ONCE they were sworn enemies. Now Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency is working with Saudi officials on contingency plans for a possible attack on Iran if its nuclear programme is not significantly curbed in a deal that could be signed in Geneva this week.

Both the Israeli and Saudi governments are convinced that the international talks to place limits on Tehran’s military nuclear development amount to appeasement and will do little to slow its development of a nuclear warhead.

As part of the growing co-operation, Riyadh is understood already to have given the go-ahead for Israeli planes to use its airspace in the event of an attack on Iran.

Both sides are now prepared to go much further. The Sunni kingdom is as alarmed as Israel by the nuclear ambitions of the Shi’ite-dominated Iran.

The Turkish-Israeli relationship became so poisonous early last year that the Turkish government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is said to have disclosed to Iranian intelligence the identities of up to 10 Iranians who had been meeting inside Turkey with their Mossad case officers.

Knowledgeable sources describe the Turkish action as a “significant” loss of intelligence and “an effort to slap the Israelis.” The incident, disclosed here for the first time, illustrates the bitter, multi-dimensional spy wars that lie behind the current negotiations between Iran and Western nations over a deal to limit the Iranian nuclear program. A Turkish Embassy spokesman had no comment.

    (...)

Top Israeli officials believe that, despite the [Israel’s] apology, the severe strain with Erdogan continues. The Turkish intelligence chief, Hakan Fidan, is also suspect in Israel because of what are seen as friendly links with Tehran; several years ago, Israeli intelligence officers are said to have described him facetiously to CIA officials as “the MOIS station chief in Ankara,” a reference to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The United States continued to deal with Fidan on sensitive matters, however.

  • Detained Lebanese in Nigeria Plead Their Case
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/detained-lebanese-nigeria-plead-their-case

The Lebanese community in Nigeria is not doing well. After three of its members were arrested on charges of “terrorism” and working for Hezbollah, demonization of the community began in earnest among natives, and it is likely that Israeli fingers are not far from this.

    […]

Decades passed before Israel, with the Mossad and its foreign lobbies, reared its ugly head again to fight these Lebanese, this time in the diaspora. Now, Israel is trying through the local media to have the Lebanese there branded, en masse, as terrorists.
Mustafa Fawwaz, Ahmad Tahini, and Talal Rawda have been detained for more than four months in Nigeria, on charges of “possession of weapons and engaging in terrorist activities.” But according to individuals close to the detainees, the Mossad fabricated these charges. The three men’s defense attorneys confirmed this, saying that the detainees told them men from the Mossad, who were neither Nigerian nor African, had directly questioned them.

Naturally, the damage has not been limited to the three Lebanese, but affected the whole Lebanese community. According to many in the community, “What happened is only the beginning of a series of reprisals by the Israelis, who believe they can harm Hezbollah by doing this.”

  • Dubious Intelligence and Iran Blackmail: How Israel is driving the US to war in Syria | Max Blumenthal
    http://mondoweiss.net/2013/09/dubious-intelligence-and-iran-blackmail-how-israel-is-driving-the-us-to-

Oddly, neither outlet was able to reproduce audio or any quotes of the conversation between the Syrian officials. Channel 2 did not appear to cite any source at all – it referred only to “the assessment in Israel” – while Focus relied on an unnamed former Mossad official for its supposed bombshell. The definitive nature of the Israeli intelligence on Ghouta stood in stark contrast to the kind introduced by other US allies, which was entirely circumstantial in nature. At the same time, it relied on murky sources and consisted of vague assertions.

The Assad regime may indeed be responsible for the Ghouta massacre, but Israel’s military-intelligence apparatus does not exactly have a reputation for trustworthiness. (Consider, for example, the Israeli army’s shameless attempt to link the Gaza Freedom Flotilla to Al Qaeda by plastering Israeli media with crude and easily discredited propaganda, always sourced to anonymous national security officials.) Yet in his determination to see the US attack the country he recently referred to as “Iran’s testing ground,” Netanyahu appeared to be succeeding in his campaign to bring Obama’s red line back into focus.

    […]

The threat of a unilateral Israeli strike on Iran if the US does not act on Syria is slowly seeping into American media, and will almost certainly grow more pronounced this week as pro-Israel pundits and members of the Obama administration unite on their message. AIPAC may also join the push for congressional authorization, a move the night flower-style lobby managed to avoid during the run-up to invading Iraq. If the Israel lobby is forced into the open, it could hold the prospect of an attack on Iran like a gun to the heads of members of Congress, warning them that the price of inaction is a regional conflagration.

    http://www.info-palestine.eu/spip.php?article13914

    http://www.rfi.fr/afrique/20130831-immigres-illegaux-africains-israel-seront-expulses-vers-ouganda

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/28/israeli-intelligence-intercepted-syria-chemical-talk

The bulk of evidence proving the Assad regime’s deployment of chemical weapons – which would provide legal grounds essential to justify any western military action – has been provided by Israeli military intelligence, the German magazine Focus has reported.

The 8200 unit of the Israeli Defence Forces, which specialises in electronic surveillance, intercepted a conversation between Syrian officials regarding the use of chemical weapons, an unnamed former Mossad official told Focus. The content of the conversation was relayed to the US, the ex-official said.

    Selon nos propres informations, il y a deux branches, à l’« Unité 8200 » :
    – celle qui tente de minimiser les arrestations de leurs espions au Liban en refilant aux journaux occidentaux des sujets super-émouvants sur les Israéliens qui font la queue pour obtenir des masques à gaz ;
    – celle qui emploie des acteurs parlant vaguement arabe pour interpréter les plus grands succès du monde du renseignement (« Ben Laden commande un chapeau de cow-boy », « Hassan Nasrallah ordonne l’assassinat de Rafic Hariri », « Le Hezbollah organise des attentats en Bulgarie », et bientôt célèbre : « Bachar Assad veut gazer tout les Syriens sauf les alaouites »…).

  • Israel Targets “Hezbollah Cells” in Nigeria
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/israel-targets-hezbollah-cells-nigeria

Israel has always paid special attention to Nigeria, having signed several trade and industrial agreements with the African country. Yet since 2006, visits by Israeli presidents and security officials to Nigeria focused on signing security agreements and finalizing weapons deals. Nigeria specialists say that the Mossad’s close relations with Nigerian security agencies is not concealed in any way.

Israel hopes to accomplish several goals with these accusations. It seeks to pressure international, and especially European, public opinion to list Hezbollah, or at least its so-called armed wing, as a terrorist group. Another aim is to create fissures in Hezbollah by falsely accusing Lebanese businessmen and shutting down their businesses.

The US and Israel have different ways of targeting Lebanese in Africa. While the US treasury department accuses Lebanese of supporting terrorist organizations, Israel colludes with African security agencies to fabricate charges.

      http://www.info-palestine.eu/spip.php?article13711

  • Mossad, Shin Bet chiefs to Netanyahu: Foreign Ministry strike hurting national security - National Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper
    http://www.haaretz.com/news/national/mossad-shin-bet-chiefs-to-netanyahu-foreign-ministry-strike-hurting-nationa

Mossad chief Tamir Pardo, Shin Bet head Yoram Cohen and Defense Ministry director general Udi Shani have told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the Foreign Ministry diplomats’ strike was harming national security.

According to a senior official, at a meeting on Thursday the three top security officials gave Netanyahu, who is also serving as foreign minister, and Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin, examples of the harm they said the strike had done in a few cases in recent weeks.

The meeting took place at the end of another security discussion at the Prime Minister’s Office. The senior official who participated in the meeting said the security chiefs urged Netanyahu to intervene and find a solution that will end the workers’ strike.

Over the past few days ties have become significantly more strained between Foreign Ministry diplomats and the security establishment. The Foreign Ministry’s workers committee has instructed Israeli diplomats to cease cooperating with the IDF and the Shin Bet, after members of those two bodies crossed the picket lines to help arrange Netanyahu’s visit to Poland. After hearing the officials, Netanyahu ordered that legal means be examined for ending the strike. The senior officials said one possibility being studied was to ask the National Labor Court to issue back-to-work orders.

The Foreign Ministry’s workers’ committee said that if the security establishment is claiming harm to national security, then it was even more surprising that Netanyahu had not bothered to open a dialogue with the Foreign Ministry staffers to resolve the crisis.

Although the diplomats have ratcheted up their sanctions in recent weeks, no talks are currently underway to end the dispute.

A no-confidence motion is to be presented today in the Knesset by MK Isaac Herzog (Labor ) over the strike. On Tuesday morning, Foreign Ministry workers are planning a protest march to the Knesset gates. Shortly after the protest, a special discussion is scheduled of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on the matter of harm to the Foreign Ministry’s status. The diplomats began their sanctions in March, protesting erosion in their wages and what they say is the “dismantling of the Foreign Ministry.” They are protesting that no appointment has been made of a foreign minister and that the ministry’s powers have been relegated to several other ministers.

Sanctions include the refusal to issue diplomatic passports to ministers, the halt to cable communications between Israeli diplomatic missions worldwide and the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, and the refusal to help with arrangements for ministers visiting foreign countries.

    http://www.lorientlejour.com/article/815967/-brusquement-les-rebelles-nous-ont-attaques-par-derriere-.html

    – les gens qui se « confient » aux journalistes ont un agenda politique ou pécunier et n’hésitent pas à présenter leur version des choses comme une vérité authentique ;
    – il est très facile de rencontrer d’« authentiques » combattants du Hezbollah qui deviendront, le temps d’une interview et contre un petit salaire, votre meilleur confident ;
    – selon un mystère encore inexpliqué, c’est toujours aux médias qui sont le plus hostile au Hezbollah que ses « authentiques » membres vont se confier.

« Une source proche de… », ça n’a rigoureusement aucun sens.

« Israel knows one important thing about the Assads : for the past 40 years, they have managed to preserve some form of calm along the border.

Last week’s attacks were a case in point. Israel did not hesitate to order air strikes when it had intelligence that arms were going to be funneled from Syria to Hezbollah. (…) But parallel with that messaging, Israel also made overt and covert efforts to communicate to Assad that Jerusalem was determined to remain neutral in Syria’s civil war. The fact that those messages were received in Damascus was reflected in the relatively restrained response from the Assad regime : a mid-level Foreign Ministry official offered a public denouncement of Israel — and even then the Syrian government offered only a vague promise of reprisal, vowing to respond at a time and in a manner of its choosing. »

Report: Zygier sabotaged mission to retrieve remains of IDF soldiers - Israel News, Ynetnews
    http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4377298,00.html

Australian news network ABC reported that the “reckless indiscretion” of the late Mossad agent Ben Zygier, known as “Prisoner X,” led to the abortion of a secret mission aimed to return to Israel the bodies of three IDF soldiers.

Israeli servicemen Zachary Baumel, Yehuda Katz and Tzvi Feldman have been missing since the Battle of Sultan Youcoub during the first Lebanon War. It was known the three Israeli tank crewmen were captured and killed by Syrian forces during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982.

Lebanese national Ziad Al Homsi told ABC that he was recruited by Mossad in 2007 to take part in an elaborate mission by the Israeli agency to exhume the remains of the three soldiers.

ABC cited Al Homsi as claiming Mossad operatives gave him the exact location of the graves. His job was to organize for them to be exhumed and for the remains to be left at a location disclosed to a second Mossad-sponsored group, who would take over the recovery.

However, in 2009 he was arrested for espionage by Lebanese security forces, which led to the abortion of the entire operation. He was sentenced to 15 years in jail, getting out after only serving three. It remains unclear whether he was, as he claimed, a double agent working for the Lebanese security services to sabotage Israeli efforts, and that his contacts with Mossad were supported and monitored by the Lebanese all along.

It appears that in 2008, in an attempt to revive his fading career as a spy, Zygier, a dual Israeli-Australian national, set out on a mission in the course of which he tried to persuade a Hezbollah operative to become a double agent for Israel. Pressed for his own credentials, Zygier cited Al Homsi as being a double agent for the Israeli agency, thereby compromising the Lebanese man’s cover.

Following his January 2010 arrest, Zygier was incarcerated in complete isolation at the Ayalon Prison in Ramla. He had died in a high-security cell in late 2010. According to official documents, he committed suicide and a recent State probe into the matter ended with no indictments.

    ’State’s fault’
Following the publication, relatives of the missing soldiers were unimpressed with what they perceived to be an attempt by the secret services to link the failure to retrieve the soldiers’ bodies to the controversial “Prisoner X.”

“For 30 years we are hearing about the missing soldiers from the Battle of Sultan Youcoub, but it’s not Zygier’s fault they never found my brother and the other two men; it is the State’s fault,” Farhiya Heiman, the sister of Yehuda Katz, told Ynet.

“I am aware of the reports and I do not find there is reason to delve into the details too much,” she added.

Report : Zygier planned to pass info to Hezbollah - Israel News, Ynetnews
    http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4360818,00.html

At the time of his arrest, Ben Zygier, also known as ‘Prisoner X,’ was carrying a disk containing sensitive information, which he planned to pass onto a Hezbollah informant, the Sydney Morning Herald reported on Monday.

According to the report, Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah knew about Zygier’s communication with the informant, who Zygier had tried to recruit as a double agent.

On Sunday German newspaper Der Spiegel reported that information passed on by Zygier led to the capture of two Mossad informants in Lebanon by the Hezbollah. Reuters reported that Zygier was planning to sneak into Syria.

  • Israel’s « Prisoner X » provided info to Hezbollah : report
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/israels-prisoner-x-provided-info-hezbollah-report

Israel’s “Prisoner X,” the former Mossad agent who was found hanging in his jail cell shortly after his arrest in 2010, had provided Hezbollah with the identities of Lebanese informants, helping crack at least two major spy rings in the country, Germany’s Der Spiegel revealed on Sunday.

Citing an internal Israeli record, the report said that Ben Zygier, an Australian national recruited by the Israeli spy agency in 2003, was suspected of having passed on the names of Ziad al-Homsi and Mustafa Ali Awada prior to his secret arrest and detention in Israel.

Lebanese authorities arrested the two suspects in 2009 on charges of espionage and sentenced them each to 15 years in prison.

Report: Zygier gave Hezbollah intel about two Lebanese agents working for Mossad

Der Spiegel expose on Prisoner X affair reveals that the Lebanese agents, Ziad al-Homsi and Mustafa Ali Awada, were subsequently arrested in May 2009 and sentenced to lengthy prison sentences for espionage.
Alleged Mossad agent Ben Zygier, known as Prisoner X before committing suicide while jailed in solitary confinement, handed Hezbollah sensitive information that led to the arrest of Lebanese agents in Israel’s service, according to previews of an expose to be released by Der Spiegel on Monday.

The German news weekly alleges that before his death in an isolated Israeli prison cell, Zygier managed to transfer to Hezbollah the names of two Lebanese agents also operating at the Mossad’s behest. The two Lebanese agents, Ziad al-Homsi and Mustafa Ali Awada, were subsequently arrested in May 2009 and sentenced to lengthy prison sentences for espionage.

The article, which cites an internal investigative report obtained by Der Spiegel, brands Zygier as “Israel’s biggest traitor” and describes how the “Zionist turned into a defector.”

    • Je trouve l’exposé de Silverstein tout aussi improbable, pour tout dire un scénario fabriqué pour cacher autre chose (je ne sais quoi) :
      – d’abord je ne pige pas pourquoi, parce qu’il aurait commis une énorme « bourde » (et pas une trahison volontaire), le gars serait devenu le nouveau Masque de fer dans une prison israélienne ; Mordechai Vanunu a eu un procès pour tout de même bien plus « grave » ;
      – ça permet de remettre la Hezbollah dans l’histoire, avec un « agent du Hezbollah dans les Balkans » ; hum, et pourquoi pas en Bulgarie tant qu’on y est, en train de prendre des photos des cars de touristes israéliens ?
      – le gars prend contact avec un agent du Hezbollah dans les Balkans depuis Tel Aviv, alors est assigné dans un bureau ? Quoi, il lui a téléphoné ? Skypé ?
      – les réseaux d’agents israéliens qui se sont fait prendre au Liban, ça n’est pas deux types, ça doit avoisiner les 200 ;
      – Silverstein suggère (c’est fait pour ?) que le gars se serait suicidé par sentiment de culpabilité, parce qu’il a trahit son pays (involontairement) et provoqué la mort de deux agents du Mossad. Je comprends que le gars n’a pas été suicidé a l’insu de son plein gré.

  • The (Very) Quiet Peace Talks Between Israel and Hamas | New Republic
    http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112593/very-quiet-peace-talks-between-israel-and-hamas#

In a larger sense, the situation in the region does not bode as poorly for Israel as might seem at first glance. Iran is suffering more than ever under sanctions—and its achilles heel may yet prove to be its client state, Syria. It’s clear than Bashar al Assad is in dire straits and there’s little sign that the Iranian forces battling on the ground in Syria alongside Hezbollah units will ever stem the tide. Meanwhile, Jordan has been experiencing a relatively low-key Arab Spring, and the Saudi monarchy has been adept at managing the popular discontent in its own country.

    (...)

Thus, contrary to appearances, this is a very promising moment to forge durable agreements between Israel and Palestine. That’s not to say that an “end of conflict” solution is in sight; neither side is capable of making the major concessions necessary for that. Instead, the outcome will likely be a medium-term plan to manage the thorny issues that divide the two sides—and that ought to suffice.
