  • Calling Canada’s bluff on helping Gaza’s child victims | Toronto Star
    http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/08/12/calling_canadas_bluff_on_helping_gazas_child_victims.html

I have just returned from #Israel, where I spent two days in an Israeli jail and under Israeli interrogation. I was attempting to enter the #Gaza Strip as part of a joint Palestinian Ministry of Health and NGO initiative to receive emergency assistance from specialists including trauma and emergency (my speciality).

As always, my documentation was in order. No cogent reason was given for my denial, and I was expelled after being strip-searched and escorted by police as though I were a criminal. This for trying to enter a place that Israel claims it no longer occupies, a claim disputed by the United Nations and every other international legal body.

Before departing for Tel Aviv, I asked for assistance from Ottawa. An official at the Department of Foreign Affairs responded to me directly by email that “neither we in Ottawa nor the Canadian Embassy in Tel Aviv can assist in facilitating the entry of Canadians into the Gaza Strip.”

This was not a boilerplate advisory by an uninterested bureaucrat. This was a specific response to me by the official who managed my arrest a year ago when I was also trying to enter Gaza. The message was clear:

#Canada will not help doctors enter Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid and medical care.

Le génocide progressif d’Israël dans le ghetto de Gaza
    Ilan Pappe
    http://www.info-palestine.eu/spip.php?article14710

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Israeli airstrikes and shelling killed 37 people across the Gaza Strip on Sunday morning, as the 27-day assault on Gaza showed no signs of ceasing despite Israeli moves to redeploy outside of urban areas the day before.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza said that the 37 dead since midnight — which includes 10 members of a single family in Rafah — brought the total death toll to 1,739, with nearly 10,000 injured and a quarter of the total population of 1.8 million displaced.

The 10 family members were killed during an Israeli air strike on the al-Ghoul family home in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood in Rafah.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Health Ashraf al-Qidra identified nine of the victims as Muhammad Ismail al-Ghoul, Wael Ismail al-Ghoul, Ismail Muhammad al-Ghoul, Ismail Wael al-Ghoul, Khadra Khalid al-Ghoul, Asmaa Ismail al-Ghoul, Malak Wael al-Ghoul, Mustafa Wael al-Ghoul, Hanadi Ismail al-Ghoul .

    Intense airstrikes overnight

The Ministry of Health said that airstrikes and shelling across the Gaza Strip had been intense overnight.

An Israeli raid on home of Abu Jazar family in Rafah killed 23-year-old Amani Abu Jazar and her toddlers Maria and Faris Abu Jazar. Issa al-Shaer and Saed Mahmoud al-Lahwani were killed in the same raid.

Muhammad al-Hour was killed and four others were injured shortly before dawn prayer in Rafah.

The body of Ibrahim Qishta was recovered from the rubble of a house which Israeli forces bombarded Saturday in eastern Rafah.

In the northern Gaza Strip, Israeli warplanes struck the home of the Abu al-Qumsan family in Jabaliya Sunday morning, killing Hatim Abdul-Rahman Wahdan, 50, Sanyura Wahdan, 27 and Jamila Wahdan, 24 . Ten others were injured.

Four Palestinians were killed and 12 others were injured Sunday morning in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.

Witnesses said that an airstrike hit the home of the Khattab family, killing Atwah Suleiman Khattab, 64, Muhammad Atwah Khattab, Rimas Salim al-Attar, and another woman who hasn’t been identified yet.

Another airstrike on Deir al-Balah killed a man and injured several others.

In the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, Israeli attacks killed two Palestinian men and injured three others when a missile hit home of Abu Shalouf family in the western quarter of the city.

At least fifteen people were injured by Israeli artillery shelling at Shuhada al-Zaytoun mosque in the Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City.

  • US resupplies Israel with weapons as Gaza death toll hits 1,395 | Maan News Agency / Published today (updated) 31/07/2014 16:58

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — The United States confirmed it had restocked Israel’s supplies of ammunition, hours after finally sharpening its tone to condemn an attack on a United Nations school in Gaza that killed 16 people sheltering there.

Israeli airstrikes and shelling continued overnight and into the morning leaving 27 Gazans dead and dozens injured, bringing the 24-day death toll to 1,395 with 8,100 injured, according to the Ministry of Health. The Israeli military confirmed that 20 “sites” had been hit overnight.

The dead included six people, including Majdi Fseifis, 22, Hani Abduallah Abu Mustafa, 44, Naji Abdullah Abu Mustafa, 31, Hanan Youssef Abu Tiema, Maher Najjar, and Mahmoud Fuad Najjar killed in a bombing that hit a crowd of people near a mosque in the Abasan area east of Khan Younis.

Two were killed in an Israeli strike on a car, identified as Hamza al-Haddad and Ibrahim al-Haddad .

Abudallah Abu Shabab, 20, and Alaa Alwah, 22 , succumbed to wounds they sustained in Gaza City attacks.

Also in Khan Younis, one Palestinian was killed and four were wounded in a strike that hit a motorcycle in the Ma’an area south of the city.

Mahdiya Suleiman Omar Abu Luli, 58 , was killed in an Israeli strike on Khan Younis as well.

Maha Abd al-Nabi Salim Abu Hilal was killed in a strike on her home that also “seriously” injured her husband and three children. She was brought to Abu Yousef al-Najjar Hospital.

Suleiman Baraka, 31, and Aref Baraka, 58 , were also killed in a strike, and their bodies were both brought to the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital in Deir al-Balah.

At least 55 were wounded after the al-Hamoud house in Beit Lahiya was hit at dawn. Injuries were also reported during an Israeli strike on the home of the al-Haw family as well as against Block 7 in Jabaliya.

Israeli aircraft also targeted a house east of al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip belonging to Abu Abdullah Abu Huwayshal, destroying it completely.

Violent clashes broke out between Palestinian fighters and Israelis forces in the Nabahin field east of al-Bureij.

The dead overnight included Yusuf Ibrahim, 19 , son of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs who died of wounds sustained in an Israeli attack on Nuseirat refugee camp the day before. Ahmad al-Luh died early Thursday in al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital as a result of injuries as well.

The deaths in the besieged Gaza Strip come on the 24th day of an Israeli assault which has nearly topped the death toll from the 2008-9 Cast Lead, the bloodiest attack on the area in memory when Israel killed 1,400 in 22 days.

  • More than 100 killed in Gaza in last 14 hours | Maan News Agency
    http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=716827

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — The Palestinian Ministry of Health on Tuesday afternoon said that more than 100 Palestinians had been killed in the Israeli bombardment on Tuesday alone, bringing the total past 1,200 as hundreds of thousands fled their homes across the Strip.

Earlier statements from the ministry had given the number of dead at around 57 for the morning, but after consultation with hospitals across the Strip the total was revised to more than 100 dead and hundreds more injured.

The Ministry of Health also said that as of Monday night nearly 5,000 homes had been completely destroyed, while tens of thousands more had been partially destroyed.

The United Nations, meanwhile, estimated that more than 215,000 Gazans had fled their home, or more than 10 percent of the besieged coastal enclave’s total population.

Late Monday, Israeli authorities had given 400,000 Gazans evacuation orders, but with all the borders closed and the Israeli bombardment and ground invasion continuing in the northern, central, and southern Gaza Strip, the vast majority had nowhere to go except UN shelters.

Last week, however, Israeli shelling hit at least four UN-designated shelters, killing more than 20 and injuring hundreds.

  • Amid Gaza ceasefire calm, 135 dead bodies found | Maan News Agency
    http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=716313

(...) Ambulances, rescue teams, and families fanned out across the coastal enclave to search for the injured and for loved ones, particularly in the eastern outskirts that have been subject to intense Israeli fire in recent days.

Ministry of Health spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said at 7:00 p.m. that 135 dead bodies had been pulled out of the rubble so far.

Only two of the bodies have been identified thus far, he said, naming them as Abdul-Rahman Audah al-Tilbani and Arafat Abu Aweily . The two came as six bodies were found early Saturday, one in the central Gaza Strip and one in the Shujaiyya neighborhood of Gaza City.

Al-Qidra told Ma’an that Israeli forces had refused to allow ambulances and rescue teams access to the village of Khuzaa and other border areas in order to look for survivors and dead bodies.

The Lebanese al-Mayadeen satellite TV reported that at least ten dead bodies were pulled from debris in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip.

The channel quoted sources in the International Red Cross Committee as saying that rescue teams and ambulances were unable to access Khuzaa and that coordination with the Israeli forces was underway.

An Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma’an that Palestinians in the Khan Younis area had been told to leave their homes days ago and told not to return during the ceasefire, and that therefore rescue teams were “not allowed to search” in parts of the southern Gaza Strip.

Khuzaa has been subject to heavy Israeli shelling in recent days, with dozens killed and many more thought to be buried under the rubble since teams have been unable to access the bodies.

  • Lebanon: Tripoli’s Real ‘Alley’ Battle Has Yet to Begin
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/lebanon-tripoli%E2%80%99s-real-%E2%80%98alley%E2%80%99-battle-has

The militants in the North Lebanon city of Tripoli are furious. They have been told that the Ministry of Health, since the beginning of 2014, has stopped covering their medical bills in the city’s hospitals. They are also furious because of the roughness the army showed in the last confrontation.

During that confrontation, the army, perhaps for the first time, responded violently to the source of fire, targeting the so-called “alleyway commanders” of the militants directly. The army even tried to bring in tanks to Bab al-Tabbaneh, before it named the suspects accused of assaulting its soldiers in an official statement, in what may be a hint for other security services to arrest them rather than continuing to give them cover.

At the same time, the militants in Tripoli have been informed that army intelligence chief for North Lebanon, Gen. Amer al-Hassan, during a security meeting at Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s home to discuss the new round of violence, had a markedly different attitude. Hassan voiced sharp criticisms against some of those present, and made threats against the militants.

Add to this the militants’ major disillusionment with Saad Hariri, after the latter gave a green light to security services to crackdown on anyone disturbing the peace in the city. Then there’s the fact that retired General Ashraf Rifi could not be reached for the past two days, ever since Rifi called on the supporters of the “Cedar Revolution” to reassess the current stage, in a message posted on the Lebanese Forces website.

Since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, epidemics of birth defects and cancers are rising in many Iraqi cities. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Iraqi Ministry of Health (MoH) undertook a large-scale epidemiological study to determine the prevalence of birth defects in the Iraqi population. A report which appeared on the WHO website in September 2013, claims that “The rates for spontaneous abortion, stillbirths and congenital birth defects found in the [Iraq] study are consistent with or even lower than international estimates.” This article discusses the severe shortcomings of this report and questions its reliability .
