Let Us Mourn, Then Organize
Peter Dreier

We need new Democratic Party leadership. We need a progressive like Senators Elizabeth Warren or Dick Durbin, or Congressman John Lewis as the next head of the Democratic National Committee.
This is no time for liberals and progressives, Bernie Sanders supporters and Clinton followers, to point fingers. This is a time for cooperation and strategizing. Unions, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, the NAACP, community organizing groups, LGBT activists, and wealthy progressives must collaborate. Progressives must raise the moneyâhundreds of millions of dollarsâto send an army of paid organizers to key swing states and House districts now. We canât just parachute organizers into swing states a few months before the next election. We need to build on and expand the base by organizing ordinary people around local and national issues. We need to ramp up protest and engage in civil disobedience to stop Donald Trumpâs initiatives. And we need to register voters, so theyâll be âfired up and ready to goâ for the midterm elections in two years and the presidential race in 2020.
We need to lay the foundation for Democrats to take back the Congress in 2018, and then elect Elizabeth Warren president in 2020.
Mourn our losses. Then organize.

Despite the repeal of Donât Ask, Donât Tell (DADT) in 2011, and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 2013, total equality for the LGBT community is still a work in progress. One of the ways the Coast Guard is helping its LGBT members is by creating an open dialogue.
âPeople say I donât look âgay,ââ said Fairburn. âBut what does âgayâ look like?â
âWell, actually I look pretty âgay,ââ Lt. Cmdr. Hillary Allegretti, the executive officer of Marine Safety Office Cleveland, said as the audience erupted with laughter.
This was the beginning of the first-ever dialogue of LGBT equality amongst shipmates in the open setting of a leadership conference.
Allegretti, Fairburn and Petty Officer 1st Class Audrey Russo, a liaison officer at Coast Guard flight school in Pensacola, Florida, participated in a panel focused on LGBT equality in the Coast Guard during the Womenâs Leadership Symposium held at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in March 2016.

How pinkwashing leaves Israel feeling squeaky clean - Opinion Israel News | Haaretz
âșhttp://www.haaretz.com/opinion/.premium-1.603731
Now that suspected Jewish extremists have confessed to the murder of Palestinian teen Mohammed Abu Khdeir and are in police custody, it is only fair to look at the rumored scenarios that were spread before the Shoafat murder was seemingly solved â the ones speculating that the motive for the murder was an âhonor killing.â
The rumor that Abu Khdeir had been murdered for being gay was spread widely over the social networks and treated as proven fact. Whatever the source of the rumors, they were disseminated over the social networks â and not just by the far right.
People posted to Facebook, with absolute certainty, that this was the motive for the murder, and that the victim was known at the Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance (an LGBT organization in Jerusalem that had supposedly released a statement about his death). The executive director of Open House had to issue a denial, stating that the boy was unknown to the organization, which, in any case, had never issued any statement about him.
Despite the denials, photographs of the boy were posted online with the caption âThe Arabs killed him for being gay.â
Even if the people in custody are still defined as suspects â which means that the murder is not completely solved â it is important to remember that the fact so many people were quick to believe the gay rumors shows a wish to deny the possibility that we are also capable of murdering children out of extremist national hatred.
Yet the willingness to believe those rumors uncritically has another significance: The marking of Palestinians as barbaric and homophobic, as people who would murder their own children for being gay.
It is difficult to avoid comparing the attribution of Abu Khdeirâs murder to homophobes to the denial of homophobia after the 2009 double murder at the Bar Noar LGBT youth center in Tel Aviv.
When the police thought Hagai Felician was the perpetrator (he was indicted in July 2013 but released seven months later without charge), it attributed the murder to personal revenge, not homophobia. According to the narrative that was published at the time, Felician had received information that one of his relatives, a minor, had been seen at Bar Noar and had asked the relative what he had been doing there. The boy told him that he had indeed been there, and that he had been sodomized by a community activist and wanted to hurt him.
Many people cited this scenario (which was subsequently ruled out) as supposed evidence that the murder was not a hate crime, but an act of personal revenge.
On the other hand, most people who have experienced homophobia understood that it was a homophobic crime for two reasons: Because this narrative was one of homophobia within the family, and because indiscriminate gunfire on LGBT teenagers at Bar Noar â even had it been perpetrated by a person whose hatred had been instigated by personal motives â is not disconnected from the social constructs of heterosexism and homophobia.
The desire to deny familial and societal homophobia in the Bar Noar case, together with the desire to attribute the murder in Shoafat to homophobia, are evidence of the success of pinkwashing â the use of LGBT rights as propaganda to portray Israel as an enlightened democracy and Palestinian society as homophobic.
In one case, this ideology sought to deny homophobia as a motive in the Bar Noar murder and replace it with personal revenge. In another, it demanded that the murder of Abu Khdeir be attributed to homophobia, which would cleanse Israel â that supposedly liberal and democratic country â of the guilt of racism.
The fact that so many Israelis, some of them gay, convinced themselves and others that Abu Khdeir was murdered by his family for being gay shows how successful this propaganda has been not only abroad, but also here at home.

Klitschko forced the cancellation of the event, planned for Saturday, by denying police protection for participants. Today is International Celebrate Bisexuality Day
Posted on September 23, 2013 by Tom Janus

Since 1999, September 23 has been International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, also known as Bi Visibility Day. Even though studies show the âBâ in LGBT is the largest component, bisexual people often feel ignored, and removed from the LGBT movement.
âDespite years of activism and the largest population within the LGBT community, the needs of bisexuals still go unaddressed and their very existence is still called into question. This erasure has serious consequences on bisexualsâ health, economic well-being, and funding for bi organizations and programs,â a 2011 San Francisco Human Rights Commission report states.
Often, the word âbisexualâ shows up in an organizationâs name or mission statement, but the group doesnât offer programming that addresses the specific needs of bisexuals (see the chapter on organizations and programs serving bisexuals). Even when an organization is inclusive, the press and public officials often fall back on the âsafetyâ of saying just âgay and lesbian.â There is even a growing trend of talking about the âgay, lesbian, and transgenderâ community or âlesbian, gay, and transgenderâ movement. But words matter. Invisibility matters.

One year ago, queer activists and allies occupied the lobby of the center to protest this ban. Two organizers from the organization FIERCE perfomed an amazing spoken word piece at the demonstration that I felt beautifully, elegantly tied together the disparate struggles of anti-apartheid activists and those fighting for freedom for all people here in NYC. I asked if I could turn that piece into a comic, which I have been slowly working on since then. This March will represent the 2nd anniversary of that ban.

âGays are the new Jewsâ in Greece, claim campaigners amid escalating violence against the LGBT community in Athens
Campaigners are warning of escalating violence against gays in Athens, after knife-wielding neo-Nazis attacked a group of LGBT activists.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups in the Greek capital are âextremely alarmedâ about the escalating number of homophobic incidents in the city.
The Network for Recording Incidents of Racist Violence claims gay people are the ânew Jews in Greeceâ, with far right groups such as Golden Dawn fanning the flames of hatred against the LGBT community.
On Saturday (3 November), a gang of thugs who claimed to be members of the neo-Nazi party attacked a group of volunteers distributing anti-homophobic flyers in Keramikos/Gazi, a popular bar-cafe district.
According to Athens Pride, 12 men physically assaulted and terrorized the volunteers, chasing them through the narrow surrounding streets. It is believed that at least one of the attackers wielded a knife.
âWe call upon all international bodies and concerned citizens in Greece and abroad to condemn Golden Dawn and all manifestations of homophobia and transphobia in Greece,â said Andrea Gilbert, spokesman for Athens Pride.
âDemocratic freedoms cannot be allowed to collapse on the excuse of economic hardship.â
The attacks follow protests against the staging of a controversial play about the story of Christ in central Athens.
At one picket last month, Golden Dawn MP Ilias Panayiotaras launched a homophobic rant, shouting âWrap it up you little faggotsâ and âYour time is comingâ.

Tammy Baldwin makes history as first openly gay person elected to US Senate
Democratic candidates defeats Republican Tommy Thompson
07 November 2012 | By Greg Hernandez
Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin made history Tuesday (6 November) by becoming the first openly gay person to be elected to the US Senate.
Baldwin, who has represented Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives for seven terms, defeated Republican Tommy Thompson who is opposed to gay marriage. She replaces retiring Democrat Herb Kohl in the Senate.
âI am honored and humbled and grateful, and I am ready to get to work - ready to stand with Barack Obama, and ready to fight for Wisconsinâs middle class,â Baldwin told supporters at her victory party.â
Baldwin, 50, has said her sexuality has not been an issue on the campaign trail because voters in her state care more about such issues as the economy and jobs than their representativeâs love life.
But Baldwin has acknowledged the significance of a lesbian being elected to the US Senate. She has gotten used to making history in this regard starting with becoming the first lesbian elected to the Wisconsin Assembly then the first non-incumbent gay person elected to the US House of Representatives.
Baldwin recently told the British paper The Guardian: âWe never had an openly LGBT member of the US Senate and, even though there are strong pro-equality allies who serve there, it has always been a conversation about a group of people. So this changes everything.â
For fifteen years, her domestic partner was Lauren Azar, until the couple separated in 2010. They had registered as domestic partners in Wisconsin a year earlier.
Herndon Graddick, president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin were among the LGBT leaders enthusiastic about the result.
âTonight Tammy Baldwin made history and shone a bright light across America,â Graddick said in a statement. âNo longer is the United States Senate a place for only a select few but for every citizen, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Tammy Baldwinâs victory showed what a majority of Americans already know: that candidates should be judged on their qualifications for the job and not their sexual orientation.â
Said Griffin: âAs the first openly gay person elected to the United States Senate, she is a role model for LGBT youth and all young women across the country. With a relentless focus on the issues that matter most to Wisconsin voters â economic security, access to healthcare, and fairness and inclusion for all â Senator-elect Baldwin earned the respect of all her constituents, gay and straight.â

Two out of three gay Italians discriminated against
A survey by Rome county and European Union shows that 73% of LGBT people are victims of hate at school, at work and in everyday life
01 November 2012 | By Daniele Guido Gessa
Discrimination in Italy: 73% of LGBT people are victims of gay hate.
Two out of three lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Italians are still discriminated against, claims a survey of students and LGBT activists by Rome county, Provincia di Roma.
According to the study, 73% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Italians have been victims of some sort of discrimination at school, at work, among relatives and in everyday life.
The survey is part of a European project against discrimination. Called âNisoâ, it has also been carried out in Belgium, Holland and Estonia.
In Italy, the results are something new. Itâs the first time that an official study reveals such widespread gay hate in society.
According to the interviewees, the most discriminatory environments are the neighborhood (65%), school (59%) and group of friends (58%).
New media and social networks are a new environment of gay hate: 30% of the interviewees named the web as a source of discrimination.
More than a 1,000 people have been interviewed, with three Roman high schools analyzed by the researchers.
In general, transgender people and gay men think they face discrimination more than lesbian women. And 55% of them think that Italy is still a place where life is hard.
The research focused also on stereotypes. According to 40% of students, gay men are âeasilyâ recognizable by their clothes, voices and physical appearance.
On the opposite side, only 20% of students think that lesbian women are recognizable.

Equality Italia president Aurelio Mancuso launched a campaign for adoption by LGBT people.
The LGBT Italian association Equality Italia has launched a campaign to encourage single gays or lesbians, or same-sex couples to âadoptâ a child living in poverty abroad.
The campaign is called âIo ce lâho grande il cuoreâ or âMy heart is very bigâ and itâs thought to be the first of its type to target LGBT people.
Many Italians use âlong distance adoptionâ to support a child living in poverty in another country - though the âadoptionâ does not, of course, make them the legal parents or guardians of the child.

At this point, an apology is not enough. George has proven that he is out of touch with the progress of the LGBT movement in this city and country, and he should pass the torch to a new generation of Catholic leadership. Like Joseph Cardinal Bernardin before him, George has tried to use the churchâs power to keep back civil rights; Bernardin lobbied against Chicagoâs gay-rights bill in the 1980s, and George has spoken out against gay civil unions and womenâs rights.
