RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of 26-year-old Abed al-Rahman Barghouthi on Friday, a day after he was shot dead by Israeli forces outside the village of Abud northwest of Ramallah.

An official military procession, led by officers of the Palestinian National Forces, carried Barghouthi’s body from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to Abud, where he was laid to rest in the village ceremony following funeral prayers in the local mosque.

Barghouthi’s body was wrapped in a Palestinian flag and carried on mourners’ shoulders, a Ma’an reporter said.

Israel alleges that Barghouthi was attempting to attack an Israeli soldier when he was shot, but witnesses and relatives have insisted he was shot dead “in cold blood,” and did not pose any threat at the time.

“The Israeli occupation forces executed my nephew in cold blood after they stopped him at a checkpoint near the main entrance to the village,” Barghouthi’s uncle, Husni, told Ma’an during the funeral procession.

He said that Israeli soldiers had asked Abed al-Rahman to show them his identity card, and afterward fired six rounds at his neck and head. Husni said the soldiers “planted a knife near the body of his nephew after they shot him dead so as to justify their crime.”

Following the funeral, clashes quickly erupted between local youths and Israeli forces stationed near the main entrance to Abud, which was sealed with mounds of earth on Friday evening after Barghouthi was shot dead.

Barghouthi was reportedly a US citizen who had recently arrived in the occupied West Bank for his marriage.

Village residents told Ma’an on Friday that he was walking home from his fiance’s house when he was killed.

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Israeli forces on Thursday killed a 21-year-old Palestinian when clashes broke out during an arrest raid in the town of Qatanna northwest of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

Locals told Ma’an that forces stormed the Palestinian town at dawn, ransacking homes and detaining several residents.

Clashes erupted throughout the streets of Qatanna between young locals and Israeli soldiers carrying out the raid. Locals said that the forces fired live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and tear gas at the group.

During the clashes, Yahya Yusri Taha was shot in the head and left on the ground bleeding for more than an hour-and-a-half while Israeli soldiers denied Palestinian ambulances access to the young man to administer medical treatment, locals said.

The raid comes as part of an ongoing arrest campaign carried out by Israeli military forces throughout the occupied Palestinian territory.

Qatanna residents told Ma’an that hundreds of Israeli soldiers who entered the town carried out inspections house-to-house, forcibly gathering families in one room of each home while searches were underway.

In some cases, family members — including children, women and elderly members — were forced to wait outside of their houses, locals added.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that Israeli forces were arresting “suspects” from the town when “violent rioters” threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the forces.

At approximately 14:45, Israeli forces stationed at Hawarah checkpoint, south of Nablus, shot dead a Palestinian child who had crossed the checkpoint and was present at the intersection in front of a settler bus stop. Israeli forces claimed that the child had attempted to stab 2 settlers at the bust stop. However, investigations conducted by PCHR refuted the Israeli story, as the child went out of the checkpoint in front of Israeli soldiers. He was not carrying anything and the bust stop was empty then. The child was identified later as Alaa Khalil Hashash (16) , from new Askar refugee camp, northeast of Nablus. The gunfire resulted also in wounding Samah Abed al-Mo’men Ahmed Abdullah (18), from Amoriya village, southeast of the city. She sustained a bullet wound to the head, while sitting in her father’s car as they were going home from Nablus. At approximately 20:50, the aforementioned girl was transported by a Palestinian ambulance from Rafidya Hospital to Hawarah checkpoint to be then transported by an Israeli ambulance to Tel HaShomer Hospital in Israel.

Abed al-Mo’men Ahmed Abdullah, Samah’s father, said to PCHR’s fieldworker:
"At approximately 14:45 on Monday, 23 November 2015, I was driving my car with my wife Hala Ibrahim Abdullah (36) next to me and my children in the back seat: Ahmed (16), Hanin (17) and Samah (18). Samah was inbetween Ahmed and Hanin. We went out of Nablus heading to Amoriya village, southeast of the city. While getting out of Hawarah checkpoint, I entered the intersection area and saw a boy in blue sport outfit. He was not carrying anything. I thought he was a settler, but after I drove 20 meters ahead, right in front of a settler bus stop that was empty then, Israeli forces opened fire at the boy. He fell down before he reached the bus stop. They then opened fire from a watchtower and soldiers on the ground towards my car, as my car was the last one to cross the checkpoint. I lowered my head and then heard my son screaming, “Samah got killed”. I froze and Israeli soldiers gathered around us. A Palestinian ambulance arrived and took us to Rafidya Hospital, where my daughter was admitted to the operations room. She sustained a bullet wound to the forehead."

« Lafi n’est pas mort, » nous dit son ami Ahmad. « Il reste vivant à l’intérieur de chacun d’entre nous. Je peux le voir courir à l’air libre... Je peux entendre sa voix me questionner... »

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes in Beit Awwa west of Hebron, the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health said.

The ministry identified the Palestinian as 24-year-old Udaay Hashim al-Masalma , and said that doctors in Hebron’s public hospital confirmed a bullet to the head was the cause of death.

An Israeli army spokesperson alleged that Masalma was shot after he attempted to stab an Israeli soldier during a “violent riot” in Beit Awwa.

She said the soldier “responded with live fire,” and that the Palestinian was evacuated for medical treatment by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

She added that the Israeli soldier was lightly injured, and as far as she was aware, had not been evacuated for medical treatment.

Israeli news site Ynet reported that “the attacker threw himself on the troops who fired upon and killed him.”

Locals confirmed that there were clashes in Beit Awwa shortly before Masalma’s death, during which Israeli troops fired tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steeel bullets at Palestinians protesters.

Masalma brings the Palestinian death toll since the beginning of October to 44. Around half of those have died during clashes, while the other half were killed after allegedly attempting attacks on Israel.

Next week, when Fabius travels to Tehran, it also happens to be Support of Hemophilia week, and this is in remembrance of losing our compatriots to the infected blood that was imported [to] our country. And the main cause of that was Fabius,” Iranian analyst Mojtaba Zolnour said to Fars News on July 23.
Zolnour’s reference is to an account in the 1980s that many Western media are unaware of. In 1999, former Prime Minister Fabius and an ex-minister were acquitted of manslaughter for delaying the testing of blood meant to treat patients of hemophilia. Health Minister Edmond Herve was convicted but was never sentenced. While a US company’s blood screening was available at the time, the French government was accused of waiting for a French competitor to conduct the tests. The case arose when in 1991 French doctor and journalist Anne-Marie Casteret accused the three of knowingly distributing blood tainted with HIV in 1984 and 1985.
According to Iran’s Ministry of Health, approximately 300 Iranians were infected with the tainted blood. Despite the acquittal, which some of the 4,000 French victims were angered by, some Iranians have not forgotten the affair.
