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Georgia and Myanmar handed over academics, businessmen and school principals upon the Turkish government’s request despite the fact that some of those victims already had refugee status with the United Nations.

After the arrival of the 13 Turkish nationals in İstanbul the police reportedly released the spouses and children of the teachers, who were taken to the police department for interrogation.

A high criminal court in the Turkish capital of Ankara has handed down a jail sentence of 18 years to #Alaaddin_Duman, a teacher who was extradited from Malaysia to Turkey due to his links to the Gülen group in 2016, on terror charges.
Duman was given the jail sentence by the Ankara 15th High Criminal Court on Tuesday on charges of membership in a terrorist organization.
In the final hearing of his trial, Duman denied the terror charges and said he was self-employed in Malaysia and did not use the mobile phone application ByLock, which Turkish authorities say is the top communication tool among followers of the Gülen group.
4,167 Gulenists in 110 countries under investigation in Turkey: report
At least 4,167 in 110 countries are being investigated in Turkey over their links to the Gulen movement, the state-run Anadolu news agency (AA) said Thursday.
AA said that an arrest request issued by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office for the three Turkish nationals, forcedly returned from Gabon to Turkey earlier this month, has revealed that Turkish prosecutors investigate 4,167 people in 110 countries over their links to the movement.
The three Gabon-based men were detained after being brought to Turkey in a joint operation by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and the local law enforcement.
The Istanbul prosecutor demanded that the court overseeing the trio’s case arrest them saying that 4,167 people including the three have been under investigation for some time.

25-year-old woman escapes Turkey’s witch-hunt as Bosnia grants asylum
A 25-year-old woman, identified as H.G., was granted asylum by Bosnian court which dismissed Turkey’s request for extradition, according to media.
Reuters reported on Monday that H.G. an appeal court in Bosnia last month ruled against the extradition of H.G. on the grounds that she had requested asylum in Bosnia before Turkey had asked for her extradition.
A source with the knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Turkey has requested the extradition of several more people who have arrived in Bosnia after the coup attempt.

Erdoğan’s foundation takes over 76 Gülen-affiliated schools in 10 countries to date
The #Maarif_Foundation, which was established by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government in 2016, has taken over 76 schools linked to the Gülen movement in 10 countries, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the Maarif Foundation took over Gülen movement schools in Guinea, Somalia, Sudan, People’s Republic of the Congo, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Tunisia, Senegal and Chad with their 8,506 students. The foundation also signed an agreement to take over Gülen movement schools in Afghanistan, which have more than 8,000 students.

Switzerland issues arrest warrants for 2 Turkish diplomats allegedly involved in plan to kidnap businessman in Zurich: report
The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland has issued arrest warrants for two Turkish diplomats for allegedly planning to kidnap a Turkish-Swiss businessman, according to the Swissinfo news website.
Diplomatic immunity reportedly does not apply to the men, who are also accused of espionage.
The office confirmed on Monday that they will arrest the Turkish nationals upon their entry to Switzerland.
At the time of the alleged incident, the two men worked for the Turkish Embassy in Bern, one as a press attaché, the other as second secretary. Neither men currently resides in Switzerland.
Criminal proceedings against the two diplomats have been ongoing since March 2017. They will not be granted diplomatic immunity, the foreign affairs ministry said three months ago, because the alleged crimes do not fall within the boundaries of diplomatic tasks.
The diplomats are accused specifically of having gathered political intelligence for another state and of having attempted to kidnap a Swiss businessman with Turkish roots.
The Swiss man is supposed to have been a supporter of the Gülen movement, which the Turkish regime says was responsible for a failed coup that took place in July 2016. The alleged kidnapping was attempted a month after the coup.
The Turkish foreign minister has denied the allegations.
Swiss officials had made clear to Turkish representatives that intelligence activities directed against the Turkish diaspora in Switzerland were unacceptable, the Swiss News Agency said on Monday.
511 German citizens scammed over alleged post-coup probes in Turkey
At least 511 German citizens were scammed out of 7 million euros in total, fearing investigations allegedly opened against them in Turkey.
Media reported Tuesday that 11 people were detained on fraud charges in Turkey’s resort province of Antalya. The detainees are accused of swindling German citizens who were tricked to giving away thousands of euros to ditch alleged, Turkey-originated investigations against them.
“An arrest warrant was issued for you over your support for FETO [short for alleged Fethullahist Terror Group]. In order for us to revoke the warrant, you are required to pay 12,500 euros,” victims had been told.
At least 511 German citizens have been scammed out of 7 million euros in total so far, media said.

Cambodian police keep Mexican-Turkish national in custody over Gülen links: report
Cambodian police have detained the Turkish-Mexican former director of a school run by the movement of US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gülen, who Ankara blames for a failed 2016 coup, his wife said on Friday, according to Reuters.
#Osman_Karaca, former director of #Zaman_International_School, was arrested by eight policemen while he was at a bank on Oct. 14 in the capital city of Phnom Penh, said his wife Grace Karaca, who fears he will be deported to Turkey.
“That’s the last we have heard of him,” Karaca told Reuters on Friday from Mexico, where she is living with her son.
The Mexican Embassy in Vietnam — it does not have one in Cambodia — confirmed the arrest in a letter and asked Cambodia’s Interior Ministry to provide information and let him communicate with a consul.
Cambodian Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak could not be reached for comment. Police spokesman Chhay Kim Khoeun declined to comment. Turkey’s Embassy in Phnom Penh did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Erdoğan accuses Gülen of orchestrating the coup attempt and has demanded the extradition of various people tied to Gülen’s movement — including staff at schools it funded worldwide. Gülen denies any connection with the abortive putsch.
At its peak, the Gülen movement operated schools in 160 countries, from Afghanistan to the United States. Since the coup attempt, Turkey has pressured allies to shut down Gülen-run establishments.
In Turkey’s three-year purge since the coup attempt, more than 77,000 people have been jailed pending trial and about 150,000 civil servants, military personnel and others have been sacked or suspended from their jobs.
Ankara has defended the clampdown as a necessary response to the scale of the security threat that Turkey faces, vowing to eradicate Gülen’s network.
Karaca, who was born in Turkey and holds a Mexican passport, was director of Zaman school until it was sold last year and has since been working as an educational consultant for the school, his wife said.
Nicholas Bequelin, Amnesty International’s regional director for East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific, urged the Cambodian authorities to either bring Karaca promptly before a judge or release him immediately.

Turkish Embassy in Phnom Penh files fraudulent request to extradite Mexican citizen of Turkish origin on coup charges: report by @nordicmonitor ||
The Turkish Embassy in Phnom Penh attempted to deceive Cambodian authorities to extradite Osman Karaca, a Mexican citizen of Turkish origin, due to his alleged ties to the Gülen group, the Nordic Monitor news website reported.
The Turkish government accuses the Gülen group of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt. The latter denies any involvement.
To secure his release from detention and ward off an attempt at an illegal extradition, the Mexican Embassy in Hanoi, accredited to Cambodia, had to convey a note verbale to prove Karaca’s Mexican citizenship and attached a copy of his passport in its communication to Cambodian authorities.
Karaca was detained in Phnom Penh on Oct. 14, 2019 by the Cambodian counterterrorism police at the request of the Turkish Embassy. According to the police report, the Turkish diplomatic mission provided a false notice to the police and accused Karaca of holding a fake Mexican passport, resulting in Karaca’s detention based on the embassy’s fabricated argument. The Turkish Embassy then demanded his deportation due to the lack of an international travel document.
The Mexican foreign ministry, its diplomatic mission in Hanoi and its honorary consulate in Cambodia are currently working towards ensuring the release of Karaca, a prominent businessman who acquired Mexican citizenship in 2018. Friends from the National Autonomous University of Mexico have already launched a campaign to prevent the extradition of Karaca to Turkey.
The Mexican Embassy in Hanoi informed the Cambodian interior and foreign ministries of Karaca’s nationality status and shared a copy of his Mexican passport via the note verbale dated Oct. 15.

Cambodia: Confirm whereabouts of forcibly disappeared Turkish-Mexican national
Amnesty International has received reports that a Turkish-Mexican dual national, Osman Karaca, has been forcibly disappeared following his arrest by the Cambodian police on 14 October. Nicholas Bequelin, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific, said:

Osman Karaca is the former director of the Zaman International School in Phnom Penh. According to his wife, he was arrested by counter-terrorism police on 14 October 2019 in Phnom Penh in response to a request by the Turkish authorities to the Cambodian government. This arrest occurred in the context of an international campaign of political reprisals against Turkish nationals living abroad by the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Mr. Karaca is a dual citizen of both Turkey and Mexico.
Since Karaca’s arrest, his family members have not been provided any information as to his fate and whereabouts. There are serious concerns regarding his safety and the protection of his human rights.

The Constitutional Court’s ruling that the jailing of journalists Şahin Alpay and Mehmet Altan during the trial violates their constitutional rights “is not the final decision,” Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has said.
Yıldırım told reporters on Jan. 12 that the local court will “give the right decision as it has the full knowledge about the case.”
According to the Turkish Constitution, the Constitutional Court is legally superior to lower courts and its rulings are binding, but its Dec. 11 decision on Alpay and Altan drew the ire of some ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) members.
Yıldırım, however, said debating the Constitutional Court’s ruling would not be in line with the principles of a state of law.
“Rushing to comment would be unfair to the court,” he added, noting that the top court merely ruled against the grounds for arrest during the trial.
The Constitutional Court’s decision covers the pre-trial detention period, before the preparation of the prosecutor’s indictment, and the process after the indictment should be left to the local court’s decision, Yıldırım said.

A draft bill proposed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has recommended imposing sanctions on who use the terms “Armenian genocide” and “Kurdistan” in addresses to parliament’s General Assembly.
The change comes as part of an 18-article draft bill, expected to be discussed at parliament next week, overhauling the internal regulations of parliament. The AKP says the changes are necessary to overcome what it says are opposition parties’ efforts to slow down legislative works. The draft bill includes sanctions for lawmakers who use the expression “Armenian genocide” while describing the 1915 killings of Armenians.

Turkey bans access to critical #Ahval news website
The Turkish Telecommunications Authority (BTK) on Wednesday imposed an access ban on the critical news website ahvalnews.com as the Turkish government’s crackdown on the press organizations continues at full speed.
The BTK barred access to Ahval citing Law No. 5651, approved by the Turkish Parliament in February 2014 to regulate Internet broadcasting. Ahval, which was established by veteran Turkish journalist Yavuz Baydar in November 2017, is known for its critical coverage of ongoing developments in Turkey, which has been under a state of emergency since a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

The state-run Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) has banned the broadcasting of a total of 208 songs, 142 Turkish and 66 Kurdish, on its 14 TV stations for reasons that were not made clear to the public.

Broken Trust : How a Failed Coup Weakens Turkey
The coup attempt that saw the Turkish state plunged into crisis has come at precisely the wrong time for Ankara. Just over the border in Iraq and Syria, critical challenges are mounting, as Turkey is drawn deeper into the fight to contain the Islamic State. Internally, Turkey is combating its own domestic Kurdish militant movement, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Because the coup emerged from within certain divisions of the military, the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) must now engage in heavy purges of the armed forces. This will make it difficult for Ankara to use the military as an instrument of policy and national strategy. The coup has been put down, but the aftershocks could hamstring Turkey for a long time to come.

Recent hikes in electricity costs have produced anger even among ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentarians, prompting a defense from the Energy Ministry.
Turkish residents have been reacting to the recent 6.8 percent hike in electricity prices, AKP Bursa deputy Cemalettin Kani Torun said during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Commission. “Almost half of the bill is for distribution costs.”
Electricity prices rose by 6.8 percent on Jan. 1 in Turkey.

All attention at the moment is on the Isis bomb on a Russian plane, claimed four times by Isis though some still doubt that the group is responsible. But a much less dramatic event may have greater long-term impact on the course of the civil war in Syria and Iraq. This is the victory of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the parliamentary elections on 1 November, a victory welcomed with effusive messages by no fewer than 15 different non-Isis armed opposition groups in Syria. Prominent among those congratulating President Erdogan is the Army of Conquest, which captured much of Idlib province earlier in the year and 90 per cent of whose fighters reportedly come from al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham.
Metin Gurcan, writing in the online magazine al-Monitor, points out that the Army of Conquest says in a statement that Erdogan and the AKP government have never abandoned their support for the Syrian revolution, despite domestic and foreign pressure. Mr Gurcan cites a well-informed Turkish authority saying many of these Syrian opposition “groups are trying to sign non-hostility pacts with Isis” – pacts that say they will not fight Isis unless attacked by them. Governments pretending to distinguish between “moderate opposition” and Isis in Syria should keep this in mind.

A senior member of Parliament from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has slammed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his party over Kurdish policies, BBC Turkish reported Oct. 18.
The AKP deputy, who spoke to BBC correspondent Paul Moss in Istanbul on condition of anonymity, directed “harsh criticism” at Erdoğan and the AKP, according to the report.
“It is very hard to understand why the government decided to attack the PKK. President Erdoğan is focused on increasing his votes, not to solve the Kurdish problem. I believe that the peace process may soon collapse and this would drive the country into chaos,” the AKP MP reportedly said.
Hürriyet had reported that Turkish fighter jets bombarded positions of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) late Oct. 13, following militant attacks on military outposts in southeastern Turkey, in a first since the start of the peace process.
Many provinces in Turkey’s east, as well as the largest cities of the country, saw violent protests against the government’s policies over the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL) advance on the Syrian border town of Kobane. Some 37 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the demonstrations.
The Kobane protests were seen by many observers as a potential risk for the peace process that the government started in 2013 to solve Turkey’s Kurdish problem.
İbrahim Yıldırım, who worked at the AKP’s Istanbul branch, on the other hand, supported the government’s decision to attack the PKK following the protests. “The PKK is still a terrorist organization. Thanks God none of our soldiers were killed, but they were targeted in terrorist attacks. Our Air Force didn’t plan the airstrike out of the blue,” he said, according to the BBC Turkish report.

The attack took place Wednesday night outside the offices of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul’s populous Beylikduzu district, Dogan news agency reported. Coskun Demirkol, who was running for a place on the district council in the March 30 polls, was gunned down by an unidentified individual and died at the scene.
